National Senior Certificate (NSC) Awards for 2014

Awards to Schools

Category 1 - Excellence In Academic Performance In this category, awards are made to all schools in the province (including independent schools) that have achieved excellence in academic results in 2014, based on the following criteria:

Category 1a – all schools (a) Consistency in number of Grade 12 candidates over the 3 year period of 2012 to 20141 (b) An overall pass rate of at least 95% in 2014 (c) Percentage of candidates with access to Bachelor’s degree study that is 80% and above (d) Percentage of candidates with Mathematics passes that is 60% and above

The ranking of schools will be determined by calculating a weighted ranking index as follows:  Point (b) above: 10% weight  Point (c) above: 60% weight  Point (d) above: 30% weight

Each school will receive an award of R10 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.

Category 1b – technical high schools (one or more schools) (a) Consistency in number of Grade 12 candidates over a period of 3 years (b) An overall pass rate of at least 80% in 2014 (c) Percentage of candidates with Mathematics passes that is 40% and above (d) Aggregate pass rate of the technical subjects (Engineering Graphics and Design; Civil Technology; Electrical Technology and Mechanical Technology)

The ranking of technical high schools will be determined by calculating a weighted ranking index as follows:  Point (b) above: 10% weight  Point (c) above: 30% weight  Point (d) above: 60% weight

Each school will receive an award of R15 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.

Category 2 - Most improved schools

Category 2a: Most improved public schools Awards will be made to ten (10) schools that have shown the greatest improvement in pass rate over the period 2012 to 2014. The criteria also include consistency in the number of Grade 12 candidates over the 3 year period of 2012 to 2014.

Each school will receive an award of R15 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.

Category 2b: Greatest increase in the percentage of Bachelor’s passes Awards will be made to ten (10) schools that have shown the greatest increase in the percentage of candidates achieving access to Bachelor’s degree studies over the period 2012 to 2014. The criteria also include consistency in number of Grade 12 candidates over the 3 year period of 2012 to 2014.

Each school will receive an award of R15 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.
