It lies between latitude 1175850 N and longitude 367780 E in the area of Bajaur Agency. The objective of this research work was to find out the ichtyodiversity of Talai dam bajaur agency, kpk, Pakistan. During the study seven species, L. rohita, H. molitrix, Cirrhinus mrigala, T. Khudree, C. Catla, C. idella, C. auratus were identified up to species level. From the obtained results it may be concluded that Talai dam bajaur agency terms and condition are suitable for the survival of cyprinidae species. Key words: Talai Dam Bajaur Agency Biodiversity Fishes INTRODUCTION very important phenomenon because it gives us idea about the life inside the water. That’s way studying the Bajaur Agency’s geographical area is 1,290 km2 and ichthyodiversity of an area is the first effort to understand its current population is 0.942 million. Population density the aquatic ecosystem of the area. Fishes live in almost is 730 persons per km2 being the highest of other every type of aquatic environment, ranging from Antarctic Agencies. Population growth rate is 4.33% per annum. water to the hot springs [3]. In Talai The fishes were collected from Talai dam during the dam about seven species L. rohita, H. molitrix, Cirrhinus period of July 2014 to June 2015 with the help of Cast mrigala, T. Khudree, C. In Pakistan, there are about thirty economically were preserved in 5% formalin and brought to the important commercially fish species have been recorded laboratory for identification. The identification of fishes and among them, two species like Labeo rohita, was done with the help of standard taxonomic references Cirrhinus mrigala were reported in Talai dam bajaur [6-9]. agency. Zaigham et al. [10] worked on bajaur agency stream fishes and total of sixteen (16) fish species were RESULTS AND DISCUSSION identified belonging to 4 orders, 5 families and 12 genera. Family Cyprinidae was the richest family represented by Studying fish fauna of an area is a very important nine species viz, Puntius ticto, Puntius conchonius, task as it provides base line information about the species Barilius modestus, Barilius pakistanicus, Barilius vagra, used for human consumption. Mostly people depend only Crossocheilus diplocheilus, Salmophasia punjabensis, on a few important species as food; hence studies could Carassius auratus and Schizothorax plagiostomus. identify actual food and market potential of an area or a Family Nemacheilidae was represented by three species water body. This type of study also provides information Triplophysa naziri, Schistura alepidota and Naemacheilus about the availability, abundance, population dynamics pakistanicus whereas two species Channa gachua and and conservation status of fish species of an area. Channa punctatus of Family Channidae were also Strategies can be developed on the basis of these studies identified. Family Mastacembelidae and Sisoridae were to conserve and to culture a species from certain represented by a single specie viz, Mastacembelus environment. For the first time a study was conducted on armatus and Glyptothorax punjabensis respectively. 1579 World Appl. Sci.
