They have always supported me in whatever path I choose to follow, and for that I cannot thank them enough. v CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION This thesis involves the topic of modal metaphysics, and so deals with theories of possible worlds. There are many questions that one could ask about the nature of possible worlds and the possible objects they contain. However, the focus in my thesis will be on the question of what constitutes realism about modality. Generally speaking, modal realism entails the idea that possible worlds are real entities. It is common for an area of metaphysics to develop independently and for a system of logic appropriate to that area of metaphysics to arise afterword in response to the metaphysics. However, modal metaphysics developed in the latter half of the 20th century in response to Kripke’s semantics for modal logic. It was the role of possible worlds in Kripkean semantics that led philosophers to inquire about the nature of possible worlds. I will begin this introductory chapter with a brief discussion of modalality and Kripke’s semantics for modal logic. 1.1 Modality To understand the theories presented later in this thesis, we must first distinguish modal statements from non-modal statements. Consider the following statements: (1) The sky is blue (2) Ryan Comeau was born on 04/10/1988 1 2 (3) 2+2=4 (4) Ryan Comeau was born on 04/11/1988. (5) The sky is purple. The above statements all have truth-values that are determined by the way things actually are. In this case (1), (2), and (3) are true while (4) and (5) are false. But consider the following sentences: (6) The sky could have been red (i.e. it is possible for the sky to have been red). (7) Ryan Comeau could have been born on 04/11/1988. (8) Necessarily, 2+2=4. (9) Necessarily, nothing can be a square and a circle at the same time. (6)-(9) are modal claims. These are statements about what is possible or necessarily so. Notice that we must provide truth conditions for such statements in a different manner than we do for non-modal statements. With non-modal statements the statement is true or false in virtue of the way the world actually is. However, in the case of non-modal statements, nothing occurring in the actual world is sufficient to determine their truth- values. The first account developed to analyze modal statements is usually attributed to Gottfried Leibniz. His account of modal statements allows us to treat modal terms (e.g. ‘possibly’, ‘necessarily’, etc.) as quantifiers that range over what he called possible worlds. What actually is the case is what goes on here, in this world. This is one way for a world to be. Other worlds are other possibilities. Every way that a world could possibly 3 be is a way that some world is. Consequently, whenever x might be the case, there is a world where x is the case. Thus, modality can be conceived as quantification over possible worlds. The following two truth conditions stem from this idea: (a) ‘Necessarily P’ is true iff ‘P’ is true in all possible worlds. (b) ‘Possibly P’ is true iff ‘P’ is true in some (at least one) possible world. Generally speaking, modal logic works with two modal operators: the possibility operator ‘◊’ and the necessity operator ‘□’. Both attach to sentences to make sentences, or attach to open formulas to make open formulas. For example, we might write ‘◊ for some x, x is a swan and x is blue’ to mean that possibly some swan is blue. Or we might write ‘□ for all x, if x is a swan then x is a bird’ to mean necessarily all swans are birds. Further, the operator ‘◊’ can be defined from ‘□’ by letting ◊P = ~□~P and the operator ‘□’ can be defined from ‘◊’ by letting □P = ~◊~P. Modal logic is the logic of modal operators. In modal logic, the notion of a truth-value differs from that of the notion of a truth-value in other logics. There are world relative assessments of the truth-value of a sentence on modal logic. The idea is that ‘the grass is green’ is no longer simply true or false. It is true at world w (a world in which grass is green) and false at w* (a world in which grass is red). Similarly, the set of things that exist will vary from world to world (we need world relative domains), and the set of things that are, e.g., blue will vary from world to world (the extensions of predicates will be world relative). One question that is therefore important to settle is: what is the source of these intuitions? Correspondingly: what is their epistemological status? Philosophical discus- sion often proceeds as though these intuitions stem from insight into the nature of things—as though they are born of rational reflection and judicious discernment. If these intuitions do not have some such status, then their role in philosophical theorizing rapidly becomes suspect. We would not, for example, wish to place philosophical weight on intuitions that are in effect the unreflective articulation of inchoate cognitive biases. Developmental psychology has discovered a range of belief sets that emerge in the first few years of life, and which plausibly go beyond the evidence to which the child has had access in that time period. In such cases, it is reasonable to suppose that the belief sets do not derive solely from the child’s rational reflection on her evidence, but rather show something about the way human beings are fundamentally disposed to see the world. (In some cases, the deep-seated dispositions are also shared with non-human animals.) There are many explanations of why we may be fundamentally disposed to see the world in a particular way, only one of which is that metaphysically or scientifically speaking, the world actually is that way.

    Stalnaker on Sleeping Beauty Brian Weatherson The Sleeping Beauty puzzle provides a nice illustration of the approach to self-lo- cating belief defended by Robert Stalnaker in Our Knowledge of the Internal World (Stalnaker, 2008), as well as a test of the utility of that method. The setup of the Sleeping Beauty puzzle is by now fairly familiar. On Sunday Sleeping Beauty is told the rules of the game, and a (known to be) fair coin is flipped. On Monday, Sleeping Beauty is woken, and then put back to sleep. If, and only if, the coin landed tails, she is woken again on Tuesday after having her memory of the Monday awakening erased.1 On Wednesday she is woken again and the game ends. There are a few ques- tions we can ask about Beauty’s attitudes as the game progresses. We’d like to know what her credence that the coin landed heads should be (a) Before she goes to sleep Sunday; (b) When she wakes on Monday; (c) When she wakes on Tuesday; and (d) When she wakes on Wednesday? Standard treatments of the Sleeping Beauty puzzle ignore (d), run together (b) and (c) into one (somewhat ill-formed) question, and then divide theorists into ‘halfers’ or ‘thirders’ depending on how they answer it. Following Stalnaker, I’m going to focus on (b) here, though I’ll have a little to say about (c) and (d) as well. I’ll be following 1 orthodoxy in taking 2 to be the clear answer to (a), and in taking the correct answers to (b) and (c) to be independent of how the coin lands, though I’ll briefly question that assumption at the end.

    4 Semantical Paradox* Tyler Burge Frege remarked that the goal of all sciences is truth, but that it falls to logic to discern the laws of truth. Perceiving that the task of determining these laws went beyond Frege’s conception of it, Tarski enlarged the jurisdiction of logic, establishing semantics as truth’s lawyer.1 At the core of Tarski’s theory of truth and validity was a diagnosis of the Liar paradox according to which natural language was hopelessly infected with contradiction. Tarski construed himself as treating the disease by replacing ordinary discourse with a sanitized, artificial construction. But those interested in natural language have been dissatisfied with this medication. The best ground for dis­ satisfaction is that the notion of a natural language’s harboring contradictions is based on an illegitimate assimilation of natural language to a semantical system. According to that assimilation, part of the nature of a “language” is a set of postulates that purport to be true by virtue of their meaning or are at least partially constitutive of that “language”. Tarski thought that he had identified just such postulates in natural language as spawning inconsistency. But postulates are contained in theories that are promoted by people. Usually, this theory is presented in an informal manner. In this thesis, I take first steps in formalizing it, and use the formalization to present some considerations in favor of two-dimensional semantics. To do so, I define a semantics for a propositional modal logic with operators for the modalities of necessity, actuality, and apriority that captures the relevant ideas of two-dimensional semantics. I use this to show that some criticisms of two- dimensional semantics that claim that the theory is incoherent are not justified. I also axiomatize the logic, and compare it to the most important proposals in the literature that define similar logics. To indicate that two-dimensional semantics is a plausible semantic theory, I give an argument that shows that all theorems of the logic can be philosophically justified independently of two-dimensional semantics. There is no agreement even on so basic a matter as where he falls in the standard scheme of classifying such theories: to Copleston, he is a resemblance-nominalist1; to Armstrong, a “concept nominalist”2; to Edwards and Spade, “almost as strong a realist as Duns Scotus”3; to Gracia, Pannier, and Sullivan, neither realist nor nominalist4; to Hamlyn, the Middle Ages’ “prime exponent of realism,” although his theory adds elements of nominalism and “conceptualism”5; to Wolterstorff, just inconsistent.6 I now set out Aquinas’ view and try to answer the vexed question of how to classify it. Part of the confusion here is terminological. As emerges below, Thomas believed in “tropes” of “lowest” (infima) species of accidents and (I argue) substances.7 Many now class trope theories as a form of nominalism,8 while 1. F. C.     PUTNAM’S THEORY OF NATURAL KINDS AND THEIR NAMES IS NOT THE SAME AS KRIPKE’S IAN HACKING Collège de France Abstract Philosophers have been referring to the “Kripke–Putnam” theory of natural- kind terms for over 30 years. Although there is one common starting point, the two philosophers began with different motivations and presuppositions, and developed in different ways. Putnam’s publications on the topic evolved over the decades, certainly clarifying and probably modifying his analysis, while Kripke published nothing after 1980. The result is two very different theories about natural kinds and their names. Both accept that the meaning of a natural- kind term is not given by a description or defining properties, but is specified by its referents. From then on, Putnam rejected even the label, causal theory of reference, preferring to say historical, or collective. He called his own approach indexical. His account of substance identity stops short a number of objections that were later raised, such as what is called the qua problem. He came to reject the thought that water is necessarily H2O, and to denounce the idea of metaphysical necessity that goes beyond physical necessity. Essences never had a role in his analysis; there is no sense in which he was an essentialist. He thought of hidden structures as the usual determinant of natural kinds, but always insisted that what counts as a natural kind is relative to interests. “Natural kind” itself is itself an importantly theoretical concept, he argued. The paper also notes that Putnam says a great deal about what natural kinds are, while Kripke did not.

It claims, contrary to previous theorizing, that they have a common syntax and semantics, roughly that which is currently associated by philosophers and linguists with definite descriptions as construed in the tradition of Frege. As well as advancing this proposal, I hope to achieve at least one other aim, that of urging linguists and philosophers dealing with pronoun interpretation, in particular donkey anaphora, to consider a wider range of theories at all times than is sometimes done at present. I am thinking particularly of the gulf that seems to have emerged between those who practice some version of dynamic semantics (including DRT) and those who eschew this approach and claim that the semantics of donkey pronouns crucially involves definite descriptions (if they consider donkey anaphora at all). In my opinion there is too little work directly comparing the claims of these two schools (for that is what they amount to) and testing them against the data in the way that any two rival theories might be tested. (Irene Heim’s 1990 article in Linguistics and Philosophy does this, and largely inspired my own project, but I know of no other attempts.) I have tried to remedy that in this book. I ultimately come down on the side of definite descriptions and against dynamic semantics; but that preference is really of secondary importance beside the attempt at a systematic comparative project.
