A Dalzell man died during a single vehicle wreck on U.S. 15 South in Sumter County near Timmerman Street about 3 a.m. on Wednesday. South Carolina Highway Pa- trol Lance Cpl. Sunny Collins said the driver, 27-year-old Mi- cheal Keyshawn Workman, was traveling North on U.S. 15 South when his 2012 Nissan went off the right side of the road, struck a ditch and over- turned. Workman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Collins said. South Carolina Highway Pa- trol continues to investigate the incident.

BY JIM HILLEY [email protected]

Putting a Quonset hut in the middle of downtown Summerton to good use has been a puzzle for the Clarendon County community. “Juicy Davis ran his mechanic shop there,” said Clarendon County Com- mission Chairman Dwight Stewart, who represents the Summerton area on the council. “The town bought it and they had the police station in the front and the fire department in the back before they built a new build- ing.” Summerton Public Works Director William “Bucky” Brailsford said the hut, now known as “No. 4 Main Street,” has been used for a couple of garage sales and church revivals since the fire department moved out about four years ago. “It’s mostly sat empty,” he said. A group of Clemson University ar- chitecture students may have come up with a solution. The students, along with Associate Professor Daniel Harding, worked with local Summerton playwright and author Cedrick Leflueur to come up with a concept that would be flexible and reflect the community’s unique history. Harding, who is director of the Clemson Research & Design Center, has been developing prefabricated ply- wood shapes that can be used to con- struct affordable housing. Several houses have been built using the con- cept, he said. The affordable housing is one of several projects intended to use as much South Carolina produced materials as possible, he said. With the Palmetto State’s abundant forests, ply- wood is major product. The lumber industry is also a big JIM HILLEY / THE SUMTER ITEM part of Summerton’s history, which ABOVE LEFT: Students from the Clemson University School of Architecture display a model of the university’s system of precut ply- stretches “from the Civil War to Civil wood system that may be adapted for use at No. 4 Main Street in Summerton. USC MEN’S BASKETBALL USC FOOTBALL Gamecock great Thornwell’s time to shine Lattimore to speak at Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast

BY DENNIS BRUNSON [email protected]

Marcus Lattimore, the for- mer standout running back at the University of South Caroli- na, will be the keynote speaker for the Sumter Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 4. The event, which is held in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer, will be held at Sumter County Civic Center at 700 West Liberty LATTIMORE Street. Breakfast will begin at 6:45 a.m. with the program, whose theme is “For Your Great Name’s Sake! Hear Us… For- give Us… Heal us!,” starting at 7:30. Lattimore was an All-Ameri- can running back at Byrnes High School in Duncan. He signed with USC and helped lead the Gamecocks to the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division title as a freshman.
