Sarajevo Heart of Europe The First European WWI commemoration On and around June 28th 2014 Press kit Press relations: Heymann, Renoult Associées Sarah Heymann, Lucie Cazassus, Elodia Ferreira and Abigail Nogues International press: [email protected] National and regional press: [email protected] Tel: +33(0)144 617 676 www.heymann-renoult.com Editorial The idea took form in the spring of 2011. Sarajevo had to be the place, June 28th 2014 the date, for the start of the European commemorations for the centenary of the First World War. Driven by this conviction, we, together with the producer Fabienne Servan- Schreiber, set off for Sarajevo. Once there, we very soon met with some of our companions in this extraordinary adventure: the then mayor of Sarajevo, Alija Behmen, to whom we would like to pay tribute, Francis Bueb and the group of people at the Centre André Malraux, brothers to the city in its darkest hours, the Sarajevo Film Festival and the Sarajevo Jazz Fest, both embody Sarajevo’s cultural excellence. The French Ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Roland Gilles, convinced Europe to join us on this adventure. Sarajevo had long aspired to the honor of being European Capital of Culture. The year of commemoration of the outset of the First World War fulfilled this ambition, at last. Peter Sorensen, the special representative of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Pierre Mirel, then director of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Enlargement, immediately believed in the project. Sarajevo may not be European Capital of Culture in 2014, but for a few weeks around the symbolic date of June 28th it will be the “Heart of Europe”.

These trends owe their popularity to, among others, favorable climatic conditions, interesting tourist attraction and folklore. One of the countries that attracts a large number of tourists is North Macedonia. The local population is increasingly taking actions to attract the attention of foreigners, also by means of promoting national cuisine. Macedonian dishes perfectly reflect the spirit of the Balkans and fresh fruit and vegetables testify to the high quality of food products. Data pertaining to the popularity of Macedonian cuisine among tourists and locals were collected using a survey. The group of respondents includes 130 visi- tors and 31 residents of North Macedonia. The results of the study showed that the local dishes are still identified with the entire Balkan area and their origin is often confused. Traditional Macedonian dishes, however, thanks to good promotion and advertising have the potential to become a strong factor attracting foreign tourists. Keywords: North Macedonia, food tourism, traditional dishes, culinary festivals 1.
