1 studio lawrence kim frames ocean views in hotel O concept

‘hotel O’, a conceptual project by studio lawrence kim, is a boutique resort located within the breath taking coastal environment of okinawa prefecture, japan. the imagined venue translates the site’s natural surrounding into the primary architectural element in and outside the hotel. the massing strategy minimizes the building’s impact on surroundings, and increases connection between residents and the ocean, by situating the main form directly at the base of the cliff. a secondary structure, the event hall, is located atop the cliff, which serves as a bridge to the main hotel lobby and beach beyond. within ‘hotel O’, the location’s four natural elements — beach, water, sky, and cliff — are framed to create distinct, wonderful views for guests. designboom has received this project from our DIY submissions feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their own work for publication. see more project submissions from our readers here. 2016-03-11 04:05

Bernard Arnault, Karl Lagerfeld and 6 Two Jenners Attend Palazzo Fendi Unveiling

Bernard Arnault with his son Alexandre, Karl Lagerfeld , Kendall and Kris Jenner and models Lindsey Wixson and Ming Xi were all united around a table on the rooftop of Palazzo Fendi , which contains the terrace of the new Zuma restaurant. The restaurant opened its doors Thursday night just in time for the event.

“It was amazing,” said Kendall Jenner, referring to the restaurant’s food. Actually, the model had an intimate pre-dinner at Zuma with her mother, while the other guests were still checking out the two floors of the revamped Fendi flagship.

“This is just great and it really reflects the image of the Fendi brand,” said Lagerfeld, praising the project developed by the Roman fashion house. “I’m leaving tomorrow, but I wanted to stay at least one night in one of the suites.” Along with housing the store and the restaurant, Palazzo Fendi contains seven exclusive hotel suites.

Keeping her usual low profile, film director Sofia Coppola also attended the event. “I’m doing a project with the Opera House here in Rome,” she said. Coppola will direct a production of “La Traviata” from May. Valentino Garavani, as well as Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, will design the costumes.

Several generations of the Fendi family flocked to the new palazzo, including Silvia Venturini Fendi’s daughters Leonetta Luciano Fendi and Delfina Delettrez Fendi. “We are unveiling a special jewelry project in a couple of weeks, which will be very innovative, but also rooted in the tradition,” said Delettrez Fendi, who will also launch a couture jewelry collection in Paris in July.

In addition to an array of Rome-based actors — including Ornella Muti, Claudio Santamaria, Alessandra Mastronardi and Katie Saunders, who is said to have a new comedy out at the end of the month — the Italian fashion industry was represented by Carlo Capasa, chief executive officer of Camera Nazionale della Moda, and designer Marco de Vincenzo.

The former gave a lecture at Rome’s Università della Sapienza earlier in the day, while the latter arrived straight from the Fendi offices, where he designs accessories. “I’m already working on the new collection and this weekend will be dedicated to searching new fabrics,” said de Vincenzo.

“This is a job for healthy, spirited people because the rhythms are intense,” said Venturini Fendi. “But honestly I cannot complain; it’s exciting.” 2016-03-11 01:45 Alessandra Turra

Michelle Obama Wears Jason Wu, 7 Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau Sports Lucian Matis for State Dinner

Canadian-born designers won big in the Beltway Thursday with First Lady Michelle Obama wearing Jason Wu and her Canadian counterpart Sophie-Gregoire Trudeau wearing a Lucian Matis purple gown with beading for the White House state dinner in honor of Prime Minister .

Having worn Jason Wu gowns for several events with dignitaries including the festivities for her husband’s own inaugural, Obama chose a midnight blue floral jacquard gown with asymmetric draping from the New York-based designer. Earlier in the day she wore a Tanya Taylor custom dress, and Trudeau wore another 3-D-style printed dress from Matis.

Trudeau’s stylist Jessica Mulroney said she wanted to wear only Canadian designers in the U. S. and considers championing Canadian design to be a mission. As for Trudeau’s reaction to all the media hype about her clothes, Mulroney said, “At first, she was definitely surprised that there was that much attention about it. But now she’s spinning it to help Canadian design and retail.”

Amidst the political heavy-hitters at Thursday’s dinner, there was a smattering of guests who are in the business of entertaining – Blake Lively and her “Deadpool” husband Ryan Reynolds, Mike Myers of “Austin Powers,” “Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels and “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Sandra Oh. (Save for Lively, the rest are Canadian-born.)

In a phone interview Thursday, Matis discussed helping Trudeau with her Washington wardrobe. Trudeau made it clear that she only wanted to wear items in Washington from his spring collection that are also available online. “It was a very easy process. Usually, for an event like this you would expect someone like Sophie to request a custom piece. But she was really wonderful and said she wanted something from the collection. She selected six, we had a fitting in to make sure everything fit perfectly and then she took a whole bunch of them to the states,” Matis said Thursday.

In addition to the state dinner gown, Matis designed the pink and red knee-length dress with a 3-D-type print that Trudeau wore earlier in the day to the “Let Girls Learn” event with FLOTUS. “Sophie’s a really smart stylish woman, because from the moment that you show her the styles, she gives you exact reasons why it suits her or it doesn’t suit her,” he said.

Sizing up her style as “sophisticated, chic and playful,” Matis said Trudeau has “very radiant personalty,” which was evident when he and his team were reviewing images from Thursday morning’s appearance. “In every single photograph, she’s smiling or laughing very hard so that really shows her personality. She’s very vibrant and youthful. Every time you think of a politician, you think of someone who is 60-plus. It’s nice to see fresh faces, young faces representing the country,” Matis said.

“Canada is so multicultural and there is such a wealth of talent here, it’s evident that we’ll be working with designers from all different background. Certainly, we will support some really interesting, independent designers who we can hopefully help,” Mulroney said. “Rarely do I found that Canadian designers get to be in the spotlight and they’re so talented. This is really exciting.” Born in Romania and based in Canada, Matis launched his own label in 2007 and maintains a West 39th Street showroom in New York. He said Mulroney approached him about the Beltway trip six weeks ago. Trudeau wound up taking “a whole bunch” of his designs to the U. S., including four other options for the state dinner – three gowns and one knee-length option, he said.

Matis provided a black deep V-neck with beaded cuffs and pleating on the hip, a dusty blue gown with a poppy flower gown embellished with pearls and accented with pleating, a red bias-cut A-line dress with beading on the top and a cobalt blue short A-line dress with bell sleeves. In Canada, poppy flowers are a symbol of peace and are highlighted in a nationwide campaign not to forget the service of veterans, Matis pointed out.

Trudeau’s off-hours style is decidedly more low- key, Mulroney said. “She’s so casual. She loves a pair of boyfriend jeans and a T-shirt. She’s so down-to-earth and that hasn’t changed.”

Mulroney has more in common with Trudeau than their friendship and working relationship. Each woman has three children of her own and are married to the sons of former Canadian prime ministers. In addition, also worked with Sophie Trudeau in her single days when she was an entertainment reporter at CTV’s , where he is still a reporter. His wife said when out of the public eye, Trudeau is focused on her family. Mulroney said, “Sophie’s such an involved mother as well, so you can understand that she likes any kind of fashion that would work with that lifestyle.” 2016-03-11 01:07 Kristi Ellis

8 Meet Ruth Kearney, Netflix’s Latest Breakout Star

“I’d always been told ‘Arrested Development’ was this brilliant show, but truthfully I’d never watched it,” says 27-year- old Irish actress Ruth Kearney. Nevermind that — she caught up quickly after being cast in Will Arnett’s upcoming series for Netflix, “Flaked,” out Friday. The eight-episode series is the latest program from the streaming service, after the success of “ House of Cards ” and “ Orange is the New Black ,” and more recently, “ Master of None ,” “Making a Murderer” and “Love.” And with her new Netflix association, Kearney made sure she was familiar with Arnett’s past work. “When I got the job,” she says, on the phone from L. A., hours ahead of the show’s premiere party, “I completely binge-watched [Arrested Development].”

Kearney was born in London to an Irish family, who relocated back to Dublin when she was five. She grew up playing dress-up with her sisters, along the way discovering a natural liking for performance. “My sisters used to put on plays and make little films when we were away on holidays,” she says. “I always really enjoyed performing — I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but I felt that if I could do something like that it would be really amazing.” Luckily her family was sympathetic to the acting bug. “My mum was actually really into acting when she was younger, and my grandmother on my dad’s side had been into acting,” she says. “So it’s definitely in the family, but no one had gone at it in the professional sense.”

She moved to the U. K. to attend Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which has trained the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Naomie Harris, Jeremy Irons and Patrick Stewart. “It’s such competition, so you’re just really grateful to be there,” she says. “It was my first time living away from home, I guess, as I went to university in Dublin and still stayed at my family house.”

Soon after graduating, she landed a role on the ITV show “Primeval” for two seasons. “Since I went straight into TV, that’s kind of the path I continued on, even though my training was all theater,” she says. She’d been working in New York through March 2015 on FOX’s “The Following,” and returned to London, “but the interest was coming from the States,” she says. “Flaked” was one of her first auditions in L. A.

“Doing the eight episodes, it was almost like we were shooting an indie film, as opposed to what I was used to doing on a TV series,” she says of “Flaked.” “We had the whole arc, whereas often in TV the concept can change.”

The arc for her character, London, is not all the evident when the pilot wraps. “She kind of shows up, she’s the new girl in town, but everything you know about her is from what other people are saying,” Kearney says of London. “It’s people’s descriptions of her, and what you’ve heard — and I think that’s what I find interesting, is that air of mystery.”

London is a waitress at a local bar in Venice who catches the eye of both Arnett’s character Chip and his best friend Dennis. “Is she just this girl? Is she just this waitress and she’s going to be this love interest? Is she going to be the catalyst that breaks up this bromance?” Kearney says. “But as the series goes on, there’s actually more to her than you realize — she’s got her own s–t going on, her own things she’s dealing with, and slowly as the story progresses and she gets to know the guys better, things start to unravel and the truth comes out. She’s got quite a big part to play.”

Playing the part of London was itself quite the departure for Kearney. “The character I played before London was on the show “The Following,” and she was a serial killer,” she says. “So ‘Flaked’ was obviously far more relatable than, like, stabbing people.” 2016-03-11 00:54 Leigh Nordstrom
