213 Nothing Like the South: Aurora Greenway – a Belle
NOTHING LIKE THE SOUTH: AURORA GREENWAY – A BELLE IN EXILE Anca Peiu University of Bucharest Larry McMurtry’s Terms of Endearment has been better known as a 1983 successful silver-screen story than as a 1975 best-selling novel, rather as a multiplereceiver of Academy Awards than as a most accomplished book by a prolific author and Pulitzer Prize winner. My return to it is justified by some recently read essays – neither on the film, nor on the book – but on the Belle and the South (indeed, an archetypal coupling somehow echoing Beauty and the Beast ). As for my title here – it oscillates between two Shakesperean sonnets: Sonnet 130 and Sonnet 3. Both poems appeal particularly to the sense of sight ; they are versions of that type of painting (also fiction) known as a portrait of a lady – who stays the lady even if she defies any canon of lady-likelihood – both as Shakespeare’s (image of the) lover and as McMurtry’s Southern Belle – from My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun… Thou art thy mother’s glass, and she in thee Calls back the lovely April of her prime; So thou through windows of thine age shalt see, Despight of wrinkles, this thy golden time… The latter quote opens Larry McMurtry’s novel, as a necessary motto. It evokes a specific traditional relationship: mother-daughter, by the classic symbol of the mirror . It could send us – via Larry McMurtry’s novel – to Katherine Henninger’s astute study of the impact of photography on the Visual Legacies of the South: Picture a southern woman . -
Upton Sinclair Against Capitalism
Scientific Journal in Humanities, 1(1):41-46,2012 ISSN:2298-0245 Walking Through The Jungle: Upton Sinclair Against Capitalism George SHADURI* Abstract At the beginning of the 20th century, the American novel started exploring social themes and raising social problems. Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle, which appeared in 1906, was a true sensation for American reading community. On the one hand, it described the outra- geous practices of meatpacking industry prevalent at those times on the example of slaughterhouses in Chicago suburbs; on the other hand, it exposed the hapless life of American worker: the book showed what kind of suffering the worker experienced from his thankless work and poor living conditions. Sinclair hoped that the novel, which was avidly read both in America and abroad, would help improve the plight of American worker. However, to his disappointment, the government and society focused their attention exclusively on unhealthy meatpacking practices, which brought about necessary, but still superficial reforms, ignoring the main topic: the life of the common worker. Sinclair was labeled “a muckraker”, whereas he in reality aspired for the higher ideal of changing the existing social order, the thought expressed both in his novels and articles. The writer did not take into account that his ideas of non-violent, but drastic change of social order were alien for American society, for which capitalism was the most natural and acceptable form of functioning. The present article refers to the opinions of both American and non-American scholars to explain the reasons for the failure of Sinclair’s expectations, and, based on their views, concludes why such a failure took place. -

This period is often painted as one of advancement of the human condition. Sinclair refutes this by unveiling the horrible injustices of Chicago’s meat packing industry as Jurgis Rudkus, his protagonist, discovers the truth about opportunity and prosperity in America. This book is a good choice for eleventh and twelfth grade, junior college, or college students mature enough to understand the purpose of its content. The “hooks” for most students are the human-interest storyline and the graphic descriptions of the meat industry and the realities of immigrant life in America. The teacher’s main role while reading this book with students is to help them understand Sinclair’s purpose. Coordinating the reading of The Jungle with a United States history study of the beginning of the 1900s will illustrate that this novel was not intended as mere entertainment but written in the cause of social reform. As students read, they should be encouraged to develop and express their own ideas about the many political, ethical, and personal issues addressed by Sinclair. This guide includes an overview, which identifies the main characters and summarizes each chapter. -

AN IRONIC DREAM OF A COMMON LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT This chapter is an effort to build an ironic political myth faithful to feminism, socialism, and materialism. Perhaps more faithful as blasphemy is faithful, than as reverent worship and identification. Blasphemy has always seemed to require taking things very seriously. I know no better stance to adopt from within the secular-religious, evangelical traditions of United States politics, including the politics of socialist feminism. Blasphemy protects one from the moral majority within, while still insisting on the need for community. Blasphemy is not apostasy. Irony is about contradictions that do not resolve into larger wholes, even dialectically, about the tension of holding incompatible things together because both or all are necessary and true. Irony is about humour and serious play. It is also a rhetorical strategy and a political method, one I would like to see more honoured within socialist-feminism. At the centre of my ironic faith, my blasphemy, is the image of the cyborg. A cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction. Social reality is lived social relations, our most important political construction, a world-changing fiction. The international women's movements have constructed 'women's experience', as well as uncovered or discovered this crucial collective object. This experience is a fiction and fact of the most crucial, political kind. -

Untitled Document Mr. Claro -- Modern Nonfiction Reading Selection by Joan Didion Holy Water JOAN DIDION is a fifth-generation Californian, born in Sacramento (1934), who took her B.A. at Berkeley and lives in Los Angeles. Between college and marriage to the writer John Gregory Dunne, she lived in New York for seven years, where she worked as an editor for Vogue and wrote essays for the National Review and the Saturday Evening Post. In California, Didion and Dunne separately write novels and magazine articles and collaborate on screenplays. Didion's novels are Run River (1963), Play It as It Lays (1970), A Book of Common Prayer (1977), and Democracy (1984). Her collections of essays are Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968), The White Album (1979), from which we have taken this selection, and After Henry (1992). She published Salvador in 1983, in 1987 Miami. Joan Didion is one of our best nonfiction writers. She describes the alien, simple California she grew up in and the southern California where she now lives - a landscape of drive-ins and orange groves, ocean and freeway, the Manson murders and ordinary, domestic, adulterous homicide. She has done witness to the turmoils of the decades, especially the sixties - drugs, Vietnam, and personal breakdown. Expertly sensitive and inventive with language, she is most talented in the representation of hysteria. While her book about El Salvador mentions politics, it is essentially the record of a sensibility, sensitive to fear, exposed to an atmosphere that engenders it: "Terror is the given of the place." Much of Didion's journalism derives from interviews. -

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel. -

The 2013 award marks the first time a screenwriting team has earned the honor. The USC Libraries will present the award to McMurtry and Ossana at the 25th-anniversary Scripter Award ceremony on Saturday, February 9, 2013. The Literary Achievement Award is an additional honor—distinct from the annual Scripter Award—that recognizes writers who have made significant, sustained contributions to the art of adaptation throughout their careers. USC Libraries Dean Catherine Quinlan and the Friends of the USC Libraries established the Scripter Literary Achievement Award in 2008. “We feel honored to receive the prestigious USC Libraries Scripter Literary Achievement Award, while well aware that we do so owing a debt to the many novelists and writers whose works we have adapted,” said Ossana and McMurtry of their selection. In addition to their 2006 Academy Award win for Best Adapted Screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, the pair has written two novels, nearly twenty original feature film scripts, and four award-winning miniseries. They began their writing partnership in the early 1990s with MORE 2: McMurtry and Ossana Win 2013 USC Libraries Literary Achievement Award the novel Pretty Boy Floyd, about the notorious American bank robber. -
Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SCREENING SERIES FOR ‘WALKERS: HOLLYWOOD AFTERLIVES IN ART AND ARTIFACT’ TO FEATURE CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD FILMS Exhibition artists Pierre Bismuth, Tom Sachs, and Guy Maddin to appear in person with select screenings and artist talks November 8–December 27, 2015 at Museum of the Moving Image Astoria, New York, October 22, 2015—Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce “The Hollywood Classics behind Walkers,” a screening series presented in conjunction with the exhibition Walkers: Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact, the Museum’s first major contemporary art survey. Through the work of 45 artists in painting, photography, sculpture, print, and video, Walkers examines the lasting impact of 20th-century film on culture, and the ability of its imagery to be recycled and reinvented by artists. Exhibition curator Robert M. Rubin has paired these artworks with a selection of rare movie ephemera including scripts, set photos, and costume design sketches, that when viewed through a 21st-century lens, serve as works of art in their own right. As an extension of the exhibition, “The Hollywood Classics behind Walkers” series provides audiences the opportunity to see legendary Hollywood films on the big screen alongside the artworks they have inspired, as well as independent films that bridge the gap between Hollywood film and our greater understanding of “Hollywood.” Museum of the Moving Image Chief Curator David Schwartz and Rubin have selected a program of films significant to the exhibition, with selected screenings featuring conversations with artists Tom Sachs (with The Godfather) and Pierre Bismuth (with Be Kind Rewind); and filmmaker and artist Guy Maddin in person with The Forbidden Room. -
