Draft Road Traffic (Special Speed Limits) Bye-Laws No.1 of 2018

Longford County Council in exercise of the powers conferred on them by Section 9 of the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (No. 44 of 2004) propose to make the following bye-laws in respect of the area comprising the administrative County of Longford. l. These bye-laws may be cited as the , Road Traffic (Special Speed Limits) Bye-Laws, No.1, 2018. 2. These Bye-Laws shall come into operation on the day of 2018 3. In these Bye-Laws:  “the Act of 1993” means the Roads Act, 1993 (No. 14 of 1993);  “the Act of 1994” means the Road Traffic Act, 1994 (No. 7 of 1994);  “the Act of 2004” means the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (No. 44 of 2004);  “built up area” has the meaning assigned to it by the Act of 2004;  “distance” means distance measured along the centre line of the road;  “the Minister” means the Minister for Transport;  “motorway” has the meaning assigned to it by the Act of 1993;  “national road” has the meaning assigned to it by the Act of 1993;  “” has the meaning assigned to it by the Act of 1993;  “local road” has the meaning assigned to it by the Act of 1993;  “road” means a public road and includes a motorway.

4. The Special Speed Limits as defined in Section 9 of the Act of 2004 shall be those speed limits for mechanically propelled vehicles as are specified in the schedule hereto on the roads specified in the schedule to these bye-laws. 5. There shall be exempted from the special speed limits prescribed in Article No.4 of these bye-laws, and from built-up area speed limit, the following : a) an ambulance, b) a fire brigade vehicle, and c) a vehicle used by a member of the Garda Siochana in the performance of the duties of that member d) any vehicle subject to a speed limit as prescribed by The Minister pursuant to Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act 2004.

6. The County Longford, Road Traffic (Speed Limits) Bye-Laws 2004, are hereby revoked.

FIRST SCHEDULE

Speed limit of Thirty (30) kilometres per hour is prescribed for all public roads within the following housing estates and the surrounding Public road network as represented on the accompanying maps for each town or village in the list.
