Needham Insights: Thought Leader Series Laura A. Martin, CFA & CMT – [email protected] / (917) 373-3066 September 5, 2019 Dan Medina – [email protected] / (626) 893-2925 eSports High Impact and Investable For the past decade, eSports has been growing on the main stage in Asia and in stealth mode in the US. This report addresses questions we get most often from investors about eSports: ➢ What is eSports? Definitions differ. Our definition of eSports is “players competing at a video game in front of a live audience while being live-streamed.” By implication, viewing, attendance, and playing time are linked, and each creates revenue streams for eSports. ➢ How big is eSports? Globally, one out of every three (ie, 33%) 18-25 year olds spent more than an hour a day playing video games, 395mm people watched eSports, and 250mm people played Fortnite in 2018. eSports revenue will be $1.1B in 2019, up 26% y/y. ➢ Should investors care about eSports? We would argue “yes”, owing to: a) global scale; b) time spent playing and viewing; c) compelling demographics; d) eSports vs traditional sports trends; e) revenue growth; and, f) sports betting should supercharge US eSports. ➢ Is eSports a fad? We would argue “no”, owing to: a) many US Universities now offer Varsity eSports scholarships; b) new special purpose eSports stadiums are proliferating; c) billionaires are investing to make eSports successful; d) audience growth; and, e) Olympics potential. ➢ Why have you never heard of eSports? Because zero of the top 30 earning players in the world were from the US in 2018.

Regular Updates #7 August 26, 2020 BACKGROUND With fans returning to live events, KAGR’s “Future of Live Events & Sports: The Re-Emergence of Fans Post Covid-19” is driving insights and sharing of best practices across the 31 markets we are tracking. In our 7th update, our goal remains to predict fan interest in attending games and live events as they resume, to identify efforts organizations are undertaking to address fan safety, and to help the industry come back as quickly and safely as possible. Using our framework1 and analysis, we continue to track fan demand based on market factors, venue initiatives, and fan avidity. We have sifted through all the noisy data to bring you insights on how live events and sports will be different as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are adding new data sources to track this rapidly changing situation. August 26 2020: Update Overview July’s surging COVID-19 case numbers have started to retreat; however as the fall sports season comes into focus, the likelihood of fans in stands have waned. More than fifteen NFL teams will not have fans in venue to start the season, while some NCAA conferences have postponed play altogether (Big Ten and Pac-12 will not play sports this fall). MLS has had positive signs with fan returning; FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City both hosted one event with approximately half of the possible capacity (5,000). However, the Kentucky Derby (scheduled for September 5th) which had originally announced having fans in a limited capacity, has reversed that decision.

  • Deadly Drones? Why FAA Regulations Miss the Mark on Drone Safety
Deadly Drones? Why FAA Regulations Miss the Mark on Drone Safety Steve Calandrillo,* Jason Oh,† and Ari Webb‡ 23 STAN. TECH. L. REV. 182 (2020) ABSTRACT A rapidly growing commercial drone industry has prompted the introduction of nu- merous regulations governing American airspace. Congress has tasked the Federal Avia- tion Administration (FAA) with “developing plans for the use of the navigable airspace to ensure the safety of aircraft and the efficient use” of American skies. While well-intended, the FAA has departed from Congressional will by imposing an excessive regulatory re- gime that threatens to stifle drone technology and innovation. In fact, many FAA regula- tions fail to address the very problem they seek to fix, namely the safety of our airspace. The unfortunate result is that myriad scientific and pragmatic applications of cutting- edge drone technology have been stalled or thwarted entirely inside the United States, forcing innovation efforts to move abroad. FAA regulations must be dramatically scaled back and reformed to reflect the count- less benefits and comparatively minimal risks associated with drone technology. The cur- rent rules cover innocuous use cases, are too restrictive even when addressing cases where regulation makes sense, and fail to permit efficient technical approaches to reaching reg- ulatory objectives. The nonsensical rule requiring any person over the age of thirteen to * Jeffrey & Susan Brotman Professor of Law, University of Washington School of Law, [email protected].
