Muskoka Lakes Maps 43 muskokalakes.ca 3 MAYOR’S WELCOME It is such a privilege to be able to write the cover letter for our 2019 Community Guide as your newly elected Mayor of Muskoka Lakes. It is a position I am both humbled and honoured to have. My promise to each of you over this term of Council is to utilize our amazing team of staff and your talented new Councillors to manage the business of Muskoka Lakes, in a respectful and dedicated fashion, ensuring Muskoka is protected for our children, our grandchildren and our great grandchildren. We are pleased to produce this publication as we continue to enhance communications with our residents and visitors. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Township is distributing almost 4,500 Community Guides to our residents via a bulk mail drop. Additional copies are also available at the Township Office in Port Carling. The Community Guide is a hard copy supplement to more detailed information available on the Township website www.muskokalakes.ca. As you browse through this Guide, we are confident it will become a convenient reference tool to assist in providing information and answers to questions you might have about the many services our municipality has to offer. The Community Guide provides a wealth of information, such as names and contact information of municipal officials, emergency service telephone numbers, waste management details, and the locations of parks, trails, arenas, docks, boat ramps, churches, libraries and community centres. You will find listings for community service organizations, with their activities and events that take place during the year. There are a number of new items that we will be rolling out this year to improve municipal communication. Stay tuned for a new, more efficient Committee and Council schedule that engages the public even more but at the same time allows for greater efficiencies. An updated and improved Township website as well as the long-awaited web casting of Council meetings so you can see first hand everything Muskoka from anywhere in the world without having to be in our Council Chambers. I would like to congratulate Rachel Olive on winning the Muskoka Lakes Photo Contest. The selected photo is featured on the cover of the guide. The image celebrates the Township of Muskoka Lakes by highlighting the natural beauty of the area. On behalf of myself and your entire Council and staff, I would like to welcome you to 2019 and hope you enjoy this year’s Community Guide. Sincerely, Phil Harding Mayor Phil Harding Township of Muskoka Lakes MUNICIPAL INFORMATION MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS TOWNSHIP OF MUSKOKA LAKES MUNICIPAL OFFICE Chief Administrative Officer Steve McDonald 1 Bailey Street, P.O. It’s hard to know where to start. Perhaps it’s in recognizing that Muskoka is magical – a place that grabs hold of people’s hearts and imaginations, then never lets go. It is this emotional attachment that brings people back to Muskoka time and time again, and in the process creates a superior brand. Muskoka has been a destination of choice since the late 1800s when travellers discovered its abundant beauty and charm by steamboat. Muskoka’s brand recognition has grown steadily since, and spread beyond the borders of Canada. Muskoka has repeatedly been recognized one of the world’s top vacation destinations. To highlight a few accolades, National Geographic has ranked Muskoka first in their 10 Best Summer Trips and among the Best 20 Trips in the World. Reader’s Digest named Muskoka as one of the Top 10 Greatest Canadian Road Trips. Encompassing an area of 4,765 square kilometres, including more than 650 lakes over 8 hectares in size, and 38 wetlands designated as Provincially Significant, it is not surprising that Muskoka is Ontario’s premiere cottaging destination, attracting over 3.2 million person visits annually*.
