September 23, 2010 iv ABSTRACT TALKING TO STRANGERS – A SOCIOLINGUISTIC EXPERIMENT: VARIATION IN INITIAL DYADIC INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SPANISH-SPEAKERS IN EARLY 21 st CENTURY BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA Mary Ann Dziugis, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2010 Supervising Professor: Laurel Smith Stvan What are the chances of a dyad of Spanish-speaking strangers using informal address in casual, initial interactions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, today? To discover the pattern(s) of contemporary address, the Principal Investigator (PI) conducted a sociolinguistic experiment focusing on strangers’ initial interactions to minimize the influence of Brown and Gilman’s (1960) dimensions of power and solidarity on address variation. To gather natural and reported speech, the PI used mixed methodologies: participant observation, TV news, survey questionnaires, and interviews. She enhanced the authenticity of reported speech via the use of her new tool—a photo interlocutor prompter sheet. The research consisted of a triangulated quantitative exploration of extra-linguistic variables with qualitative insights gained via one-on-one interviews. Quantitative findings revealed: (i) older speakers use informal to address younger interlocutors, (ii) symmetrical dyads of Junior generation (18-29) and Middle generation (30-49) speakers use informal address—regardless of gender, and (i) even symmetrical dyads of Senior generation (50+) v females use informal extensively. While many of the interviewed Argentines equated the increase in informal address with the loss of good manners, others viewed “Argentine Light”, a term used to label the use of informal with strangers in casual interactions, as a less prejudicial way of speaking. Based on feedback, the PI attributes strangers’ spontaneous use of informal address to Brown and Gilman’s (1989) dimension of ‘affect’ i.e. likability, affinity. DOI: https://doi.org/10.4312/slo2.0.2020.1.35-65 The aim of the present article is to analyse the existing publications dealing with Czech gender linguistics, and attitudes of their authors. Firstly, the authors of the article present an overview of the development of the discipline, begin- ning with its rejection to today’s acceptance. They then deal with the various ways to label people with regard to gender, and consider the formation of nouns labelling women as one of the strategies to make women visible in the language. The authors also inform readers about the psycholinguistic testing of the “ge- neric” masculine in the Czech language and about the possibilities of Czech gender-fair language. The authors discuss the proper names of persons from the perspective of gender and personal identities, while they briefly mention translatology publications which reflect the gender perspective. Additionally, the authors present a call for further research in certain areas.     Topics in Linguistics (2017), 18(2), pp. 36-47 10.1515/topling-2017-0009 Studying text coherence in Czech – a corpus-based analysis Magdaléna Rysová University of Economics, Czech Republic Abstract The paper deals with the field of Czech corpus linguistics and represents one of various current studies analysing text coherence through language interactions. It presents a corpus- based analysis of grammatical coreference and sentence information structure (in terms of contextual boundness) in Czech. It focuses on examining the interaction of these two language phenomena and observes where they meet to participate in text structuring. Specifically, the paper analyses contextually bound and non-bound sentence items and examines whether (and how often) they are involved in relations of grammatical coreference in Czech newspaper articles. The analysis is carried out on the language data of the Prague Dependency Treebank (PDT) containing 3,165 Czech texts. The results of the analysis are helpful in automatic text annotation – the paper presents how (or to what extent) the annotation of grammatical coreference may be used in automatic (pre-)annotation of sentence information structure in Czech. It demonstrates how accurately we may (automatically) assume the value of contextual boundness for the antecedent and anaphor (as the two participants of a grammatical coreference relation). The results of the paper demonstrate that the anaphor of grammatical coreference is automatically predictable – it is a non-contrastive contextually bound sentence item in 99.18% of cases. On the other hand, the value of contextual boundness of the antecedent is not so easy to estimate (according to the PDT, the antecedent is contextually non-bound in 37% of cases, non-contrastive contextually bound in 50% and contrastive contextually bound in 13% of cases).

Jakobson’s experiences within various Circles differed: those in Moscow and Prague provided a stimulating context for social and intellectual exchange, which was valuable to the gregarious Jakobson. During his years in Scandinavia, Jakobson’s professional contacts supported him politically and even economically, mitigating his experiences of forced serial exile. On immigrating to the U.S., he co-founded a Linguistic Circle of New York. But this last Jakobsonian Circle never recaptured the collegiality of Moscow or Prague. After he moved to Harvard in 1949, his activities expanded beyond the university to a joint appointment at MIT.

    Rhetorical Structure of English and Czech Academic Book Reviews Jana Kozubíková Šandová University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic This study focuses on a contrastive analysis of linguistics book review articles written in English and Czech. The aim is two-fold: 1) to find out any variation in the rhetorical structure of these reviews; 2) to explore whether these structural differences somehow affect the way communicative goals of the genre of the book review article are achieved in the two language cultures. The theoretical framework of this study provides a modified version of Motta-Roth's (1995) taxonomy of rhetorical moves and their sub-functions in book review articles. The results show that in spite of a number of similarities between the two writing traditions, certain variation occurs attributable to different rhetorical preferences of both cultures and varied cultural expectations of the genre. Introduction This paper is an investigation about whether the rhetorical structure of the book review article written in English may be found in corresponding texts in different languages. Therefore, one aim of the present study is to examine any variation in the rhetorical structure of English and Czech academic book reviews. This paper also attempts to find out whether the possible differences in the internal structure somehow influence achieving communicative goals of the book review articles in the two different academic writing traditions. Nowadays, academic review genres have taken on importance in applied linguistics literature. One of the reasons may be that the Internet abounds with various scholarly articles and scientific books so gaining access to them is much easier than ever before.

While scholarly consensus identifies five meanings for po- and an additional meaning in conjunction with the suffix-yva- , the relationships among these six meanings have not been fully explored. By means of a corpus-linguistic analysis I determine the semantic structure linking the various meanings of po-: I collect a randomly selected sample of po-prefixed verbs (with accompanying contexts) from the Russian National Corpus, the largest annotated Russian language corpus extant. The collected data is manually tagged for a number of collocational, syntactic, and semantic parameters to create a behavioral profile ofpo- . The behavioral profile is subjected to a hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, resulting in a dendrogram that illustrates varying degrees of connection among meanings. Meanings are grouped into clusters based on degree of similarity, and the intra- and inter-cluster differences are investigated by use of z-scores and t-values.
