Bill Peterson is in his fourth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics, having set a clear course for making Shorter one of the top athletic programs in the country.

Peterson has made the desire for overall excellence the cornerstone of Hawks’ Athletics.

His decisions and expertise have produced a wave of firsts in a number of programs while also allowing Shorter University to achieve several banner finishes in the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics (NACDA) Director’s Cup, including a program-best 11th-place finish following the 2009-10 academic year.

Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year for 2009-10.

Numerous sports have reached unprecedented levels of success under the direction of Peterson’s leadership.

Since 2007-08, Shorter has captured 17 conference championships and won seven national titles, two team and five individual.

Volleyball won its first Southern States Athletic Conference title in 2007. Men’s cross country captured back-to-back SSAC championships in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams qualified for the NAIA Championships in Vancouver, Wash., the first time both teams made the trip to nationals in the same year.

Softball has made four straight appearances in the NAIA National Championship, winning three straight SSAC crowns from 2007-2009 before turning in a program-best fifth-place finish at the 2010 National Championship.

Football captured its first-ever Mid-South Conference title in 2008, subsequently making its first trip to the NAIA Football Championship Series.

Men’s and women’s track and field have combined to win five Mid-South championships in the last three years while each team has also posted consecutive top 10 finishes in the country. Women’s completed a third straight 20-win season in 2009-10 - the first time that has happened in program history - and advanced to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship for the first time since 2001.

Shorter has burst onto the national scene over the last four years, capturing a number of individual and team national championships.

Montagious Brown won the school’s first-ever individual national championship in 2008 by taking first in the high jump at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Justyna Mudy followed with the school’s first-ever female national crown in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track Championships.

Shorter Cheerleading enters the 2010-11 academic year as back-to-back national champions having brought the school its first-ever team national championships by winning the All-Girl II Intermediate title at the NCA Cheer Nationals in 2009 and 2010.

Peterson continues to push Shorter into the national spotlight. In January 2008, the NAIA announced that Peterson, Shorter University and Rome-Floyd County had been awarded the bid for the 2008 and 2009 NAIA Football National Championship to be held at the Hawks’ home football facility, .

Because of the rampant success of the 2008 and 2009 championship games, Barron Stadium will once again serve as the host site for the 2010 NAIA Football National Championship.

Not only does Peterson expect excellence on the field and court, but he does so in the classroom as well. In 2009-10, Shorter placed 111 athletes on their respective Academic All-Conference teams while also boasting 23 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, a list that included the 2009-10 Southern States Athletic Conference Female Honor Student-Athlete in Whitni Tucker, the second straight year that a Shorter athlete has garnered that award after Becca Thomas won the honor in 2008-09.

Prior to taking the helm of the Hawks’ athletic program, Peterson served three years in the position of recruiting coordinator for the Shorter University football team.

He came to Shorter from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he served as head baseball coach. In 2005, Peterson led Mount Paran to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the state finals while being named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Coach of the Year.

Prior to coaching, Peterson was President and Co-Founder of Horizon Medical Products (HMP), a publicly traded corporation headquartered in Atlanta.

Peterson played collegiate football at Texas Lutheran College where he was a member of the 1974 NAIA national championship team coached by the legendary Jim Wacker.

He finished college at Florida State University where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in Accounting.

Peterson’s father, Bill Sr., is credited with bringing the professional passing game to . Bill Sr. coached at Florida State from 1960-70, at Rice University in 1971 and for the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1972-73.

Rejuvenated Hawks set to roll out exciting group in 2011

FOR BASEBALL PLAYERS, coaches and fans, a new season always brings about a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm.

For the Shorter University Baseball Hawks, the 2011 outlook has those associated with the program overflowing with extreme levels of both.

Fresh off a 2010 campaign that saw the Hawks return to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in three years, topple six teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and demonstrate its fight by dropping a whopping 11 games by just one run, Shorter can hardly wait to deliver the first pitch.

“Our goal last season was to improve on what we did the previous year and we did just that,” head coach Matt Larry said about the huge steps the team made last year in putting the program into a position to make even greater strides this season. “The team had a better attitude in going after that goal.”

The Hawks won 24 games last season – a number that surely could have been higher if not for the heartbreaking one-run defeats – boasted a seven-game winning streak that stretched from late March to early April and went 1-2 in the SSAC Tournament, including a dramatic 5-3 victory over Southern Wesleyan.

Shorter was a tough out for any opponent, hitting .316 as a team while featuring a young, but promising pitching staff that worked hard to keep the Hawks within striking distance in a conference loaded with Top 25 caliber teams known for their offensive firepower. MATT LARRY

Head Coach • 8th Season • 165-209 Career Record

Alma Mater: Shorter University, 1993

Matt Larry enters his eighth season as the head baseball coach at Shorter University after a nine-year tenure as the assistant coach for the Hawks’ baseball program. In seven seasons at the helm, Larry has guided the Hawks to 165 victories.

A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Larry attended Clarkston High School where he was selected to the Dugout Club’s East All-Star team in 1988.

He played two years at Dekalb Junior College as a catcher and finished up his collegiate baseball career at Shorter in 1992.

At Shorter, he was a member of the 1991 Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team under head coach Mike Sansing and in 1992, helped the Hawks to 36 victories and a District 25 runner-up finish while playing for head coach Ricci Lattanzi.

Larry earned All-Conference and All-District honors as a senior catcher following the 1992 campaign.

As an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Shorter following his playing career, Larry was the architect behind Shorter’s 1998 and 2003 Georgia- Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC) championship teams and in 2004, Larry successfully launched Shorter’s first-ever junior varsity program.

Larry took over as head coach of the Shorter baseball program in 2004, and in 2006, Larry was awarded the Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Hawks to a 34-23 overall record.

Each year, Larry gives countless young men the opportunity to excel both as athletes on the baseball diamond and in the classroom as students dedicated to earning a college degree.

20 2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com Since 2004, Larry has directed the baseball program to a near 100 percent graduation rate and an overall team grade point average of 3.25 or better.

In 2009, Larry’s Hawks boasted seven Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) All-Academic Team honorees, two NAIA Scholar-Athletes and one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District recipient in current Hawks’ senior, Jake Broome.

Last season, Shorter placed 11 players on the SSAC All-Academic Team -- the most of any SSAC institution -- and saw All- Academic honoree Matt Johnson also lead the conference in batting average.

Larry’s tireless efforts on the recruiting front continue to keep Shorter competitive both on and off the field in the SSAC.

Larry earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Shorter in 1993 and began his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant with the Hawks. He earned his Master’s in Education from Jacksonville State University in 1998.

Larry is married to the former Brig Bagley of Rome, Ga., and they have two children: a daughter, Alivia (11) and a son, Bagley (6).

48 2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com BATTING CAGE CAMPAIGN

In the Fall of 2010, the Shorter Hawks Alumni Baseball Association and Association President Todd Wofford, launched the Baseball Batting Cage Campaign in order to help raise money for a batting cage facility adequate for a team roster of 60+ players.

Because the existing batting cage has limited room available to house only a few players at a time, the Baseball Alumni Association teamed up to help plan a future batting facility to assist the baseball program by developing a more efficient batting cage and to give them a more suitable place to practice during periods of inclement weather.

At the present time, the baseball program uses resources outside the University to practice during times of bad weather. The new proposed facility will give the Hawks a place to hit, throw, and work on various defensive drills without having to venture off campus.

Several opportunities to give are available through Baseball Golf Tournaments and other alumni functions, such as the Fall Alumni Game and various other game day events.

Those who are interested in donating to the Batting Cage Campaign or those who would like more information about how to contribute, please contact Shorter University head baseball coach Matt Larry at [email protected] or Shorter Hawks Alumni Baseball Association President Todd Wofford at [email protected].

2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 49 2011 SUMMER CAMPS

Daily Camp Highlights This summer, Shorter University Baseball will host three special day camps for youngsters between the ages of 5 and 13. Fundamentals that will be stressed include pitching, throwing, catching, hitting, fielding, base-running, and team concepts, as well as in-game strategies. Each group will be instructed in stations by qualified coaches and college players. Once all stations are completed, the campers will come together for team concepts and will be separated by age to play in a controlled scrimmage game.

The camps will be kept small so that INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION is stressed. The camps are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 12 noon each day, rain or shine. Indoor facilities are available at the Winthrop-King Centre, located on campus, for inside instruction should the weather be inclement.

Facilities The Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex, located on the Shorter University campus, will serve as the camp site. The baseball field will be used during the camp and each camper will receive a DVD showing the camper hitting and pitching.

Enrollment In order to maintain the highest quality of instruction, each camp is limited in size. One of Coach Larry’s goals is working personally with each camper. Large camps of hundreds of campers cannot accomplish the kind of personalized instruction that is an essential part of the Shorter University Baseball Camp philosophy. EARLY ENROLLMENT IS ENCOURAGED. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

What to Bring and Wear Recommended: Glove (name on it), baseball shoes with rubber cleats ( shoes are okay), cap, drinks in plastic containers only, protective cup, baseball pants (shorts may be worn), and a bat (name on it). Water and restrooms are available on site.

Awards Trivia and Fastest Runner awards will be given to campers. All campers will receive a t-shirt and personal video.

Special discounts are available for teams. Other discounts are available for more than one family member and for attending more than one session.

Baseball’s Alumni Game a growing Shorter University tradition

ROME -- Over the past decade-plus, the Shorter University Baseball Alumni Game has never wavered in popularity among the Shorter University and Rome communities.

Shorter University Baseball has become a tradition in Northwest Georgia, with a rich history of players and coaches that makes being associated with Hawks Baseball a special feeling.

For 17 years, former Hawks young and old have returned to The Hill in the fall for an enjoyable afternoon of America’s Game, taking advantage of an opportunity to allow those who starred on the diamond years ago to rub shoulders with those who proudly wear the Royal Blue today.

This page features pictures from this past season’s Alumni Game, which was held at Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex in October.

2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 51 2010 MEET THE TEAM DINNER

For one night in January, Shorter University Baseball fans had an opportunity to wish the Hawks well as they embarked on the 2010 season.

The 3rd Annual Shorter Baseball Meet the Team Dinner, a player-run event, was a rousing success for the third consecutive year, as families, alumni and friends of the Shorter baseball program gathered at the Winthrop-King Centre to partake in an evening of food and fellowship to celebrate one of the institutions most storied athletic programs.

Will Startup, brother of former Shorter baseball standout Drew Startup and pitcher for the San Diego Padres’ AAA affiliate, served as the evening’s keynote speaker and delivered an emotional address. Startup, who starred for the University of Georgia before being drafted into the professional ranks, discussed his journey towards his ultimate goal.

As has become tradition, the night began with a silent auction followed by a wonderful dinner provided by Aramark. Head coach Matt Larry introduced his underclassmen before handing the stage over to his senior class. Senior Joey Taylor addressed the audience and talked about the commitment and dedication of his teammates in the hopes of bringing Shorter Baseball back to the top of the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Coach Larry also revealed the winner of the Shorter Baseball raffle as part of the program’s fundraising campaign. Dot Sutton was awarded a $5,000 check for having her name drawn among the 200 tickets in play.

2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 53 COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Shorter University baseball program prides itself on having its players become what the coaching staff refers to as a “complete person.” A complete person is one who is trustworthy, respectful, responsible, honest and truthful, not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and in the community. The Shorter coaching staff has made it a goal to guide its student-athletes to demonstrate these traits that are exhibited in the five core character values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character program and feel it is evident in the team’s relentless efforts to give back to the community and its school through servant leadership.

Shorter’s baseball team has a reputation for being accountable in the classroom (11 of 24 players were selected to the SSAC All-Academic Team in 2010), on campus (the Hawks put in countless hours of assisting other athletic programs during game day functions as well as other departments on campus) and in the public eye (through community relations events and benefits). In 2010, the baseball team logged more service hours and made more community appearances than any other team in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Once again this year, the Shorter baseball team will contribute an enormous amount of volunteer hours to various community organizations through local school involvements, free clinics, game day benefits and by partnering with other organizations to raise awareness in the community.

Local School Involvement Every year, the team takes time to read books to elementary students in the community where the children get the opportunity to meet the baseball players and Harold the Hawk. On one such occasion, players, coaches, and Harold the Hawk made a visit to Midway Primary School for their annual BEE Celebration, Midway’s positive incentive program designed to recognize students for appropriate school behavior. As part of the program, student expectations are defined, consistent, and posted throughout the school; appropriate student behavior is taught; positive behaviors are publicly recognized and rewarded; and problem behaviors have clear consequences that are implemented consistently by staff and administration. MPS designed the Five Bees to define what is expected of all students. The expectations include Bee Respectful, Bee Safe, Bee Positive, Bee Ready, and Bee Neat. Players and coaches assisted in this fun day on the playground while Harold the Hawk mingled with the children. This is a fun and exciting event for everyone, especially for the children who get the chance to meet potential role models while giving the team a chance to give back to the community.

Reach Out and Read Program Reach Out and Read’s® objective is to prepare America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups by advising parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential. Harbin Pediactrics and Dr. Melissa Davis, along with the Hawks’ baseball and volleyball teams, joined together this year to promote this nationally known program. Players from both programs volunteered their time to sit with children, beginning at 6 months of age, in the Harbin Clinic Pediatric waiting room to promote the importance of reading to parents and children. This not for profit organization has been a true blessing for many children of Rome and the Hawks hope to continue their partnership with Dr. Davis and Harbin Pediatrics in years to come.

Liver Strong In March 2008, good friend and Shorter graduate Mark Whitaker was diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease and is currently fourth on a liver donor list. Mark was the voice of the Shorter Hawk Baseball team from 1990-94 and is a long time supporter of Shorter University and its athletics program. Since his diagnosis, the Shorter Baseball program has been supporting him, his wife Dana, and his two children, Taylor (14) and Bryce (11), by purchasing “Liver Strong” bracelets that benefit a matched fund for Mark; used specifically for post-transplant expenses. This fall, the Baseball Hawks were able to show Mark and his family more support by donating all contributions and concession stand sales directly to his cause during the 18th Annual Alumni Baseball Game. The team sold Liver Strong wristbands and shirts during the game and both items will be sold during all home spring games.

Ledbetter Baseball Complex. The event provided an opportunity for the Rome and surrounding communities to show their support for all of the men and women who so graciously sacrifice their own lives for our freedom. More specifically, the Shorter Baseball Military Appreciation Day honored the 108th Cavalry Squadron, which returned home from its latest tour of duty in Afghanistan on March 9, 2010 and other soldiers native to Northwest Georgia, all while providing fans with an incredible array of interactive events. The Robert H. Ledbetter Complex was decorated with a multitude of flags, the University placed a 1954 Army Jeep on display and donation buckets were located throughout the complex for those who wished to give to the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation - a charitable organization established in 1994 to provide emergency relief assistance during times of financial crisis to the members and families of the Georgia National Guard. Shorter Baseball and Mal’s Pals, Inc. On March 20, 2010, the Shorter Baseball Hawks hosted a fundraiser to help support former Shorter baseball player, 1994 alumnus and Shorter University Director of Admissions Patrick McElhaney and his family, in an effort to raise money for his two daughters who have been diagnosed with a rare and incurable mitochondrial disease called Leigh’s Disease. Every 30 minutes, a child is born who will develop a mitochondrial disease by age 10, and as of now, there are no known cures for mitochondrial disease. Due to the devastating effects of mitochondrial disease on key body parts such as the brain, muscles, heart, and lungs, many children will not survive their teenage years. The McElhaney’s are inspired by your love and friendship, by your concern and support, and by your participation in helping them raise money to continue funding very necessary research that takes them one step closer to a cure for Mitochondrial Disease. This year, the Hawks will take on Truett-McConnell College on March 26, 2011 in the 2nd Annual Mito Awareness and Mal’s Pals Day. The Hawks will wear green hats for Mal’s Pals, Inc., and will purchase green sweatbands for Truett-McConnell and the umpires to show their support. Please show your support on this memorable day by attending the game and purchasing Mal’s Pals merchandise on sale in the concession stand to help raise money for the McElhaney family and mitochondrial disease research.

4th Annual Hawks’ Baseball Mr. Shorter Pageant As tradition holds true for the baseball program, the 3rd Annual Mr. Shorter Pageant, a not for profit event, was held on April 7, 2010, in the Shorter University dining hall to raise money for Mal’s Pals, Inc. The participants included several members from the Hawk baseball team and other male students who were willing to participate. The contest required the participants to be judged in three different events; talent, beauty and interview. This successful event held in conjunction with Celebrate Shorter, drew over 100 spectators and had several distinguished members of the Shorter faculty and staff as judges. Last year’s Mr. Shorter Pageant crowned Joey Taylor of the baseball team and all proceeds went directly to Patrick McElhaney and his family for Mal’s Pals, Inc., to help raise awareness for Mitochondria Disease. This year’s event will be held on April 6, 2011 in the Shorter University dining hall.

YMCA, Baseball Hawks to once again host youth T-ball clinics

ROME -- Collegiate athletes have the unique opportunity to use their status to not only reach out to the communities in which they compete, but also have a positive impact on the lives of those who reside in those communities.

The Shorter University baseball team is making this concept a reality.

In the Spring of 2009, the Shorter University baseball team and the YMCA of Rome teamed up for the first-ever 3 and 4-year-old T-ball For Tyke’s league.

For two days out of each week, the Hawk baseball players took time out of their busy spring schedules to work on the fundamentals of baseball with 3 and 4-year-old boys and girls in the community.

The players held four different sessions with approximately 56 youth focusing on throwing, hitting, base-running and fielding at the obertR H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

“We focus on throwing, fielding and hitting - all of the fundamentals of the game,” said Shorter head baseball coach Matt Larry.

“It’s great having our guys come out and volunteer and we want to make sure that our players not only teach the game, but also learn to appreciate the innocence of the game.”

The first session began at 5:30 p.m. and wrapped up around 6:15 p.m., with the second group coming in at 6:30 p.m. and finishing at 7:15 p.m.

Youngsters first got a chance to work on their throwing mechanics with detailed instruction from the Shorter players before moving to hitting stations off the tee and fielding drills, where they learned the basics of catching ground balls.

This year, Shorter and the Rome YMCA will team up for a third straight season to once again provide these t-ball clinics in the spring.

About 15 players from Shorter’s roster volunteer to help with the clinics, giving them a chance to share some of the skills that they learn on the diamond themselves.

“This is a very rewarding experience to share our knowledge of the game with kids who love to learn and are eager to play a game they love,” said Hawks’ assistant coach Lee Bryant. “It’s a thrill seeing these kids enjoy themselves and also seeing their parents have a good time watching them play.

“It’s just a great opportunity all around.”

56 2011 SHORTER HAWKS Baseball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com Shorter Baseball participates in Drug Free Awareness Day

ROME -- This fall, the Shorter University Hawks once again participated in the Garden Lakes Elementary National Red Ribbon Week.

This special event was held in honor of Enrique Camarena, a DEA agent who lost his life in his fight against drugs. For his heroic actions, one entire week in the fall was dedicated to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

On the final day of Red Ribbon Week Shorter players participated in the Red Ribbon Week Parade at Garden Lakes Elementary. The parade consisted of a one mile walk around the lake adjacent to the school and each player was assigned a grade level with which they walked during the parade.

Following the parade, the players visited classrooms where the kids had the opportunity to ask them questions.

“It was a rewarding experience to have the chance to spend time with younger kids and help spread the word about the negative effects of drug use,” said Hawks’ senior first baseman Will Davis, one of the players who visited Garden Lakes Elementary.

“Hopefully we made a difference in their lives by teaching them that drugs are not the way to go and by showing them that staying in school and making good grades, using teamwork, and the importance of respecting others is the right way.”

Young Hawks showed fight during promising 2010 campaign

BOTTOM LINE NUMBERS often measure success. For sports teams, that means that success is usually based on wins and losses.

There are, however, scenarios where being successful has nothing to do with how many wins one racks up.

Instead, success comes down to whether certain goals have been met and if the team has gone above and beyond what was expected.

Case in point, the 2010 Shorter University baseball team.

“We wanted to get back to the postseason and improve from last year,” said Shorter head coach Matt Larry, whose Hawks concluded the 2010 season after compiling a 24-32 record and earning a trip to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007. “I think those goals were met.

“They never gave up,” Larry added. “They did their job day in and day out.”

Playing in one of the NAIA’s most powerful conferences - the SSAC had four schools ranked in the final regular season NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll - the Hawks all but held their own throughout the season.

Shorter posted wins over six nationally ranked foes and dropped an incredible 11 games by just one run.
