10 | Fall 2014 The stigma of counselling has changed

As the weather begins to change and families get back into the swing of the school season, thoughts of our children and their needs become forefront in our minds. As parents we worry about the effects Aof bullying on our children and how we can help. The school system does much to help in controlling the bullying within the school but there is only so much they can do. The “Zero Tolerance for Bullying” that many schools have adopted is only the first step. Many high schools have resource workers and school counsellors that do everything within their means to help teens, but ultimately it is the parent’s responsibility to watch for the changes and to seek help for their child.

Good communication with your “children starts at a young age and shouldn’t stop as they get older.

This Nature is waiting... has worked for many teens as they will know who to contact when they need support and that relationship has already been established.

When looking for a counsellor, the number one thing to look for is someone you feel comfortable with. This is a special relationship as you, or your child, will need to connect with the person they are sharing their deepest feelings with. There are many options for counsellors, so do your homework and ask all the questions you need to. And remember, it is all about your comfort and confidence in who you choose.

14 | Fall 2014 Nature is waiting... Conserving Canada’s Wetlands

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) offers some very unique educational programs. Through Project Webfoot and Wetland Centres of Excellence, DUC reaches tens of thousands of youth every year about wetland conservation, and the value of wetlands.

Educating youth about wetlands and waterfowl is a big part of our mission at Ducks Unlimited Canada. To protect and sustain the health of precious natural resources like wetlands and watersheds, we need to make sure young people understand conservation concepts and practices.

Ducks Unlimited Canada carries a variety of curriculum resources and suggested activities to engage children. Visit ducks.ca/education or email: [email protected] for more information.

Bob Pringle, Saskatchewan Advocate for Children and Youth

The Advocate for Children and Youth is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. He leads a team of regional advocates, investigators, and administrative, research and communication professionals who work on behalf of the province’s young people. Who Can Call Anyone can call us if they have a concern about a child, youth or group of children and youth receiving services from a provincial ministry, agency, or publicly funded health entity. Children and youth are encouraged to call on their own behalf. How We Help We will listen to the concern, ask questions to clarify the situation, and review the steps already taken to resolve the issue. We might offer information or referrals to other agencies or ministries to help you to advocate for yourself and/or for the child or youth.

Advocacy by us on behalf of a child or youth is usually initiated at the request of the young person. We will work directly with them to negotiate a resolution to the matters raised with the service provider, caseworker and/or caregiver. We may also formally investigate the concern if required.

If a child or youth is unable to provide direction, we will work to ensure that he or she receives the services and quality of care they are entitled to by legislation and policy.
