NASSALA (Not-Actually-Secret Society of Awesome Library Advisors) Hello, Awesome Library Advisor! It’s time for our Early Winter round of book selections, and I need your help. This packet is a list of LOTS of books I’m considering for our next library purchase. For each book it has a picture of the cover and a short description of the book. (If you’d like to see this packet in color, for the book covers, it is online at www.westada.org/Page/52970.) Most of these are either standalone books (not in a series) or the first book in a new series. The first group of books (pages 2-7) are marketed as Middle School meaning that they’re written with a reader in mind who is in grades 5-7 (ish). The second group of books (pages 8-13) are marketed as YA or Older Teen, or maybe just have a higher reading level. Some of these books may have more mature content in them or may focus on main characters who are in high school or college. The third group of books (pages 14-19) are Graphic Novels and the fourth group of books (pages 20-23) are Nonfiction. What do you think? Follow the instructions below to tell me! -Mrs. Baker 1. Skim/read through the packet. You can skip sections that don’t interest you. 2. If a book looks good to you, and you think you’d like to read it, “vote for it” by putting a round sticker on that book (or its description). A sheet of round stickers is in this envelope for you; if you need more, just ask. 3. If a book looks AMAZING to you, and you REALLY want to read it, draw a star or smiley face on the round sticker. (Use pen, or push hard with your pencil, so I can see your mark.) This will give that book double votes, and if we get it I will put you at the front of the line to get to read it first. 4. You can also write on these pages in the margins if you have questions or want to tell me something. If something looks horrible, tell me (write it on the packet). I won’t be offended— it’s good for me to know! 5. On the blank page on the back of this packet, you can write me notes or suggest other books that you think we ought to have. If there is a series that the library already has, but we’re missing part of it, let me know! 6. When you’re done, turn in this entire packet to Mrs. Baker. I would like to get them back by next Wednesday, December 6, if possible. 7. And yes, if your friends want a packet but didn’t sign up, they can still be in NASSALA! Just send them to the library to get on the list and get their own packet and stickers. :) 8. Have fun! I hope you find some interesting things in here and can help me decide what to get! 1 Middle School (5-7 level) Dirty. Lazy. Good-for-nothing. Jay Thacker is used to being called names because his dad is half Navajo. But he gets a chance at a new life and a new identity when he and his mom move to the small town of Delta, Utah, to live with Jay’s grandfather. In Delta, Jay can convince everyone, and maybe even himself, that his dad—who is missing in ac- tion as he fights in WWII—is really a POW and military hero, and not gone forever. As the summer wears on and Jay finds himself growing up a little faster than he expected, he learns to look at some truths that had previously been impossible to face. Truths about his father; about Ken, his new friend from the Japanese internment camp nearby; and about himself, too. (256 pages.) Seventh grader Jeremy Miner has a girl problem. Or, more accurately, a girls problem. 475 of them to be exact. That’s how many girls attend his school, St. Edith’s Academy. Jeremy is the only boy left after the school’s brief ex- periment in co-education. And he needs to get out. But his mother—a teacher at the school—won’t let him transfer, so Jeremy takes matters into his own hands: he’s going to get expelled. Together with his best friend Claudia, Jeremy unleashes a series of hilarious pranks in hopes that he’ll get kicked out with minimal damage to his permanent record. But when his stunts start to backfire, Jeremy has to decide how far he’s willing to go and whom he’s willing to knock down to get out the door. (272 pages) A little pig in a big city leads to lots of trouble! Josie Shilling’s family is too big, their cramped city house is too small, and she feels like no one’s ever on her side. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, her older brother, Tom, brings home a pink, squirmy bundle wrapped in an old football jersey—a piglet he rescued from a nearby farm. Her name is Hamlet. The minute Josie holds Hamlet, she feels an instant connection. But there’s no room for Hamlet in the crowded Shilling household. And whoever heard of keep- ing a pig in the city? So it’s up to Josie to find her a forever home. (336 pages) Top Three Reasons Camp Minnehaha is The Worst 1. The spiders (wayyyy too many legs) 2. King Arthur (a rampaging goat intent on my destruction) 3. Victoria a.k.a The Diva (an evil cabin mate obsessed with French beauty products and my humiliation) Chloe McCorkle knew a summer camp where you had to learn a career was a bad idea. She tried to tell her parents, but they just had to go on vacation to Alaska and ship her off for two weeks. It's not ideal, but she's going to try to make the best of it. She might even learn some skills that will help her make money for the new bike she's been eyeing. But Chloe quickly discovers there's only one area at which she excels; she manages to get more demerits than anyone else in camp... (240 pages) In this book, which blends fascinating real history with an action-packed and hilarious adventure, four very different kids are picked by a mysterious billionaire to travel through time and photograph some of history's most important events. This time, the four friends are headed to 1863 to catch Abraham Lincoln delivering his famous Gettysburg Address. (256 pages) 2 It’s a new kind of book for Babymouse! Fans of Dork Diaries, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and James Patterson’s Middle School books, this is going to be epic... For Babymouse, middle school is like a monster movie. You can never be sure who’s a friend and who’s an enemy, and the halls are filled with mean-girl zombies. Instead of brains, the zombies hunger for stuff—the perfect wedge sandals or the right shade of sparkly lip gloss—and they expect everyone to be just like them. But Babymouse doesn’t want to fit in—she wants to stand out! So she joins the film club to write and direct a sweeping cinematic epic. Will making the film of her dreams turn into a nightmare? (208 pages; illustrated) It’s 1558, and warlords across Japan are battling for territory and control. Into this setting, award-winning au- thor Tanya Lloyd Kyi weaves the stories of three people: Mochizuki Chiyome, a young woman determined to become a ninja whose plans are thwarted by an arranged marriage; Takeda Shingen (The Tiger), a fierce war- lord seeking a new weapon to outsmart his enemies; and Aki, an orphaned tavern girl whose destiny is changed by a mysterious woman. As their stories intersect, the three characters become key players in an elaborate net- work of undercover female ninjas who will eventually shift the balance of power in Japan. Based on the true story of Mochizuki Chiyome and her all-female spy network, Shadow Warrior takes readers on a journey through feudal Japan, from villages to castles to battlefields. Stunning illustrations by Celia Krampien, inter- spersed with archival Japanese art, vividly depict the rigors of ninja training, the struggles of village life, the in- tensity of battle, and the thrill of accomplishing a secret mission.
