MENJANGAN ISLAND Menjangan Island Part of West Bali National Park, Menjangan was Bali’s first internationally- known diving location and is still famous for its coral walls with easy conditions, warm waters and great visibility that can reach 50m+. Due to the white sand and good visibility, there is usually a lot of sunlight to bring out the bright colours of the schooling fishes surrounding you. The walls are covered with soft corals, gorgonian fans and sponges. We frequently see batfishes and Big-eyed trevallys, as well as turtles and barracudas. Can be done as a Day Trip but we recommend an overnight stay in the area. Menjangan is famous for wall diving They descend to varying depths, the shallowest being 26m, the deepest 60m+. These walls are full of small and medium sized fish. The walls are full of small nooks and crannies, overhangs, and bigger cavelettes, crevasses, etc. They are covered with soft corals, gorgonian fans and sponges. The Anker Wreck is the deepest dive site offered by AquaMarine; we believe that the good visibility and calm conditions mean it will present no problems to experienced divers. At Garden Eel Point you will see some of the most healthy and diverse coral on Menjangan. The cracks and breaks in the wall are filled with a great diversity of reef fish. This area is also known for sightings of white tip reef shark, small schools of barracuda, turtles and napoleon Copyright: POSTLETHWAITE wrasse. OUTSIDE TULAMBEN – PALUNG-PALUNG, BATU KELEBIT AND EMERALD

Five minutes East of Tulamben (by local outrigger) are the sites of Palung Palung / Alamanda / Batu Kelebit and Emerald Point. Within the Tulamben area, these are the sites where you are most likely to see pelagics including, on rare occasions, dolphins. Palung-Palung is a series of 6 rocky ridges and 5 intervening bowls. The bottom of these bowls change from one end of the site to the other – from a cover of finely branched acroporid coral to white sand at the eastern end of the site. The coral is well protected and very healthy. There are diverse soft corals and gorgonians. Here you might sight sharks and, at the other end of the scale, pygmy seahorses. Batu Kelebit is located south east of Tulamben Area. Kelebit Rocks are 2 large underwater boulders. The dive area is dramatic with steep ridges that receives deep offshore water and the visibility is usually very good. The site offers a variety of sea fans, coral bushes and sponges with sand patches between. The colour of the sand is lighter than at Tulamben Bay and provides an excellent colour contrast. Large pelagics can be sighted here including dog tooth tuna, schools of barracuda, reef shark and bumbhead parrotfishes. Emerald is located in a small bay a little to the east of Batu Kelebit. BEYOND TULAMBEN - KUBU WRECK AND PENUKTUKAN

Kubu is the location of Bali’s latest shipwreck. In late 2012, the 85m Holland vessel was scuttled just 25m from the shore. The wreck lies with the stern at 30m and the bow at just 10m from the surface. On deck there is a VW car to provide another artificial reef habitat. From the shore, at 7-8m depth, the reef begins with coral bommies and rocks on a sand slope that descends to 35m. The reef has schools of reef fish and a good array of soft and hard corals with some beautiful Staghorn corals, barrel sponges and Gorgonian sea fans. There are regular sightings of reef sharks, Bumphead parrotfish, barracuda and turtles. For Muck divers many nudis and other macro creatures dotted around the black sand slope, together with eels, cuttlefish, Leaf scorpionfish… Two small walls offer gentle past numerous sea fans and sponges, as well as hard and soft corals. Kubu has the highest of lionfish and Blue- spotted rays. Penuktukan: The compact location includes sites named Coral Stairway and Angel Canyon, and an area of artificial structures to encourage coral growth. Soft coral covered bommies are found at 12-25 metres while a gentle current encourages bigger fish in these areas. A variety of crabs (Soft coral, Boxer, Xeno, Spider), Blue-spotted ray and Eagle ray and many Garden eels.

NUSA PENIDA SD, PED, SENTAL AREA Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan). The water here is fairly cold but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals and prolific fish, occasional turtles, reef sharks and in July to November Mola-Mola (the weird and wonderful sunfish). AquaMarine offers nine dive sites at Nusa Penida, three of which (Sental, Ped, SD) are along Nusa Penida’s north coast. The majority of dives at Nusa Penida are drift dives. Sental, Ped & SD, as mentioned above these sites are located on the coral reef that runs the length of Nusa Penida’s north coast and offer great drift diving. This reef is richest at SD. The reef has a lot of soft corals, and also many kinds of fish, such as Moorish idols, sweetlips, lionfish, moray eel, scorpion fish and napoleon wrasse. The reef (3-25m) is mainly a steep slope with flattened barrel sponges (due to the current) and some stretches of deep wall (particularly between Ped and Sental). The ever-present current means that your dive will always be a drift dive, although the currents can change direction during a dive. Visibility is usually 18- 30m. Around 20-25m on this slope there is a good chance of seeing large pelagics (ocean- going fish) such as manta ray, tuna and barracuda because of the currents. At SD the coral starts at 3m so it is possible (current Copyright: POSTLETHWAITE permitting) to snorkel. GILI SELANG The small island of Gili Selang lies on Bali’s furthest eastern tip. Your dive generally starts on the black sand slope which is dotted with nudibranchs and an abundance of other macro critters including gobies. The slope becomes a healthy, sheltered reef at a mere 4m and is a rich mixture of many, multi-coloured soft and hard corals. Here we expect visibility of 20-25 m, although there can be meaning water temp can be between 20-30°C, and that you will see Yellow margin morays, schooling Big-eyed trevally, cuttlefish, and Pygmy seahorses on the Gorgonian sea fans. The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies, the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and therefore home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes. As you follow the reef downwards, the sand slope on your left becomes a wall which is known for occasional ‘spinning’ currents, strong down current combined with a horizontal current from the other side of the channel. Here, and at the other less protected areas of Gili Selang, you may well see Black-tip and White-tip reef sharks, Eagle rays, turtles, Bluefin trevally, barracudas, Napoleon wrasse,

Visibility can reach 30m although lower is the norm due to waves and currents, the site is quite unprotected, but the water is usually flat and calm. Puri Jati is a wide, very gentle brown sand slope, about 50m from the beach until you reach 10m where it becomes steeper. The right side has a river which should be avoided if it’s been raining. There is no coral here but, depending on the season (and fishermen), you will find sea grasses, sea pens, loads of tiny Mushroom corals, and algae-covered debris, all providing shelter for small, well-camouflaged critters. SECRET BAY Gilimanuk – known as Secret Bay in Bali’s dive community – is the only bay off the narrow Bali Strait where currents can reach 7 knots. A reef lying just outside the mouth of the bay creates a channel through which these waters are swept meaning the bay basically acts as a massive catch tank (a big underwater nursery!) for many larval fish. These strong tidal currents mean that the fish and invertebrates are extremely healthy, colourful and well-fed (also that the water is quite cold, around 20-25°C and is what makes Gilimanuk an extremely appealing dive site for macro photographers. The bottom is fine, black and grey volcanic sand with almost no coral, although there is some sea grass and often a great deal of debris to provide shelter and hiding places for the multitude of macro critters found here. Due to its shallowness and lack of water movement, too much fin movement and/or less than perfect control will stir up the bottom, leaving you with low visibility. The best time to dive is on the incoming or around high tide. Gilimanuk Bay contains many rare macro-photography subjects that include nudis, gobies, frogfish, dragonets (including both the colourful Mandarinfish and Picture dragonet), abundant seahorse/pipefish, juvenile Batavia batfish, large areas of Long-spined sea urchins with clingfish, Snake eels, Cockatoo waspfish, Copyright: ROGAGA and many, many other organisms.
