The Legacy of Servetus: Humanism and the Beginning of Change of the Social Paradigm. On the Occasion of 450th Anniversary of His Martyrdom Marian Hillar Center for Philosophy and Socinian Studies Published in A Journal from The Radical Reformation, A Testimony to Biblical Unitarianism, Volume 11, No. 2, 2003, pp. 34-41. Michael Servetus occupies a unique place in the annals of European history. He was a lonely scholar and a bold mind who left two great legacies.1 In the realm of intellectual inquiry he demanded a radical reevaluation of the entire ideological religious system of assertions and dogmas imposed on Western Europe since the fourth century. Servetus's theological inquiry initiated the study of scriptural tradition in an attempt to uncover the real religious doctrines contained in it. On the moral societal level Servetus demanded freedom of intellectual inquiry, thought, conscience, and expression that was denied to millions on doctrinal theological grounds. By his sacrifice Servetus set into motion a process of change in the entire social paradigm and recovery of the right to freedom of conscience. Establishment of an ecclesiastical paradigm. Servetus’s role as a central figure in history who initiated the process of recovering the social humanistic paradigm becomes obvious if we put it in a historical perspective. Greco-Roman pre-Christian society enjoyed toleration, freedom of religion, of conscience, and of thought. Ancient religions never demanded conversion. The ancient western world did not have the concept of "heresy" or "heretic." This was due to the lack of a state religion and state sanctioned theological doctrine, though the people and the centers of power were highly religious. -

Introduction Since the EKD (Evangelical Church in Germany) has proclaimed a Luther or reformation decade in 2008 in order to celebrate the beginning of the reformation 500 years ago, the interest in what and how women contributed to the spreading of the new reformatory ideas and live style has been increasing in Germany. The situation has been completely different when I was studying evangelical theology in Marburg and Heidelberg in the beginning of the 1980th. In that time German scholars, or rather female scholars, only started to research the bible and church history about women's contribution, although in other countries, like in the USA, Roland H. Bainton (1894-1984) had already published his book “Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy” in 1971. It is very significant that it took 24 years to translate this book into German. In 1995 it had become available as paperback issue with the title “Frauen der Reformation. Von Katharina von Bora bis Anna Zwingli”. It contains seven biographies and a summarized description of women of the Anabaptist movement. It quickly became very popular and in 1996 already the third edition was published. In our lectures and seminars we only heard about Martin Luther, his life as monk and his conversion, about Luther´s posting of theses in 1517 in Wittenberg, about his central reformatory scriptures in the 1520th and the bible translation. Vol. XVII (2012) 173-192 IL POTERE COME INTERCESSIONE: I TENTATIVI DI TRE DONNE NEL PROCESSO PER ERESIA A FANINO FANINI Giunia Totaro LASLAR, Université de Caen Basse-Normandie INTRODUZIONE Fra le prime manifestazioni dell’Inquisizione romana, la condanna di Fanino Fanini merita una menzione particolare, e ciò non solo per la piega che presero gli eventi, influenzati dal singolare carisma dell’eretico, ma in primo luogo per la cesura storica segnata dalla sua morte, per i personaggi coinvolti e per la natura delle trattative che precedettero l’esecuzione. La vicenda di Fanini, svoltasi tra il 1549 e il 1550, vede protagoniste le donne nel tentativo di guadagnare la grazia al condannato. L’impegno femminile in questo caso si configura come attività di mediazione e si oppone al potere maschile, rappresentato dal duca Ercole II d’Este, dai papi Paolo III e Giulio III, dall’inquisitore di Ferrara, Girolamo Papino, e dal cardinale Gian Pietro Carafa, membro influente del ramo oltranzista del collegio inquisitoriale. La particolarità del caso che qui si riassume deriva inoltre dal rango sociale, culturale e politico delle figure femminili coinvolte, poiché di Fanini s’interessarono una nobildonna, una principessa reale ed una delle più grandi figure di donne letterate del Cinquecento: Lavinia della Rovere (1521- 16011), Renata di Francia (1510-15752) ed Olimpia Morata (1526/7-15553). He was a lonely scholar and a bold mind who brought together what was best in the cultural renewal of the Renaissance and in the attempt at the moral renewal programmed by those who came to be called Radical Reformers. He discovered through the study of the bible, which was made possible by the Reformation trends that its truth contrasted with official Christian practice and official doctrinal formulations. He saw that Christianity was corrupt morally and 2 ideologically, and, inspired by the rising spirit of the reform, he envisioned a plan to restore Christianity to its original simplicity and integrity as suggested by Erasmus. The genius of Michael Servetus extends to many fields of human endeavor: jurisprudence, mathematics, geography, astrology, philosophy, medicine, theology, and biblical criticism. -

DIRCK COORNHERTl I Nowadays everyone knows of the sensational discoveries of the Dead Sea scrolls and their considerable importance, probably the greatest discovery of this half century in the field of philology. But in this same period other finds have been made which, although they are less spectacular, present a special interest, because· of the new light they throw on a problem or a person, or even on several prob lems and several persons. One day in 1938 Professor Bruno Becker (Amsterdam University), a distin guished specialist in the history of ideas of the 16th century and the conscientious ~ editor of the W ellevenskunste by Dirck Coornhert, the Dutch 'Montaigne', was. browsing in the small church library of the Remonstrant Community in Rotter dam. He was looking for the works of spiritualist and liberal thinkers of the time of the Reformation, which one might encounter in the archives of this Latitudinarian denomination. At a certain moment he picked up a double· manuscript (one text in Latin, the other in French), of which the Latin version was signed by the writer as Basilius Montfortius. It had been attributed by the authors of the printed catalogue to Celio Secondo Curione. When he started reading the Latin text, Becker at once recognized the handwriting of Sebastian Castellio and noticed that this unknown manuscript was the last word in a famous controversy between John Calvin and Theodore Beza on the one hand,. -

Caterina Mordeglia Silvestro Tegli and the first Latin translation of Machiavelli’s Il Principe Abstract : Although Agostino Nifo produced a Latin reworking of Il Principe before Machiavelli’s treatise saw print, the first proper Latin translation was not completed until 1560. Commissioned by the publisher Pietro Perna, it was carried out by the Reformed Umbrian exile Silvestro Tegli and published in Basle as a work of politico-religious Reformist propaganda. The translation was essentially faithful to the original, except for the omission of some passages whose content was too compromising and a stylistic reworking marked by the use of rhetorical amplificatio , as was typical of literary prose in the sixteenth century. With its 14 republications and re-printings in the space of 60 years, it helped spread Machiavelli’s text throughout Europe, and its fame was only surpassed by Hermann Conring’s Latin translation published in 1660, which however largely recast the original for ideological reasons. Before looking more closely at the first Latin version of Machiavelli’s Il Principe , I think it is best to start with some background. Machiavelli’s celebrated political treatise, which since its first appearance has enjoyed a level of diffusion and fame (for good or ill) that even surpasses Dante’s Divine Comedy , was given a Latin version even before it was printed. But that is precisely what it was: a version, and not a translation in the strict sense of the word. As we know 1, in March 1523 in Naples the philosopher Agostino Nifo, famous primarily for his commentaries on Aristotle 2, published an essay in Latin entitled De regnandi peritia , an example of the genre of specula principis which was very common during the Renaissance humanist period. -

Tensions in Renaissance Cities Lavish courts and towering cathedrals, entrancing polyphony and artistic masterpieces—our romantic fascination with the cultural glories of the Renaissance often eclipses one truth, recorded by astute observers of the age like Machiavelli, that the era of Michelangelo and Shakespeare was, in many ways, darker than the “Dark Ages” which it named. The crisis had one unexpected cause: progress. In the centuries after the Black Death, regenerating urban centers, strengthened by financial and commercial innovations, linked together to form an increasingly interconnected society. Soon English wool was no longer finished at home, but exported to be woven and dyed in Italy, before shipping out across trade networks which stretched from the Middle East deep into the New World. As Europe’s economic bloodstream strengthened, the same increase in trade and travel which let architects build with exotic stones and scholars recover lost Greek manuscripts also transmitted diseases with unprecedented speed and ferocity, while larger, denser cities were richer breeding grounds for violence and contagions. As wealth and power flowed in, richer states could muster larger armies, innovative weaponry could shed blood on unprecedented scales, and ambitious rising families could hire mercenary forces larger than frail governments could withstand. This exhibit lays out a geography of tensions which characterized Renaissance cities. In a world still plagued by war and banditry, urban growth often meant density rather than sprawl, as swelling populations jockeyed for space within the circumferences of city walls. Crowded and wealthy cities became powder kegs, where old tensions— between men and women, citizens and visitors, Jews and Christians, religious and secular authorities—channeled the energies of new and increasing factional and economic rivalries. -

Petrus Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) Europäische Wirkungsfelder eines italienischen Reformators1 von EMIDIO CAMPI In den zur Zeit ruhigen Gewässern der Reformationsforschung scheint der 500. Geburtstag von Petrus Martyr Vermigli kleine, aber feine Wellen zu schla gen. Zumindest gibt es Anzeichen dafür, daß neuerdings wieder ein wissen schaftlicher Diskurs über diese wenig bekannte Schlüsselfigur des reformier ten Protestantismus und der europäischen Geistesgeschichte des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts in Gang gekommen ist. So haben planende Voraussicht und glücklicher Zufall Hand in Hand dafür gesorgt, daß die Jahresversammlung des ehrwürdigen Zwinglivereins im Juni 1999 ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf den italienischen Glaubensflüchtling richtete. Anfang Juli fand unter großer inter nationaler Beteiligung ein Symposium in Kappel am Albis2 statt, das die Wir kung und Bedeutung seiner Tätigkeit in Zürich würdigte. Im September wurde während der Jahreskonferenz des Sixteenth Century Journal in St. Louis, Mis souri, ein fachübergreifendes Vermigli-Kolloquium durchgeführt.3 Im Okto ber folgte schließlich eine Zusammenkunft an der Universität Padua4, der alma mater Vermiglis, bei der die Ergebnisse dieser konzentrisch angelegten Tagun gen gezielt weitergeführt wurden. Erfreulich ist zudem der Umstand, daß das Jahr 1999 nicht nur Vermigli-Kongresse brachte, sondern auch eine beträcht liche Anzahl neuer Editionen5, Studien6 und Dissertationsprojekte7 verzeich nen konnte. 1 Vortrag, gehalten an der ordentlichen Mitgliederversammlung des Zwinglivereins vom 16.
