Rose Parade Floats, Not DIAD JLP members and their families volunteered in December with Fiesta Parade Floats in Irwindale, just east of Pasadena, to decorate floats through a Done in a Day activity. In addition to contributing to the process, the group learned all about the rose-covered structures and the hard work that goes into building them. Getting all of the materials ready to put on the floats is quite a task and takes hundreds of volunteers, who spent much of the day pressing dried corn husks and trimming little purple flowers in order to prepare them for use on several floats, including those representing Kaiser Permanente, the State of New Mexico, the City of Cerritos, and the Chinese- American Roundtable. Several other floats were also quite impressive, and volunteers said they couldn’t wait to see how beautiful they would be New Year’s Day!

3 Meet Local Members in Neighborhood Meetings After the fast-paced holiday season, the Junior League of Pasadena, Inc.’s intimate neighborhood meetings are After the fast-paced holiday season, the Junior League of Pasadena, Inc.’s intimate neighborhood meetings are a low-key way to regroup and reconnect. The ten meetings take place on January 26 and will be all about having fun, meeting local JLP members and teaming up on some important projects. Members often socialize with people they’ve met through committees, but they don’t always know their League neighbors right around the corner. At the meetings, Program Development and Support will seek feedback on future programs. League Training and Events will ask members what they want to see in a new Training Plan, a document that will be used next year to guide the types of training offered. Women who attend will also work together on a community project. There will be a meeting at headquarters, where members will help DIAD stuff gift bags for the Community Expo 10K. At the other meetings, members will assemble care packages for underserved children. A meeting sign-up sheet with more details will be e-mailed in early January. There will be daytime and evening meet- ings scattered throughout Pasadena, Altadena, Monrovia, San Marino and Glendale. For more information: Contact League Training and Events Chair Rita Birchard at [email protected].

Why You Should Love SPAC ABOUT SPAC The State Public Affairs Committee is a non-partisan education and advocacy organization that promotes voluntarism and legislation favorable to its member Junior Leagues. California SPAC is composed of two delegates from each of the 16 Junior Leagues in the state, representing over 12,000 voting women and nearly 100 community projects that are supported by approximately $2 million in project funds, grants, and gifts.

Each year, SPAC subcommittees review pending legislation in California, recommending whether action should be taken. Then the delegation votes to support, oppose, or watch legislation. SPAC is assisted in selecting project-related legislation by Sacramento Advocacy, an independent legislative consulting and lobbying firm in Sacramento. Each of SPAC’s four subcommittees have a position statement, which overlap with JLP’s focus areas: education, family support, health, and violence prevention. To get a sense of the important work that SPAC engages in, visit the SPAC forum on the JLP website for a list of bills the state SPAC delegation voted to support in April 2009. THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW CONTEST Every year SPAC has the opportunity to sponsor an original piece of legislation, and it is looking for your ideas! There is a reward for the best idea received by January 25. All entries will be reviewed by the JLP SPAC committee and will be evaluated via independent legislative criteria. Sign up and translate your ideas into law! Please submit your ideas via e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected].

Provisionals Off to a Great Year The Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. is excited to announce the 2009-2010 Provisional Class! After three open houses at JLP Headquarters, we are pleased to welcome 53 new members to the League – one of the largest and most enthusiastic classes ever! A special thank you to our Open House inspirational speakers including Jean Owen and Liza Palmer, who shared heart- warming stories of their League experiences that made us all want to join again. The Provisional year began with an Oktoberfest party held by the Floater Committee at Juliette Harrhy’s home in early October. This social kicked-off the new JLP Buddy Program. The Buddy Program involves pairing an active member with a Provisional member to help our Provisionals learn what the League has to offer and the many opportunities that exist. On October 22, the Provisionals and Actives were invited to take part in JLP 101 training at League Headquarters. The training included a brief history of the League, where our League is heading, and in-depth descriptions of all the JLP com- mittees. Continuing last year’s focus, the 2009-2010 Provisional Class will take part in Kids in the Kitchen, which is an association- wide initiative of Association of Junior League International (AJLI) designed to help communities address issues surrounding childhood obesity, nutrition, and teaching kids to live an active lifestyle. The date of the event will be announced this month. The Provisional Class is busy getting to know each other, learning more about the League, and gearing up for an amazing Kids in the Kitchen event. The Provisional Committee is very excited for the year ahead and our new batch of exceptional Provisionals.

Sustainer outing to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art The Sustainer Board is pleased to announce the Sustainer spring outing, a visit Tuesday, March 23 to LACMA for a guided tour of Renoir in the 20th Century. This ground-breaking exhibition examines Renoir’s role as a bridge between nineteenth century Impressionism and twentieth century Modernism. Guaranteed to be a sell out, Renoir in the 20th Century is the first monographic study devoted to the artist since the 1985 retrospective at the Galeries nationals du Grand Palais in Paris and the first one ever mounted by LACMA. Departing from a private home in Pasadena, we will travel by motor coach to LACMA. Our guided tour of the exhibi- tion will be followed by lunch at Pentimento, LACMA’s signature restaurant. Further details of upcoming Sustainer programs can be found in the winter/spring Sustainer calendar of events that was mailed earlier this month. If you need another copy please contact Vickie at JLP Headquarters.

The pro- fessionally timed race will have 14 race categories, awards for the top 3 finishers in each category, a great T-shirt for every participant and a race bag filled with goodies. A Kids’ K of just over a half mile will also be held just before the awards ceremony. Registration is $20 for the 10K and $10 for the Kids’ K and is open through the end of Jan. 29. For more information, visit: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1796648. As DIAD continues to develop community partnerships for the coming years, it is constantly looking for potential collaborators to increase opportunities for JLP members to provide direct service to the community. If you know of an organization that may be interested in participating, please contact Catherine Welch, DIAD Chair at welch. [email protected].
