Produced by Bomi Moon’s HB Entertainment and Joonsuh Park of JTBC’s Dramahouse, the surprise hit makes Sky Castle the most successful drama in seven-year-old domestic cable/pay broad- caster JTBC’s history. Ratings are even higher in Seoul. The 5 Jan episode hit 17.254%. The 20-episode satire tracks the materialistic desires of upper- class parents in Korea, and their relentless ambitions for their children in Korea’s competitive education system. The 70-min- ute episodes are set in a luxurious residential development called Sky Castle, populated by doctors and law professors. Sky Castle tops a meteoric rise for JTBC against free-TV be- hemoths KBC, MBC and SBS, although 2018 dramas did not match the performance of 2017’s. 2017 drama The Lady in Dignity, which has been sold to Chi- na as a scripted format, peaked at just above 12.692% (Seoul), LOUDER. In third spot on the WELCOME TO THE BOYS’ CLUB all time nationwide ratings charts is Strong Girl Bong-soon, also from 2017, with a peak rating of 10.261% (Seoul). 2018 Friday/Saturday dramas were Misty (peak 8.938%, We have moved! In comparison, KBS’s 2017 Confession Couple (aka Go Back all3mediainternational.com Couple), based on a Naver webtoon, peaked at 7.6% (Seoul) on KBS’s Friday/Saturday schedules. KBS’ Strongest Delivery Man (August/Sept 2017), peaked at 8% (Seoul), while Hit the Top (June/July 2017) peaked at 6% in (Seoul). The allegations include a rape in 2017. The names of the staffers have not been confirmed. No police report has been made so far, and the female accuser – a former radio station employee – remains unidentified. The anonymous email detailing rape and sexual harassment accused BFM management of covering up her com- plaint “to protect their name and the people influential in the station”, and said the station’s “predatory culture” was widespread. The accuser also said management had done nothing to protect the 2017 rape victim “and simply fired the man”. • Indian Entertainment and Media Outlook 2010 2 Indian Entertainment and Media Outlook 2010 Message
Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 2 Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 Message To our clients and friends both in and beyond the entertainment and media industry : Welcome to the 2010 edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Indian Entertainment and Media (E&M) Outlook, covering the forecast period of 2010–2014. Our forecasts and analysis for this edition focus on eight major E&M industry segments and one emerging segment. Each segment details out the key trends observed and challenges faced apart from providing the prospects for the segment. In the industry overview section, we have highlighted the key theme observed during 2009 and what we perceive as future trends in the coming years. We have a chapter on the tax and regulatory impact on the various E&M segments and for the very first time we have included a chapter on how technology can be leveraged in the E&M industry. In 2009, the economy severely impacted the world, translating into steep declines in advertisement as well as consumer spending. India though impacted, did manage to show growth with increased consumer spending as well as innovative action on the part of the industry. Against this backdrop, across the world, except certain markets, speed of digital spending increased due to changing consumer behavior as well as technology available to deliver the same. In India, while the spend on digital media is likely to grow, it is unlikely that it will dominate in the forecast period. This is largely due to the relative unavailability as well as unaffordability of the broadband and mobile infrastructure.
