Medals of William Peddie Sharratt

The medals of William Peddie SHARRATT are:

96071 Pvt. W.P.Sharratt 17/SQN M.G.C. [D.C.M.] 1148 Corp. W.P.Sharratt Thorynecroft’s M.I. {Q.S.A. 6 clasps] [Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek] 1148 Corp. Thorynecroft’s Mounted Infantry was raised at Pietermaritzburg 16 th October 1899 by Major A W Thornecroft, its strength 500 men. At Spoinkop, fifty percent of its men became casualties.

Berkshire Yeomanry . Following the 1908 reforms within the British Army, the Yeomanry was established.

Mobilised in August 1914, the Berkshire Yeomanry trained at Churn on the Berkshire Downs for three months and then proceeded to the East Coast to guard against a possible German invasion. In April 1915, the Regiment sailed for Egypt and were shipped, without their horses, to the Gallipoli peninsular where they first saw action against the Turks,. After three months in the trenches, the Regiment was withdrawn, their strength having been reduced by casualties and sickness to a mere 50 men.

Brought up to strength once again, the Regiment returned to Egypt and fought during the spring of 1916 in the Western Desert. In 1917, the Berkshire Yeomanry joined the British advance on Jerusalem. They fought two unsuccessful baffles in March and April 1917 resulting in the eviction the Turkish Army from Gaza; and the third Battle of Gaza under General Allenby later culminated in the capture of Jerusalem in December 1917. During this campaign the Berkshire Yeomanry were involved in two successful cavalry charges against the Turks army.

In April 1918, the Regiment amalgamated with the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry forming C Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps; and in August 1918, this was renumbered 101 Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (the Bucks & Berks Yeomanry). In June 1918, it moved via

4 Italy to France. They reached France in July 1918 and saw action in support of 51st Highland Division and in the final baffles in Belgium in the Second Army.

The Distinguished Conduct Medal is the premier award for gallantry in the field of battle awarded ranks other than officers in the British Army; since 1916 it ranked as superior to the Military Medal. Sharratt’s medal was gazetted in the London Gazette 18 February 1918 : No.30530; Suppl.2170: 16.

The citation reads : “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great determination and fearlessness in keeping up the supply of ammunition for two machine guns during an action”.

Eaton Bray / Edlesborough : Yew Tree Farm, owned by the Sharratt family until the late 60’s. On this site stood the largest witch elm tree in the country, until it blew down in the gales of 1938.

Finally here is the material with my list of the mistakes on your site.

Frederick Sharratt and Sarah Grooms family: There are two men of this name having children; the other one is a descendant of Thomas White Sharratt, born Frederick Impey who used his mother’s surname later. His children are the Minnie, Frederick and Mable chr in Dunstable in the 1880s. So residence is also wrong for this Frederick who was having children in Eaton Bray.

Samuel Sharratt family: No B in names of Samuel’s children. Only one Emma in 1846, belongs to Samuel not Thomas. Somehow she got put in both families and no one noticed probably when my great uncle compiled his cousin Miles Jones’ notes from his visit in about 1907.

William Sharratt family. William Percy was recorded in both baptism and birth records as William Perry; he must have changed it later.

David Rollins family: David and Mary Ann had three daughters who were born alive and apparently three stillborn sons, probably all but one daughter born in England before coming to America. No other children. After David’s death, Mary Ann had nine friends and relatives, sealed to David as extra wives. This has been misunderstood leading to the notion that a couple in Utah were having children in England as late as 1866, when she was 54! Mary Ann was born in 1814, her last child born in Utah in 1854.

Maximilian Sharratt family: James Sharratt 1804 Except for extracts by a researcher, there is no proof that this individual ever existed.

6 There is no infant baptism record, no burial record. There is a George on this date; Have a list of extracts made by a researcher, George Minns, in 1920s for my grandmother and her siblings. He simply miscopied this entry and it was perpetuated through the family. There are no James either before or after in either family for generations, if ever.

The wife of Maximilian Sharratt was Elizabeth Tavener. Her mother remarried a Thomas Battams after her father’s death in 1784 when Elizabeth would have been 10. She and most of her sisters were recorded in early temple records as Tavener Battams and maybe they were known as that or maybe Mary Ann Sharratt just got it wrong. The strange spellings are of recent origin, I think from the same relative who gave extra children to David and Mary Ann.
