WEST TORRENS DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB RECORDS (included are the records for the Hindmarsh C.C. established in 1856-57 season, the former name of the present Club) INTRODUCTION These records have been compiled to replace those destroyed during the 1950s and are designed to satisfy the interest of cricket historians, former players and supporters of the Club. They can also be used to assist current players set new seasonal goals and assess their performances against those of the past. Included are performances registered during World Wars One and Two in what is sometimes referred to as the Unofficial SACA competition. As hostilities worsened in 1915 the SACA, as part of austerity measures, wanted to abandon District Cricket altogether. However a counter argument was put by players and Clubs that young men preparing to go to war, home on leave or involved in essential services needed to keep fit. A compromise was reached whereby the SACA organised an official program of matches for which points would be allocated but no finals were played and no official Premierships awarded nor awards granted. A similar situation occurred during World War Two. Unfortunately these performances were not acknowledged in the Club’s history From the Circus to the Pughole. The general consensus of current cricket historians is that these matches should be counted as official Club matches as they were part of a program organised by the SACA. There was no program of District matches during 1916-17, 1917-18 and 1942-43. The statistics have been compiled from newspapers such as The Register, The Observer, The Advertiser and the Sunday Mail. All available Annual Reports of the WTDCC have been researched as have been any available scorebooks. I am indebted to Geoff Sando, Cricket Historian and Statistician, for his invaluable help in assisting and advising me in the compilation of these records. Records from B grade down to the lower grades may be incomplete owing to the fact that full scoreboards of B grade matches were not all published prior to World War Two and in an abbreviated form after World War Two. C, D and Junior grade scores were only ever published in an abbreviated form or not at all. Consequently there may be omissions in these grades particularly in respect to partnerships. Partnerships in lower senior grades are listed as large rather than as records. Where a performance is recorded in a match played on dates which included more than one month, only the month of the first day of the match is listed e.g. a match played on 30 October and 6 November is recorded simply as October.
