V době “zlaté éry letectví“ se proslavil mnoha rychlostnímí dálkovými rekordy. Vojenskou verzí byl Nieuport IVM (Militaire), postavený pro konkurs francouzské armády. Nieuport v konkursu zvítězil a byl sériově stavěn pro vznikající letecké síly Francie,Velké Británie, v licenci byl stavěn v Itálii a v carském Rusku. Již v říjnu 1 911 nasadila Italská armáda jeden Nieuport v ltalsko-Turecké válce o Libyi jako průzkumný. Pilotem byl kap. Moizo. Šlo o první bojové použití letadla v dějinách lidstva. V carském Rusku 8. září 1913 provedl poručík P. N. Něstěrov, letící na Nieuportu IV, jako první pilot na světě looping. Francouzské Nieuporty sezúčastnilyještě prvních bojù I. svět. války.
