The Marital Arms of Charles Duncombe, the 1st Baron Feversham and Lady Charlotte Legge

The arms as engraved upon this George IV English Sterling Silver Footed Salver by Paul Storr hallmarked London 1827 are those of Duncombe, Baron Feversham impaling Legge. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing on the dexter (the heraldic right on the left as you view the piece) the arms of the husband and on the sinister (the heraldic left on the right as you view it) the arms of the wife. They may be blazoned as follows:

Arms:

(on the dexter) Per chevron engrailed gules and argent three talbot’s heads erased counterchanged (for Duncombe)

(on the sinister) Azure a stag’s head cabossed argent (for Legge)

The arms are ensigned with a baron’s coronet.

Supporters: (dexter) A horse of a dark-grey colour gutty-d’or ducally gorged of the last

(sinister) A lion argent powdered with fleur-de-lys sable his head adorned with a plume of six feathers argent and azure out of a ducal coronet or

Motto: Deo regi patriæ [To God, my king and my country]

These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Charles Duncombe, the 1st Baron Feversham (born 5th December 1764 died 16th July 1841) and Lady Charlotte Legge (died 5th November 1848). Charles and Charlotte were married on the 24th September 1795 at the Parish Church of All Saints, West Bromwich in the County of Staffordshire. Charles was the eldest son of Charles Slingsby Duncombe, of and Isabel Soulby, daughter of Robert Soulby, whilst Charlotte was the only daughter of William Legge, the 2nd Earl of Dartmouth and Frances Catherine Nicoll, only daughter of Sir Charles Gounter Nicoll. Charles was created Baron Feversham, of Duncombe Park in the County of within the Peerage of the United Kingdom on the 14th July 1826.
