ecember 5 was a very special day in D South Brunswick. Former Mayor Joseph Spataro cele brated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and officials during the South Brunswick Council meeting. Spataro was bom on Dec. 5, 1916, in South Brunswick, where he continues to re side today, according to a proclamation read during the meeting. As a young boy, Spataro attended South Brunswick schools during a time when no transportation was available, making it nec essary for him to walk three miles a day in all types of weather. He later served as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the 35th Special Battalion during World War II. After the war, he had a long professional career working for El DuPont and the Tile Council of America Research Center. Spataro was elected to the South Brunswick Township Committee for two terms from 1968-73. He served as mayor in 1970 and 1971. He also served as a mem ber of the South Brunswick Board of Health for four terms. Locally, Spataro was a member of the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad for North Brunswick Township High School Choral Director Vanessa Marino, far right, conducts the Vocal and Honors Ensemble in holiday more than 25 years, serving as treasurer for song as residents enjoy the annual WinterFest celebration at the North Brunswick Municipal Building on Dec. 5. 21 years. We are thankful to the EDA for its support as we continue to grow and reach even more consumers.” To accommodate its remarkable growth, SLT Foods Inc. bought a 75,600-square- foot facility in South Brunswick earlier this year. The purchase was supported by a San tander Bank loan through the EDA’s Pre mier Lender Program, with a 32 percent EDA participation. The Premier Lender Program lowers the cost of borrowing for small businesses through the EDA’s alliance with more than two dozen banking partners. It offers low- cost financing with a quick turnaround time from approval to closing, while the EDA’s exposure by participating in or guarantee ing a portion of a loan reduces the lender’s risk, according to EDA. Businesses can use this financing for fixed assets, working cap ital or the refinancing of other bank debt. When SLT Foods was approved for its loan ip February of 2015, the company had nine employees in New Jersey. Its work force has now more than doubled to 20 em ployees, according to the EDA. “Family-owned and operated businesses like SLT Foods serve a niche within the community while at the same time create localized jobs,” EDA Chief Executive Of ficer Melissa Orsen said in a prepared state G o l f < ^ A c a d e m y ment.
