Wow Review V10 I1
WOW Review: Volume IX, Issue 4 Summer 2017 Sunny Written and illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto Translated by Michael Arias VIZ Media LLC, 2011, 224pp. ISBN: 1421555255 Sunny is Taiyo Matsumoto’s autobiographical youth manga, set in rural 1970s' Japan. The story portrays the everyday life of fos- ter children, ranging from toddlers to teens, who live in a foster home called the "Star Kid Home." The children come from dif- ferent problematic situations, including broken homes and dys- functional families. Sunny 1200, a broken down yellow Nissan sitting in the back yard, is an important shared space for them. Within the car and their imaginations, they can become anyone and go anywhere, such as outer space, fantasy lands, or simply home. They share concerns and worries, and sometimes smoke and read forbidden porn magazines in secret. Sunny consists of six chapters. Each chapter concentrates on one child’s life story or tells a tale from his or her perspective. The stories are low-key without much dynamic action, but are never boring. As readers, we empathize with the children’s feelings of abandonment, loneliness, distress, desperation for familial love, strengths, and sensitivities. These are de- lineated in black-and-white details, and occasionally in colored, washy ink illustrations. Readers are not told why Haruo, one of the children, always carries Nivea cream, but he is shown smelling the cream when he misses his mother and shares the pain of loneliness with others by having them smell it. There is no narrative to describe why Kenji comes to the foster home, but he is shown visiting his alcoholic father and taking care of him. -

Talking Like a Shōnen Hero: Masculinity in Post-Bubble Era
Talking like a Shōnen Hero: Masculinity in Post-Bubble Era Japan through the Lens of Boku and Ore Hannah E. Dahlberg-Dodd The Ohio State University Abstract Comics (manga) and their animated counterparts (anime) are ubiquitous in Japanese popular culture, but rarely is the language used within them the subject of linguistic inquiry. This study aims to address part of this gap by analyzing nearly 40 years’ worth of shōnen anime, which is targeted predominately at adolescent boys. In the early- and mid-20th century, male protagonists saw a shift in first-person pronoun usage. Pre-war, protagonists used boku, but beginning with the post-war Economic Miracle, shōnen protagonists used ore, a change that reflected a shift in hegemonic masculinity to the salaryman model. This study illustrates that a similar change can be seen in the late-20th century. With the economic downturn, salaryman masculinity began to be questioned, though did not completely lose its hegemonic status. This is reflected in shōnen works as a reintroduction of boku as a first- person pronoun option for protagonists beginning in the late 90s. Introduction Comics (manga) and their animated counterparts (anime) have had an immense impact on Japanese popular culture. As it appears on television, anime, in addition to frequently airing television shows, can also be utilized to sell anything as mundane as convenient store goods to electronics, and characters rendered in an anime-inspired style have been used to sell school uniforms (Toku 2007:19). -

The Female Gaze in Contemporary Japanese Literature Abstract The female gaze can be used by writers and readers to look at narratives from a perspective that sees women as subjects instead of objects. Applying a female gaze to discourses that have traditionally been male-dominated opens new avenues of interpretation that are empowering from a feminist perspective. In this dissertation, I use the murder mystery novels of the bestselling female author Kirino Natsuo and the graphic novels of a prolific four-woman artistic collective called CLAMP to demonstrate how writers are capable of applying a female gaze to the themes of their work and how readers can and have read their work from the perspectives allowed by a female gaze. Kirino Natsuo presents a female perspective on such issues as prostitution, marriage, and equal employment laws in her novels, which are often based on sensationalist news stories. Meanwhile, CLAMP challenges the discourses surrounding the production and consumption of fictional women, especially the young female characters, or shojo, that have become iconic in Japanese popular culture. -
