When they met in the foyer, Hollingshead was carrying with him a quart jar of sugar paste into which he had infused a gram of Sandoz LSD. He had smeared this goo all over his own increasingly abstract conscious- ness and it still contained, by his own reckoning, 4,975 strong (200 mcg) doses of LSD. And the mouth of that jar became perhaps the most sig- nificant of the fumaroles from which the ‘60s blew forth. By Douglas Martin Dec. 23, 2019 Updated 4:52 a.m. ET Baba Ram Dass, who epitomized the 1960s of legend by popularizing psychedelic drugs with Timothy Leary, a fellow Harvard academic, before finding spiritual inspiration in India, died on Sunday at his home on Maui. He was 88. The death of Ram Dass, who was born Richard Alpert, was announced on his official Instagram account. Having returned from India as a bushy-bearded, barefoot, white-robed guru, Ram Dass became a peripatetic lecturer on New Age possibilities and a popular author of more than a dozen inspirational books. The first of his books, “Be Here Now” (1971), sold more than two million copies, and established him as an exuberant exponent of finding salvation through helping others. He started a foundation to combat blindness in India and Nepal, supported reforestation in Latin America, and developed health education programs for American Indians in South Dakota. He was particularly interested in the dying. He started a foundation to help people use death as a journey of spiritual awakening and spoke of establishing a self-help line, “Dial-a-Death,” for this purpose. Mystics and storytellers in South Asia have woven this deceptively simple observation into the Indic consciousness for millennia. Hindu scriptures warn that the true nature of endlessly changing phenomenal reality can be lost to us as we thrash about the crashing waves of life.Yet the Hindu emphasis on the phenomenal fact of impermanence is tempered by the promise of something substantial, enduring, and utterly liberating beyond the very flux of life, so often likened to a roiling ocean, the “ocean of samsara.”The phenomenal flux of mundane reality, staggering in its chaos and suffering, nonetheless motivates the journey to cross the “far shore,” the quintessential Indian metaphor for lib- eration. Among the premier rafts for this tumultuous crossing is the spiritual teacher, the guru, a term that, not incidentally, also means “heavy.”The word intimates the higher truth that there is something weighty, substantial, and enduring about life, a truth borne witness to by extraordinary spiritual teach- ers. Gurus assist in the journey to make the crossing—from the ocean of sam- sara to the ocean of awareness, from the changing flux of phenomenal reality to the far shore of liberation, from death to immortality.The far shore is the “site” for an ultimate ground that suffers no loss or change, understood vari- ously in Hinduism to be an enduring soul, consciousness, an unchanging Absolute or a deity with form.     Introduction From Wave to Soil Ann Gleig and Lola Williamson Some would argue that the term “Hinduism” is woefully inadequate because it enforces a false uniformity on such a wide variety of practices, philosophies, and beliefs. Yet this English word identifying religious pro‑ pensities of the Indian subcontinent, based on a much earlier Persian designation for the people who lived in the area of the Sindhu (Indus) River, has been in use since the late eighteenth century, and it is likely here to stay. Thus, we somewhat reluctantly continue to use the word “Hinduism.” In this book, however, we move to a new problem: how does one characterize this vast array of beliefs and practices we call Hinduism after it has been removed from its original Indian context and begun to mingle with Western worldviews and customs in America? Thomas Forsthoefel and Cynthia Humes employ the metaphor of waves in Gurus in America to chart the phenomenon of Hinduism in America.1 The first wave began with nineteenth‑century teachers such as Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), and the second wave is dated to those Indian gurus who came in the wake of the lifting of the Asian immigration act in 1965.2 This book might be viewed as a continuation of Gurus in America. It examines the challenges and changes that have occurred in response to the earlier two waves of Hindu gurus, as well as the legacies that have been carried forward from them. In one sense, then, the gurus appearing here consist of what might be thought of as a third wave of gurus.
