Ladies and gentlemen, this unique chain of institutions started in 1986 with just 5 students. Today, this has grown to a chain of 101 rural schools with 52,288 students in North Indian states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, all in remote rural areas.

Our rural students did very well in the Grade X CBSE Board exams this year. All 1328 students from 16 rural schools who appeared; passed in 1st Division with 92 students achieving a perfect score of CGPA-10.

In the Sr. Secondary Exams, 404 students appeared with 90% in first division. The topper Ms. Gagandeep Kaur from village Bhadaur, Punjab aggregated 95%. Ms. Navjot Kaur from village Ratia, Haryana got admission in IIT Delhi while Ms. Karamjit Kaur and Ms. Harveer Kaur joined MBBS at Medical College . Mohit Kumar, Harbir Singh and Tejbir Singh have joined National Defence Academy (NDA).

Besides, a large number of students have secured admissions in other premier institutions of the country and abroad. The one fact that I am proud of is that all are from rural areas.

In sports, I am delighted to inform you that Amandeep Singh, 12th from Baramullah (J&K) represented in Asian Skiing Championship, Korea and secured 4th position. He has been awarded 'Sher-e- Kashmir' award by the Jammu & Kashmir Govt. Our Weight lifting team won laurels for the school. Harjit Singh, XII won the gold in the State Weight Lifting Championships.

In athletics, Daljit Singh bagged the silver medal in high jump. Hashneet Singh of grade VII got silver medal in the 100 mts race. Our Jr. Girls Hockey team won the North Zone hockey championship whilst the Boys Jr. Hockey team was runner-up.

The Kalgidhar Trust has launched a unique program of empowering rural women of North India by establishing the Institute of Rural Women Empowerment. About 1200 rural girls are being provided Free training at Baru Sahib, District Sirmaur, HP. Subsequently; these girls will be employed in our rural schools as teachers.

The Kalgidhar Trust meets the entire expenditure on program, amounting to about Rs. 6 crores annually. To create a bank of willing Teachers, ready to work in deep remote rural pockets, we have established teachers' training centres at Dehradun, Kerala, Delhi, (in collaboration with Cambridge University), , Cheema & Baru Sahib.

Eternal University is running its 5th year and offers 6 disciplines at the graduate level and 12 programs at the PG and doctorate levels. Construction on the second University has begun to develop in the campus at University Talwandi Sabo, which was sanctioned by the State Govt. a year ago. Today world requires more and more active processing of information.

The old model of pushing students in age-group batches with one-pace-fits-all curriculum is paving way for exploring new vistas of learning. We have introduced technology in a big way by introducing learning through three-dimensional visual – mode of software modules by establishing Pearson Edurite's 456 smart classrooms in all the 100 rural Rural Schools.

All the rural schools have departments of creative art, sports, media, language lab, adventure and nature clubs & theatre.

With folded hands and humility, we seek each one's cooperation to join this movement that is an antidote to the cancerous growth of drugs and alcohol abuse that have shredded our social fabric and blessings to give us strength and wisdom to accomplish the unfinished tasks.

Also, please bless these children of God so that they feel the pain of the suffering millions and provide the much-needed succor and healing touch to the needy, and thereby realize our dream and vision and mission of establishing permanent peace in the world.

1 ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Kalgidhar Trust & Society is a not for profit charitable organization working for the cause of 'rural transformation' by promoting quality low-cost Education, Healthcare, Women Empowerment, Social Welfare, Rural Economic Uplift and Disaster Response & Rehabilitation to the deprived sections, in far- flung rural areas of North India.

It has been instrumental in bringing about silent but sure reforms to uplift the socio-economic status of the rural poor. The rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, backward hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are being covered with 101 outstanding Schools affiliated with CBSE. These Schools are catering to around 52,000 students.

The rural areas of northern India lack modern scientific education and employment opportunities because of the widespread illiteracy and lack of quality education, since it is only available in the urban areas. The girl child in these areas is even worse off, due to son-centric societal attitudes; girls aged from 8-25 years are generally forced to remain at their houses for sharing hands at domestic works and are discouraged to go for education. Most of the districts in North Indian states are 'gender-critical'. The gender ratio has dipped to as low as 750 girls for every 1000 boys in many areas because of the poor social status of women and high level of female feticide.

The poor educational prospects, especially for women, makes the rural people more susceptible to poverty, drug & alcohol abuse, which in turn leads to more violence against women and marital discord. The states of Rajasthan and Punjab in North India, for example, border Pakistan & Afghanistan, which is the largest producer of Opium. This has lead to Punjab being the number one transit point for opium in the world (World Drug Report by UNDOC, 2007). The trafficking of drugs has impacted the local population with one in every three males and two out of three school going students now taking drugs (source: The Tribune, June 2009 report).

Good value-based education and good job prospects is a defense against drug & alcohol abuse. While the Kalgidhar Trust operates drug/alcohol de-addiction centers, it hopes that in future such centers would be unnecessary. But in the present scenario, such centers would continue to bring back the addicts to the mainstream of the society. It is a call for action since education will prevent the future generations from becoming drug addicts.

2 RURAL EDUCATION

Rural Schools established and managed by The Kalgidhar Trust are low-cost co-educational English medium affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is the largest educational board in India and is duly recognized by the Department of Education, Government of India. Akal Academy, Baru Sahib, Dist. Sirmaur, HP (amongst India's most backward 100 districts) is the flagship residential school for its 101 day-boarding branches. In coming years more number of schools is expected to start.

The Kalgidhar Trust has developed a value-based education system combined with modern scientific English language based curriculum. The schools are set up in remote inaccessible areas, which are generally missed out by government and private education system which find them unviable. By encouraging local donors to donate their lands and encouraging local volunteers to actively help in setting up the schools, the organization manages to create a sense of ownership and accountability within the community. After completion of the school programs, the students are well equipped for higher education and employment. The organization lays emphasis on educating the girl-child and believes that by educating a girl child, not only the entire family but 7 other families get educated.

The organization provides quality education and serves all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender in the remote rural deprived areas of Northern India and believes that imparting value-based education not only meets the demands of the present time but also trains students to use their skills for the welfare of humanity.

KPMG has published a study on the rural school (Akal Academy) model and suggested a hub and spoke model for further expansion. The organization aims to make good quality schools accessible and available to all in remote rural areas. The target is to open 500 value based modern scientific schools by 2020, such that there is a school within 10-15 Kms in rural north India, this will give the rural masses a chance to participate in economic gains of the nation.

This educational system would produce productive citizens, which in turn would be a bulwark against social evils. It will lead towards sustainable employment for both men and women, which will bring prosperity and social harmony to the nation.

10 E-SMART CLASSROOMS

The organization feels that it is the high time to bridge the tech- education gap between the urban and rural youth.  The rural youth despite being talented is deprived of the learning opportunities driven by the technology. This divide would make the rural student incompetent, thus impacting the economy of the country.  If India is looking to become one of the top three economies globally, can we actually achieve that goal without empowering the 600 million people who live in rural India. Rural India lives in a different time warp and will continue to do so. Unless we fix rural India, we can't be a rocking or robust economy.  We must create job opportunities in the rural India through education and try to stop the migration to urban areas.  The pattern followed by these villagers is the same as that of immigrants the world over—it's usually the working age men who first go to the land of opportunity and once they find jobs, they start bringing over family members one at a time.  Most of the rural folks will not leave if they lead comfortable lives and have opportunities for economic growth in their own backyards.  It is an innovative product which is easy to use and proven to enhance learning for students. Ease of use ensures teachers can quickly start using SMART products and experiencing the benefits they bring to teaching and learning.  E-SMART Classrooms are revolutionizing the world of education. Teachers and students are applauding E- SMART Classrooms and the utilization of visual learning.  The blackboard, chalk and eraser may become obsolete with this new technology that is so advanced that it retrieves information, notes and lessons with a simple click. This would enable children to peek into the world sitting in their classrooms.  It has been observed that science experiments done on the E-SMART Classrooms have better student results than before the board was introduced into the classroom.  Viewing presentations and videos makes understanding subject matter more efficient. Inquiry based learning, which displays a situation on the board, creates numerous questions and answers that enhance learning.  Students like it because it's attractive, it satisfies their curiosity and is novel. It's visually appealing and that's a completely different way to learn, it's a good educational tool.  Teachers are able to access the internet and show the material to the class without the use of an individual laptop for each student. E-SMART Classrooms enhance the understanding of material and have opened up the world of geography that we could not have before.  This technology has truly enhanced teaching and learning. Having the material presented more visually and creatively, as well as being able to write material on the board, copy it and erase it is a tremendous asset for student learning.

In 2012, 8 students were selected as Supervisors, Temple Managers and Music teachers in our various centers. Woman Empowerment and Gender Equality

The poor educational infrastructure prospect, especially for women, makes people more susceptible to poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, which in turn leads to more violence against women, the organizations' strategy focuses on setting up new schools, mainly in the rural areas. In the past the organization has successfully demonstrated that nearby access to value-based quality education attracts locals in very high numbers to send their children especially girls to these schools. Local population sees English education as the means to upward mobility.

Some observations

The number of patients seeking treatment in these centers has been increasing every year.

The number of cases hailing from urban area and from far off places shows a rising trend. The centre has emerged as the only unit of its kind in the traditional Malwa belt of Punjab (Bathinda, Sangrur, etc) providing comprehensive de-addiction facilities.

The number of younger, unmarried and more educated patients shows a transition towards higher side. The youngest patient treated was aged 12 years.

80% cases who sought admission were addicted to Bhukki (poppy-husk/crushed dode). The predominant addictions are Smack/Heroin, Bupermorphine, Injection, Cocaine based syrups, Dextropropoxyphene based caps, Carisoprodol based tabs, Benzodiazepines e.g. Alprazolam, etc. and Alcohol. The outcome of the crude opiates/Bhukki addicts was more encouraging as compared to the current hard and poly substance abuse cases.

In a small no. of cases (majority of them being teenagers), use of volatile substances e.g. Eraser fluids, rubber solutions/ adhesives etc. has been noticed. Use of such substances is relatively a recent phenomenon.

Spiritual strivings

The de-addiction treatment receiving patients are encouraged to tap their inner spiritual strengths and help them inculcate core values like humility, forgiveness, gratitude, truthfulness, etc. and the power of prayer to the Almighty, recitation of prayers and the divine name to confront the feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. They remain regular in reciting on the Divine Name and inspire other addicts too to denounce drug addiction and alcoholism. www.RuralEducation.in

Drug Abuse

Drug -addiction has become the greatest menace in Punjab. The youth of Punjab is getting deeply afflicted by various intoxicants, adversely affecting the socio-economic fabric of the society.

With advent of value-based scientific education in all the Rural Schools, the entire student community of these academies is free from drug problem.

With their drug-free character, their family and even extended family members have given up the use of drugs.

The area around the academies up to a radius of around 25-30 km is showing significant reduction in drug use and crime. To curb this menace further, the students in partnership with Punjab Police have been holding anti-drug rallies, seminars, debates and distributing anti-drug literature. Drug De-Addiction Awareness Week

Rural Schools observed De-Addiction Week during 6-11 February, 2012. As a preparatory, special classes were organized at the Rural Schools.

The teachers organized seminars for other teachers in their respective schools to motivate the students more effectively so that they can make their parents and relatives aware about the menace. All the students took pledge regarding not to use drugs.

Among various programs, some Rural Schools including Cheema, Bilga, Dhindsa, Dhanal Kalan, Gomti, Jand Sahib and Mahal Kalan took out Anti-Drug Rallies, passing through various lanes and bye-lanes of their respective towns and villages.

The students were carrying banners, buntings and placards highlighting the impact of this social evil on the society. They also delivered speeches, and recited poems highlighting the hazards of drug addiction. Tree Plantation Drive

Highest ever blood donation collection for Himachal Pradesh at Baru Sahib

On receiving the special request from Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla; regarding urgent need of blood for conducting pending surgeries on emergency basis, the management of the Charitable Hospital, conducted the blood donation camp on 16 February.

A special team of doctors arrived at Baru Sahib for the collection of the blood from IGMC, Shimla. The camp started at 9 in the morning. A large number of volunteers were seen waiting for their turn to donate blood for the needy brethren. It was rather a surprising scenario, where one could find donors rubbing their shoulders to donate their blood before the others. One could see the glow on the faces of the blood donors while participating selflessly for the noble cause. The girl students largely outnumbered their male counterparts reversing the trend that females are reluctant to donate blood.

Mrs. Manasi Sahay Thakur, IAS, Assistant Commissioner (Development), Rajgarh; formally inaugurated the blood donation camp. It was sheer surprise for her to see the big rush for blood donation comprising of young students, faculty and volunteers. She was in all praise for the initiative taken by the Charitable Hospital where regular international multi-specialty camps are held several times round the year, wherein all the minor and major surgeries are conducted by the specialists attending the camp from across the globe, thus bringing world class treatment at the doorstep of the rural poor and that too free of cost. Mrs. Manasi said, “It was overwhelming to see the response of the students and their commitment for such a noble cause”.

475 blood units were collected in a single day, which is a new record for the state of Himachal Pradesh. The other interesting and encouraging feature of this blood donation camp was the participation of 80% of the female members, where the national average is only 6%. The students of various professional colleges of Eternal University, College of Engineering and Technology, College of Nursing, Institute of Rural Women Empowerment, staff of the rural school and a large number of volunteers participated.

Save Environment

The Rural Schools have established their respective Eco-Clubs for greening their schools and doing environment-related positive activities. As usual, the month of August 2011 was observed as the Environment Awareness Month.

NCC cadets of 4 girl battalions in association with the students of Rural Schools organized Chetna March in Sangrur district of Punjab. 500 girls from five districts of Punjab namely Patiala, Mohali, Mansa, Sangrur and Kurali under the command of Col S.P.S. Cheema, Commanding Officer, joined this awareness rally, which was flagged off by Baba Iqbal Singh Ji, President, The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, from the local rest house of Punjab Works Department.

Pollution is a cause of concern, which is escalating day by day and unless some drastic measures are taken, pollution can turn fatal. Keeping this in view, the two organizations joined hands to help curb the menace of pollution-one para-military and other social welfare institution.

The participants were carrying placards, pamphlets and posters to caution against this life-threatening hazard. The topics included using paddy straw as fertilizers, save trees and conserve water, if you want to live in this world, love the mother earth, etc. This rally covered several lanes and roads of Sangrur district passing through the main bus-stand of the city, it culminated at www.RuralEducation.in

Patiala gate. The bystanders were seen showing interest in the march, by walking down a few steps with the marchers. Risaldar Maj. Surjit Singh and Subedar Maj. Bhupinder Singh were supervising the march. Baba Iqbal Singh Ji in his address said that the main reason of pollution is the impact of western culture on our society. We will have to visit door to door to caution against the evil of pollution. Wherever the environment is polluted, social evils like drugs are spreading. To contain this malaise, the organization through its 101 schools is trying hard. Anti Pollution Rally

Rural Schools Muktsar and Cheema took out grand rallies against pollution in May 2011 in their respective towns, which won applause and appreciation for the institution both from the local administration and from general public.

The Eco Club students of Rural Schools also visited the nearby villages to make the farmers a ware of the harmful effects of burning paddy and other crop residue. They also went door-to-door to explain the drastic consequences in future by continuing this practice of burning crop residue. Recycling of Waste Paper

The students of 'Eco Club', Cheema Sahib launched a new project where the students recycle the waste paper and prepare drawing sheets. The students gifted a beautiful painting done by the students on the recycled paper to Smt. Shailendra Kaur, DFO, Sangrur. Mrs. Kaur applauded the effort of the students and added that it is noteworthy on one hand, the academy is providing world class education in English medium on CBSE pattern and on the other hand trying such experiments through innovative techniques in their laboratories, it is helping in all round development of the students. She was all the more happy because this unique project will also help in keeping the environment pollution free.

The students explained to the DFO, the process of recycling the waste and the ingredients that are added to it. The students also explained that these sheets can be used for making posters too. It can also be used as a replacement for thermocol, which is 7 times costlier to the recycled paper. Save The Girl Child

Female feticide is another serious evil, particularly in Punjab, causing a serious female-male reduction in the population. Several Rural Schools conducted awareness programs against it. The rural areas of North India is even worse off, due to son-centric societal attitudes; girls aged from 8-25 years are generally forced to remain at their houses for sharing hands at domestic works and are discouraged to go for education.

Most of the districts in North Indian states are ‘gender-critical’. The gender ratio has dipped to as low as 750 girls for every 1000 boys in many areas because of the poor National Drawing and Painting Competition

Impressed by the excellent facilities and their interaction with the students and the staff, they feel pleasure in recording their views. Some such comments are reproduced here :

We had an opportunity to visit the Academy at Barn Sahib on the occasion of the Annual Day. It was a wonderful experience. We were blessed to meet Baba Ji who has devoted his life to a mission divine.

We also met dedicated volunteers which was very inspiring. The Academy and the other Institutions setup under the auspices of the Eternal University are of world class and even beyond with a human, spiritual & value-based diversion.

We pray to God that the Institution may prosper & progress as per the vision of the great Saints.

Surendra Singh Khurana, Former Chairman, Railway Board, MD/IRWD

My first visit to India marked by a very special experience of such commitment and dedication to the betterment of this world, its objects and in such a wonderful environment.

It is a place of spiritual power. I have seen this Institution growing and had opportunity of meeting Baba JI since 1978, when I was working in the Agriculture Department.

It is a wonder to see his vision to transform the society.

The institute is inculcating traditional values with modern education. It is a great honour to be here and I am proud of the torch- bearers like you who are preserving the culture and values of the great nation.

Sanjiv Sharma, Forest Officer, Sangrur

Very impressive school. The facilities are wonderful so being a person from a Punjab village, I feel the students are very fortunate to have this school. Dr. Kulvinder Gill, Washington State University, USA

A very inspiring school, teachers and students are excited, eager and engaged in the learning activities. I am troubled by the unequal (smaller) number of girls - in this and all of the Rural Schools.

How can we improve the male-female ratio, so that all children get this remarkable chance to learn to grow?
