By leveraging our enhanced understanding of China’s market and its corresponding market-drivers, Bomoda has uniquely positioned itself to meaningfully engage in conversations with global brands who are looking to establish an ROI on their marketing, communications and strategic spend in Mainland China. Bomoda makes sense of the varying statistics generated by China’s many digital platforms, the drivers of such statistics, the business implications generated by such data, and the recommendations necessary for a brand to improve performance. Our sole goal is to ensure that our clients build meaningful brand equity, communicate effectively with their optimal consumer base, and unlock their true value potential. This is what drives us every day. THIS REPORT This report is a sample exploration into the Celebrity/Key Opinion Leader (“KOL”) market in China as it presently stands. The purpose of the exercise is to provide a high-level overview of how to discern the value of different celebrities/KOLs; and, moreover, which of these celebrities/KOLs might be best for a particular brand. Underlying this report is a vast archive comprised of numerous data-points generated from China’s leading digital platforms which is updated daily to ensure accuracy and timeliness. Should you find the following interesting, we would be happy to discuss how the full weight of our tools can be brought to bear to add value to your brand’s efforts. 3 WHAT DIFFERENTIATES OUR REPORT? This report offers quantitative analysis, in-depth qualitative analysis and curated takes based on a comprehensive set of social data . TYPICAL MARKET REPORT THIS BOMODA REPORT We developed in-depth qualitative analysis and curated analysis for specific business needs: • Quantitative • Qualitative Analysis • Curated Analysis • Quantitative Analysis Analysis • Awareness Analysis • KOL-related Image • KOL with High Potential • Engagement • Awareness • KOL-related Topic • KOL with Low • Engagement Brand/Product Impact • Sample Use Case We collected a comprehensive set of social data points: • Weibo Mentions • Weibo Mentions • Weibo Mention/Engagement • Weibo Mention/Engagement • Weibo Impressions Data Points • Weibo Reposts Sentiment Content Quality • Weibo Reposts • Weibo Impressions • Weibo Mention/Engagement • Weibo/WeChat Content Type • Weibo Comments • Weibo Comments Purchase Intent (Daigou/promotional, Non- • WeChat Mentions • WeChat Mentions • WeChat Sentiment Daigou/promotional) • WeChat Reads • WeChat Reads • Weibo/WeChat Content • WeChat Likes • WeChat Likes Theme (Topic, Image) 4 WHAT DIFFERENTIATES OUR REPORT? SECTION 1 KOL PERFORMANCE OVERIEW Brands frequently focus on general rankings; that is, who are the top Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in China? In doing so, brands often overlook the nuances which separate, and frequently serve as an advantage, of each specific KOL. For example, while some KOLs are powerful in generating social buzz and are able to build brand awareness, others are more effective in shaping consumer perception of those same brands. Still others are noted for their ability to spur purchase intent within a given consumer base. In view of these many attributes, we initiated this analysis through two meta lenses: 1) Social influence, and 2) Commercial influence. Top Stars by Industry: We next set out to determine how different Social KOLs meet the needs of particular industries. With few exceptions, Influence KOLs do not fit a “one size fits all’ celebrity. As a result, our analysis provides samples for five distinct industries: Commercial Influence (1) Activewear; (2) Consumer Electronics; Industry (3) Food & Beverage; Relevance (4) High Street Fashion; and (5) Luxury Fashion. The second part of Section 1 includes KOL rankings for the five aforementioned verticals. * All KOLs listed in this report are not necessarily content creators, but were nonetheless mentioned within the content captured for the analysis 5 WHAT DIFFERENTIATES OUR REPORT? SECTION 2 KOL SELECTION FOR SPECIFIC BUSINESS NEEDS Practically speaking, most brands have specified goals and defined budgets for which to execute campaigns. In Section 2, we illustrate a path to answering such examples commonly associated with a brand’s KOL campaign in China. These include: • Is a KOL’s image a fit for my brand? As a brand looks to find an appropriate KOL, it often faces the question of whether a KOL will either burnish a brand’s image or diminish it. • What are the names that have “high potential” and can help my brand, yet KOL are not currently on ‘everyone’s’ radar? This applies to both small brands KOL Topic Image with limited budgets as well as large brands who want to leverage a KOL different tier of KOL. Effectiveness • In partnership with a KOL, will fans likely be talking about my brand and KOL products, or merely their love for the KOL I have contracted? With a large Cost sum of money invested, brands routinely want to know if a KOL is an KOL Fan effective promoter of the brand or merely an effective promoter of himself. Quality • In addition, via proprietary data analytics, we also presented three particular use cases to help brands understand the possibilities of combining some of these questions. * All KOLs listed in this report are not necessarily content creators, but were nonetheless mentioned within the content captured for the analysis 6 METHODOLOGY SCOPE Selected Industries Activewear Our goal was to provide KOL rankings, primarily celebrities, associated with brand Nike, Adidas, Anta, etc. content on social media platforms that could help inform any brand using or Consumer Electronics invested in KOLs. Beats, Oppo, Huawei, etc. Food & Beverage In order to achieve this, we aimed to compare the performance of KOLs mentioned Coca-Cola, KFC, Starbucks, etc. along with leading brands across five industries, including both foreign brands and High Street Fashion Chinese brands. The KOLs included herein had the highest degree of impact on Topshop, Vetements, Mo & Co, etc. Chinese consumers and the most active investments in KOL collaborations. ABSTRACT This research has three overarching purposes. First, it aims to test VR’s capability as a news medium compared to TV and Web. Second, it attempts to identify the differences in the responses to VR news, TV news, and Web news between the Korean and the U.S. respondents. Third, it formulates a theoretical model regarding media user’s news information processing across VR, TV, and Web: Model of Interactive News Consumption Across Media (MINCAM). A 2 x 2 x 3 mixed design study was conducted using the between-subjects factors of country (Korea/the U.S.) and story proximity (Seoul, Korea/Syracuse, New York) as well as the within-subjects factors of level of interactivity (Web/TV/VR) and story arousal (Relic/Airport/Gunshot). Outcomes indicated that VR news resulted in higher levels of presence, attention, sharing behaviors, arousal, pleasant activated emotion, perceived effects on self, perceived effects on others, interactivity, and perceived self-relevance than TV news or Web news.

PRESS STATEMENT Textile CEOs Urge Candidates to Elaborate More Fully on Plans to Stop U.S. Manufacturing Job Loss and to Boost Competitiveness CONTACT: Lloyd Wood, Dir. of Membership and Media Outreach (202) 452-0866 or [email protected] For Immediate Release May 1, 2008 North Carolina textile industry CEOs urged candidates for public office to put forth more detailed plans to stop U.S. manufacturing job loss and to boost competitiveness at telephone conference call media event held on May 1. Allen Gant, CEO of Glen Raven Inc. of Glen Raven, North Carolina said, “America cannot have a prosperous future without a healthy domestic manufacturing sector. That’s why all candidates must more fully spell out where they stand on such key manufacturing issues such as stopping job loss and boosting the competitiveness of the U.S. government’s manufacturing policy.” Illustrating the challenges facing North Carolina’s economy, the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC) released a comprehensive report that showed a severe decline in manufacturing investment in North Carolina and that the state has been losing high-wage jobs and replacing them with low-wage jobs. It also broke out manufacturing job gain/loss by sector for North Carolina’s twelve largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Reacting to the report, Gant continued, "North Carolina can’t keep trading good manufacturing jobs for lower paying service sector jobs and expect to grow its economy as fast as it needs to grow.” “Americans haven't stopped buying manufactured goods; they just aren’t buying as many from North Carolina as before because of trade cheats like China.

  • Natural Gas in China's Power Sector
December 2020 Natural gas in China’s power sector: Challenges and the road ahead China’s pledge to peak its emissions before 2030 suggests that decarbonization of its coal-dominant power sector will be key to fulfilling this goal. Natural gas emits around 50 per cent less greenhouse gases than coal when used in electricity generation.1 With the rapid deployment of variable renewables, gas-fired power plants could also enhance the flexibility of the power system and boost renewables integration. However, the development of natural gas in China’s power sector has been slow, with installed gas-fired capacity standing at 97 GW by October 2020 out of 2,100 GW total installed generating capacity, according to the latest data by the China Electricity Council.2 This falls short of the target of 110 GW by 2020, set out in the 13th Five Year plan (2016–2020). Gas-fired generation only accounted for 3.2 per cent of China’s total power production in 2019, significantly below coal’s share of 62 per cent. Average running hours were 2,646 last year, indicating that gas-fired power plants have been underutilized. This analysis discusses the latest developments in China’s gas-fired power generation, the main challenges, and the road ahead both in the context of the upcoming 14th Five-Year Plan and the recently announced 2060 carbon neutrality goal. Expensive imported gas, costly turbine technology, and the lack of fully competitive electricity markets have been the main obstacles limiting the role of natural gas in China’s power sector.

  • "Running Man" to "Mission X": Variety Shows As Cultural Representation of Local Identities
From "Running Man" to "Mission X": Variety Shows as Cultural Representation of Local Identities Nurul Laili Nadhifah, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia The Asian Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2018 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Running Man, as one of Korean successful variety shows, never fails to advertise parts of Korean culture like food, K-Pop, cultural values, traditional games, history, even historical sites. With quite a huge amount of fans not only from South Korea but also from other countries as well, Running Man also occasionally encourages interactions between the hosts and their fans in some games, indirectly introducing Korean culture to all over the world, resulting in the increase of consumption on Korean culture’s products. This reality show concept is, then, adapted into Indonesian variety show called Mission X. Quite different from Running Man, Mission X has its own ways in introducing Indonesia and its culture. This study aims to analyze the way Running Man and Mission X represent themselves as the platforms of advertising their local identities by applying Fiske’s vertical intertextuality and cultural identity theories. Drawing on data collected from the shows as the main texts and SNS as secondary texts, while data of fans’ reactions are gathered by doing random interview online. This research, through comparative studies, intents to explain the similarities and differences of cultural representations shown on those shows. The findings show different aspects of local culture displayed by those variety shows caused different methods of representing them. While Running Man introducing different aspects and values of culture like food or history through games and certain themes, Mission X tends to introduce cultural aspects more through display of setting.

  • Cultural Governance in Contemporary China: Popular Culture, Digital Technology, and the State
! ! ! ! CULTURAL GOVERNANCE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA: POPULAR CULTURE, DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY, AND THE STATE BY LUZHOU LI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emeritus John Nerone, Chair Assistant Professor Amanda Ciafone Professor Emeritus Dan Schiller Professor Kent Ono, University of Utah ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a study of the historical formation and transformation of the Chinese online audiovisual industry under forces of strategic political calculations, expanding market relations, and growing social participation, and the cultural ramifications of this process, especially the kind of transformations digital technologies have wrought on the state-TV-station-centered mode of cultural production/distribution and regulatory apparatuses. Through this case, the project aims to theorize the changing mode of cultural governance of post-socialist regimes in the context of digital capitalism. Using mixed methods of documentary research, interviews with industry practitioners, participant observations of trade fairs/festivals, and critical discourse analyses of popular cultural texts, the study finds that the traditional broadcasting and the online video sectors are structured along two different political economic mechanisms. While the former is dominated by domestic capital and heavily regulated by state agencies, the latter is supported by transnational capital and less regulated. Digital technologies coupled with transnational capital thus generate new cultural flows, processes, and practices, which produces a heterogeneous and contested cultural sphere in the digital environment that substantially differs from the one created by traditional television.
