Peter Melchett

On 6th October a large variety of people gathered at Courtyard Farm, Ringstead to pay respect to Peter Melchett, who had died aged 70 at the end of August, by walking round some of the permissive paths on the farm. Afterwards some of the people who knew him personally or had worked with him in some capacity said a few words about what he meant to them. Among these was Alan Mattingley, a previous chief executive of the Ramblers who mentioned Peter’s ability to master a complex brief when he was in the House of Lords and speaking about the Wildlife and Countryside Bill that became an Act in 1981. This bill covered many different aspects of the protection of plants, birds and animals, the countryside including the National Parks and sites of special scientific interest, as well as the alteration of the Definitive Map and gaining new public rights of way. With Peter’s advocacy the bill was much improved. Peter was elected as the Ramblers President for 1981 to 1984. The Farm is in the care of a charitable trust and it is expected that the permissive paths will remain open.

New House Style

At a recent area council, the members considered a set of proposals from Julian White to modernise various aspects of our communications. This proposal was unanimously approved by the members of the area council.

One part of the proposal handles how we produce our paper and online walk programmes. At the moment the walk leaders communicate their walks to the group walk secretary who manually produces a walk listing in the group style. Then someone else (or sometimes the same person) has to retype all of the walks into the national walks database on the Rambler website. Meanwhile I have to convert all of the group listings into page formats for this booklet. This is a highly time consuming process, and due to the manual retyping can cause errors.

Moving forward, we plan to have a single online system (which is being developed by Phil Harbord of the Norwich Group.) This system will allow group walk secretaries to enter the details once onto a simple online form, or they can even let each walk leader enter their own walks. Once all of the walks have been entered the system will automatically upload the walks to the Ramblers website, and produce the pages for this booklet, making everyone’s jobs easier.

So far only Norwich has moved onto this new system, but over the coming months, all of the other groups will be assisted in moving to the new system.

What do you think of the new layout for Norwich? You can email me your feedback to [email protected] or phone me on 01362 709044.

Hike Norfolk

Hike Norfolk has a rather lovely few months, with weekends away in Amsterdam and Oxford, along with a week of walking and eating in the Lake District. There have also been lots of pub nights, lots of meals out and even some walking. We list all of our events at: https://www.meetup.com/Norfolk-Area-Ramblers/

Congratulations to the group chair, Lukasz, for getting married and we hope that they have many months before having an argument. Well done also to all those who took part in the mud run, so very brave! And we’re doing it again in 2019 if anyone wants to join us.

We have several walks taking place as part of the Winter Walking Festival, and there are details of these on page 17. This is so important to us that we’ve sacrificed our full page in this programme so that the WWF can get a page to itself. We’re very kind-hearted :)

Julian.

Short & Leisurely Group

Sadly the Short & Leisurely group have decided that they will no longer be running walks, primarily due to a shortage of walk leaders. I would like to assure everyone who is used to walking with this group that their preferred style of walk will still be catered for in Norfolk Area Ramblers.

The Wensum group run Thursday morning walks as well as a monthly coach trip. Each of these walks will generally have a shorter option available, if you do not want to do the full advertised walk. Please contact the walk leader in question for details of the shorter walk.

There are also short & leisurely walks run by King’s Lynn group on alternate Wednesdays. As I am sure you are aware, your Ramblers’ membership allows you to walk with any group in the county (or even GB wide) so you should have no problem walking with a different group.

Legstretchers

Legstretchers is the long distance walking group of Norfolk Area Ramblers and we’ve had another successful year of walks. So, in 2019, we’re going to start spreading our wings a bit more. We’ve got out first weekend away, which is to walk the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and there are already nearly twenty people going. We’re also planning some social events and we are going to offer an extra couple of walks to the usual programme.

We list our walks on Meetup, but you can find them at: http://www.legstretchers.org.uk/walking-programme/

On 2 December 2018, Cas is leading an 18 mile walk from Mulbarton Village Hall, starting at 9am, near to NR14 8JG (TG193006). I’m pleased to confirm that there will be no repeat of what has become known as exposegate following Cas’s last walk…. This is a joint walk with N&S LDWA.

On 6 January 2019, Liam is leading an 18.5 mile walk from Overstrand, starting at 9.30am, post-code NR27 0PP, meet at Cliff Top Café, Cliff Road, Overstrand. The council car parking here is sadly expensive, so you might want to find on-street car parking. This is a joint walk with N&S LDWA and Liam will be providing all walkers with Kit Kats. Swimming in the North Sea can be arranged and Liam has pledged to join anyone else who takes part.

On 3 February 2019, Cas is leading another walk. Details TBC.

On 3 March 2019, there’s a walk. We don’t know where yet, but check on the above web-site nearer the time.

Any questions or queries, please -e mail me at [email protected] and I’ll be glad to help. Details of our weekend away is at: https://www.meetup.com/Norfolk-Area-Ramblers/events/253124267/

16 Newsletter & Walks Programme December 2018 to March 2019

Winter Walking Festival

The Winter Walking Festival (WWF) will take place this year between Friday 21 December 2018 and Sunday 6 January 2019. The theme set by the Ramblers is about loneliness and exclusion and we’re really keen to use this opportunity to encourage people into walking with us, and we’ll make that as easy as we can. There will be further information at: http://www.norfolkra.org.uk/index.php/2018/10/21/winter-walking- festival/

All walks we offer between the above two dates will be automatically part of the WWF. However, I’ve also asked groups to offer walks where the leader is prepared to offer extra help to those who might need support on coming on their first walk. Loneliness can make it hard for people to join a group, so we really want to do everything we can. From mid-November, the above web-site will have those walks listed separately.

The below walks are being offered as part of the festival by Hike Norfolk and Norwich groups, but aren’t listed elsewhere in this area programme. Full details of these walks will be available on the above web-site.

21/12/2018—Heather (10am, 5 miles from Overstrand) [Hike Norfolk] 22/12/2018—Susanna (TBC) [Hike Norfolk] 23/12/2018—Clive (5 miles from Cringleford) [Hike Norfolk] 25/12/2018—Maria (11am. 5 miles from Britannia Café, Norwich [Norwich Group] 29/12/2018—Maria (11am, 5 miles from Whitlingham Visitor’s Centre) [Norwich Group] 30/12/2018—Steve (10.30 am, 5 miles from Train Wood/Barn Rd, Norwich, passing site of 9 of Norwich’s lost churches) [Hike Norfolk] 02/01/2019—Julian (09.30am, 17 miles from Brandon) [Hike Norfolk] 06/01/2019—Maggie (10.30am, 5 miles from Rockland St. Mary) [Hike Norfolk]

MEETUP

Norfolk Area Ramblers have a section on Meetup, which is a web-site where people can go to find new groups and events. We have over 1,300 members on this web-site and it is used mostly by Hike Norfolk, Norwich Group and Legstretchers. We’ve found it an effective way to increase the number of people on walks and welcome its use by more groups.

The site can be found at: https://meetup.com/Norfolk-Area-Ramblers/

BRECKLAND SHORT BRISK WALKS

Our walks in Breckland are short but brisk. We encourage walkers to walk at their own pace with a front and back marker. We do not stop during the walk, but there is usually a welcome stop for coffee or tea at the end of the walk. There is no need to book – just ensure you have your membership card with you and arrive in good time to hear the pre-walk introduction. You are welcome to come for a taster walk first to see you like it! A good pair of walking shoes and adequate outdoor clothing is all that is needed as on occasions it can be wet and muddy. Postcodes shown on the schedule are as near as we can get them. Grid references have been provided in some cases. In very wet weather we might have to change the normal routes for safety reasons. However, the meeting places will be the same. Walks may have to be cancelled in very bad weather…please phone or email on the morning if in doubt.

The following paragraph relates to all walks advertised in this guide:

All sporting and leisure activities have inherent hazards associated with them and rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the paramount concern, accidents will occasionally occur. It is important, therefore, that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity and take all reasonable steps to eliminate or minimise the potential for an accident to arise.
