On the surface, this head-to-head between Tapit, Gainesway's star son of Pulpit who was the top North American sire in 2014 and 2015, and Ashford Stud's Uncle Mo, a son of Indian Charlie, appears lopsided. Now in the middle of his 12th season, Tapit has sired 77 black-type winners, which include 48 graded black-type winners and six champions. His 2016 crop of 3-year-olds was produced from an exceptionally talented group of mares. They had an 11.32 Class Performance Index (CPI) and a 4.44 Comparable Index. The CPI indicates how good the mares were as runners, while the CI indicates their quality as producers. Tapit had the second-highest CPI among stallions standing for $100,000 or more and was tied with the second-highest CI with two other stallions in the same stud fee range. By comparison, Uncle Mo had the highest CI of his sire class with a 2.92 and the third-highest CPI at 3.38,

or Kentucky Derby week, we offer handicapping Ftips from Racing Maxims and Methods of Pittsburg Phil, edited and published by Edward W. Cole in 1908. "Pittsburg Phil" was actually George Smith, who was methodical in his gambling, never laying a bet unless he was certain that a horse was a substan- tial underlay. We could all learn from his wisdom: "A man who has not an opinion of his own and the ability to stick to it in the face of all kinds of arguments—and arguments include betting odds in a race—has not one chance in a million to beat the races for any length of time. "One who is susceptible to 'tips,' or what is known as paddock information, may bet along very well for awhile, but I have yet to find one who has stuck to this line who could show a bankroll of any dimensions. "Frequently, I have a half dozen 'tips' on the same race, and it was there that my own judgment stood me in good stead." BH KEENELAND LIBRARY George E. Smith, or 'Pittsburg Phil'
