24.6 Men’s Outdoor Track BECKETT FAMILY COMPLEX

The Beckett Family Track and Field Complex was constructed in the late 1990s with a gift from the late Clarence B. Beckett, a 1923 graduate who contributed nearly $500,000. to the project. Mr. Beckett was a member of the track team during his undergraduate days and retained a high degree of fondness for his alma mater and the football and track programs during his lifetime. The project included a new synthetic running surface (8 lanes), three long and triple jump areas, two shot put areas, two javelin runways, two hammer and discus cages, a hexagonal high jump area, a steeplechase pit, and four pole vault areas. The complex surrounds the Alfond Stadium football and field hockey playing facilities.

The Complex has hosted many major meets during the past decade. In 1998, it attracted the U. S. Track and Field Masters National Championship that drew top master athletes from around the world. That event came to Beckett Complex again in 2002 and 2007. In 1999, it was the site of the men’s New England intercollegiate championship meet and in 2003 it hosted the America East championships.

Other events held at Beckett Complex have included the USA Region I Junior Olympics, Special Olympics, USATF Maine Youth Championships, the Maine USATF Quebec-Atlantic Open Championship and the USA Junior National Racewalk Championship. A number of high school meets have been held there as well.

Jim Ballinger, head coach of Maine track at the time of the building of the Complex, noted, “what we envisioned was a premier facility in the Northeast that would attract championship meets for all levels of competition. There is no doubt that he was correct in his forecast.

24.14 Men’s Outdoor Track 1935 — THE TRADITION CONTINUES Maine had few peers in New England college track circles during the mid 1930s. Back, l-r, Faculty Mgr. of Athletics Ted Curtis, George Clarke, Vincent Hathorn, Myron Collette, Richard Ireland, George Frame, Dana Sidelinger, Harold Webb, Don Huff, John Murray, Bob DeWick, and Tr. Stan Wallace. Absent: Alton Bell, George Hitchings, Bill Hunnewell, Rod Mullaney, and Howard Stagg.

1947 — HOMELESS CHAMPIONS Maine’s 1947 outdoor track team was dubbed the “homeless champions” as the result of a new football stadium and running track that was under construction during the team’s spring season. Thus, most practices were confined to the fieldhouse. The Bears still had a good season, winning the State Meet and scoring well at the New England Championships, led by Earle Vickery, New England javelin champion. Front row, l-r, Sam Silsby, Charles Chapman, Wally Brown, Elmer Folsom, Bob Emerson, Blaine Beal, Carroll Taylor, Arnie Davis, and Doug Morton. Second row, l-r, Will Cote, Ken Vennett, Foster Jacobs, John Collins, George Marsanskis, Alton Sproul, George Higgins, Dick Dow, Jim Davee, and Coach Chet Jenkins. Third row, l-r, Gene O’Brien, Bob Hanson, Bill Rogers, Lew Schlotterback, Willis Libby, Sumner Robinson, Charles Rowley, and Morton Bartlett. Back row, l-r, Napoleon Spenard, Everett Gerrish, Jim Goodwin, Ray Peppard, Dick Bleakney, Joe Parkhurst, and Earle Clifford.

1914 MAINE TEAM The sport of men’s outdoor track was in its 21st year at Orono in 1914 and all agreed it was the best team in the University’s history at the time. The Maine men won the state championship and finished second in the New England championship meet. Many of Maine’s finest athletes of the day ( several are in the UM Hall of Fame) were members of the team. Charles Rice, who died a hero’s death in World War I and whose name is etched on the highest award still presented annually by the University’s ROTC’s unit, won the 100 and 220 yard dashes in the New England meet, both in record times (10.0 and 22.0). Guy Palmer and Harold Bailey also were New England champions in the high jump and hammer throw, respectively. Front row, l-r, Wilson Morse, Paul Gerrish, Roger Bell, Capt. Wayland Towner, Arthur St. Onge, Ralph Pierce, and Frank Preti. Second row, l-r, Frank “Pat” French, Leon MacLaughlin, Jim Gulliver, Charles Ruffner, Philip Thomas, Harry Williams, and Guy Palmer. Third row, l-r, Ed Dempsey, Jim Smiley, Harold Bailey, Charles Rice, Herb Skolfield, and George Ashworth. Back row, l-r, Coach Art Smith, Herb McCobb, and Mgr. Paul Warren.

A SPECIAL DAY Saturday, May 24, 1958, was an historic day in the history of men’s outdoor track at Maine. The New England Association held its annual championship meet at Orono on that date (for the first time in the history of the Association) in recognition of contributions to the sport by Faculty Manager of Athletics Ted Curtis during his 36-year career in Orono. Coach Ed Styrna and Mr. Curtis are shown here looking over some new implements purchased for the meet. The meet drew a crowd of more than 2,000 to Alumni Field and Maine’s team did itself proud, finishing second. Phil Haskell (100), Dale Bessey (880) and Bill Schroeder (pole vault) were individual champions. Several meet and University records were broken under ideal weather conditions.

24.26 Men’s Outdoor Track YEAR-BY-YEAR MEET RESULTS Excluding conference meets, non-scoring meets and meets with partial entries. There were no dual meets before 1906. Team scores shown and win-loss records based on meets with five or less teams.

I.C.A.A.A.A. The Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association of America, more commonly referred to as the IC4A, has been conducting an outdoor track and field championship for men for nearly a century. Until the NCAA established a national championship meet in men’s outdoor track following World War II, the IC4A event was regarded as the nation’s most prestigious event and winning teams and individuals were regarded as national champions. A number of Maine’s top trackmen have competed in this event, with individual titles earned on eight occasions since 1915.

Men’s Outdoor Track 24.31 MAINE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Maine State Series began conducting a men’s outdoor track championship in 1895. Members were Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby Colleges and the U. of Maine. The meet was not held in 1917 and 1918 (WW I), 1934 (disagreements among members, although directors voted to award the title to Bowdoin by default), and 1944 and 1945 (WWII). The conference disbanded after the 1974 meet, but the meet continued until 1993 under the auspices of the head coaches. Altogether, a total of 94 meets were conducted, making the event one of the most often held championships in U.S. college track and field history. Scores of each of the events are listed below. (Note: Maine did not compete in the 1980 meet due to scheduling difficulties; thus the results of that meet are not included in this listing.)

ALTON BELL Any listing of the best all-around athletes in UM history must include Alton Bell. He lettered in four sports: baseball, indoor track, outdoor track, and riflery. Between his freshman year (1933–34) and senior year (1936–37), he was a member of both the baseball and outdoor track teams simultaneously, serving as captain of both in the spring of 1937. He was New England champion in the javelin in 1936 and 1937 and national champion in the event in 1936. In baseball, during his three varsity seasons, he batted .333, .395, and .479. His average for the three seasons was .406, one of, if not the best in UM baseball history. This photograph was taken of Bell (left) and his three nearest competitors, Paul King of Penn and Don Houpt of Cornell, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia following his winning of the national championship in the javelin throw with a toss of 197' 8 1/4" in 1936.
