Former Mayor Joseph Spataro cele brated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and officials during the South Brunswick Council meeting. Spataro was bom on Dec. 5, 1916, in South Brunswick, where he continues to re side today, according to a proclamation read during the meeting. As a young boy, Spataro attended South Brunswick schools during a time when no transportation was available, making it nec essary for him to walk three miles a day in all types of weather. He later served as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the 35th Special Battalion during World War II. After the war, he had a long professional career working for El DuPont and the Tile Council of America Research Center. Spataro was elected to the South Brunswick Township Committee for two terms from 1968-73. He served as mayor in 1970 and 1971. He also served as a mem ber of the South Brunswick Board of Health for four terms. Locally, Spataro was a member of the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad for North Brunswick Township High School Choral Director Vanessa Marino, far right, conducts the Vocal and Honors Ensemble in holiday more than 25 years, serving as treasurer for song as residents enjoy the annual WinterFest celebration at the North Brunswick Municipal Building on Dec. 5. 21 years. February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. • Notes & Queries
NOTES & QUERIES ON THE STATUS OF THE CHRISTMAS CRIB IN THE UNITED STATES Franz H. Mueller No typical American Chrismas crib exists, nor is there an ideal Italian, Austrian, French or .German creche type. America's ethnic pluralism has resulted in a variety of three-dimensional representations of the Nativity, each type reflecting, at least to a degree, the national origins of those who made and used them. A scientifically satis- factory account of the present state of Nativity art in the United States would require a greater expenditure of time, effort and money than this writer can afford. The readers will, therefore, have to content themselves with something of a quasi-geographic survey which offers repre- sentative examples from various parts of this country. We will start our survey in Maine where we find a collector, exhibitor, and distributor of Provencal santons, French-born Helene P. Carter of Topsham. She spends most of her time in the Provence, ferreting out and buying up good-quality santons. She has written an informative article called "What is a Santon?", and distributed it among interested audiences. Mrs. Carter speaks in schools. libraries, and museums on the origins, production tech- nique, and significance of those criche figures. The Criquet Shop, a store in Damariscotte, ME, sells a great variety of imported santons, largely those made by the santonnier (santon-maker) M. Carbonel. The shop's illus- trated catalogue with colored figures of some 122 figurines models, landscapes, etc., is fun to examine. In the New England of the Puritans, the celebration of Christmas uds abhorred as popish and was legally for- bidden.
