An exceptionally active and important comprimario arist, Giordani’s first traced performance seems to have been of the role of Sgalisa in Brunetto’s Cristo di Valaperta at the Milano Teatro Lirico in 1894. In 1896 he created both the Abbé and l’Incredibile in the Scala premiere of Giordano’s Andrea Chenier in 1896, performing these two roles again at the Metropolitan premiere late the same year. 1897 marked his work in the Teatro world premiere of Leoncavallo’s La Bohème , again in two roles: Gaudenzio and Durand. Perhaps his most important creation was Spoletta in the first performance of Puccini’s Tosca , 1900. Two years later, he was the first Abbé de Chazeuil at the Milano Teatro Lirico premiere of Ciléa’s Adriana Lecouvreur . After a sudden, mysterious departure from the Met following a Feb. 6, 1905 performance of , Giordani returned to his native Bologna and committed suicide. To avoid confusion, Arthur added “Granville” to his name, but no one (including family members) seems to know where it came from. In later years he was the distinguished head of the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) voice department. Her mother was Leonora Speyer (Lady Edgar Speyer), an American poet and violinist who had played professionally “under the batons of Arthur Nikisch and Anton Seidl, among others”. She also had won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1927 for her book, “Fiddler’s Farewell”. Enid was the first of her four daughters, Enid by Leonora’s first husband, Count von Ferdinand Stosch. After the Count died Leonora wed Louis Meredith Howland (“a member of an old New York family”). After a time they were divorced and Mrs. Howland in 1902 married Edgar Speyer, a banker who was knighted in England and a noted philanthropist and arts patron. Speyer was friends with composers such as Elgar, Grieg, , Debussy and Percy Grainger. As an aside, he also owned violins (plural) by Stradivarius and Guarneri which were used by his wife in her public and private performances. Strauss dedicated his opera to Speyer. Apparently Enid and the family had moved back to the U.S. at the outset of W.W. I and resided at either their country home at Lake George, NY, or a home in Newport, RI. In 1919 Enid was engaged to wed J. Robert Hewitt, a graduate of Williams College and an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve force, hence after the wedding she became Enid Hewitt. With whom she studied voice and other details as to a career seemed to have disappeared. High Society folks of the time would take up the arts as an avocation, but no matter how talented they might be they would seldom pursue a public career. In 1929 she recorded six “Personal Record” sides for Victor, apparently as gifts for friends. They indicate a fine voice and a person with musical taste. She was residing in New York City at the time of her mother’s death in 1956. Oh, did I forget to mention that her stepfather (Edgar Speyer) had Mount Speyer in the Antarctic named after him by Robert Scott’s 1910 British Antarctic Expedition to which he donated a percentage of the cost. He also underwrote the Queens Hall Orchestra (England) and their Promenade Concerts from 1902 to 1914 while he served as Chairman of the Queen’s Hall Orchestra Concert Board. Just about 1-2. $8.00. TOBIA (THEODORE) KITTAY [t] . Near St. Petersburg, 1887-Chicago, 1965. Kittay was born in Russia but became a naturalized American. He studed at the Conservatory of Petrograd and in Milan with Amato. He emigrated to America with his mother and two sisters to small quarters at 82 Avenue B in New York City. He was described being raggedly attired although he managed to sing for some society women. Their help provided him with an audition with Gatti-Casazza on the Met stage, his audience including Pasquale Amato. The result was that Amato took him under his wing to Italy for study. Apart from a few appearances with Boston Opera and Chicago Grand Opera, Kittay’s operatic career never really got off the ground. The tenor spent much of his time singing concerts, recitals and after dinner shows, including a business convention in Elkhart, Indiana in 1926. This may not have represented the stellar stage career the young man had envisioned when he left Russia, but it was certainly preferable to starving in the streets of New York. By 1925, Kittay had settled in Chicago where he accepted a position as cantor at Congregation Rodfei Zedek in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood. He subsequently toured Europe as a soloist with the Yale Glee Club. His operatic debut was in 1929 with the touring American Opera Company managed by . With this company he created the role of Amaury in the world premiere of Clarence Loomis’s now forgotten opera, Yolanda of Cyprus, in Oct., 1929. In addition to standard operatic repertoire Kullman appeared in operetta and at Smith College in an unidentified Händel opera. 1931 marked his debut as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly . After the first act he received seven curtain calls, leading to remarkable success in Germany. Because of the political climate, Kullman left Germany in 1935 and was immediately welcomed by the Met where he remained 25 seasons. His last two years were in smaller, secondary parts. His first success in the U.S. was taking the leading tenor role in composer Homer Moore’s American opera, Louis XIV in St Louis, replacing an unprepared (and according to at least one report also inebriated) Florencio Constantino for the second performance. Supposedly Léon learned the role in two days and was a great success (even if the opera wasn’t). Martin studied voice with Leveret Merrill and Holtzmann and had been a soloist with the Yale Glee Club (one source indicates it was the Harvard Glee Club) when the organization made a tour of France in 1922. Martin was heard by the Opéra-Comique management and was given a contract there to sing the title role in Massenet’s Werther the following year, although he had yet to appear on an operatic stage. His debut was extremely successful and he subsequently sang there Cavaradossi, Rodolfo and Pinkerton. He then appeared elsewhere in France, finally being invited to sing at the Paris Opéra. Interestingly, he was, as a foreigner, not allowed to create any roles there, although he gave the second and subsequent performances of Huë’s Le Miracle , with Georges Thill singing the premiere only. It was the same situation with the Paris premiere of Turandot , which Martin had prepared. Evidently Thill, however, found the tenor role in this opera more congenial and decided to sing all fifteen performances. Martin had success in Italy, Switzerland and England as well and was supposedly also offered a contract by the Metropolitan Opera. However he voluntarily retired from the stage after a few years and returned to to care for his invalid wife, supporting himself on an inheritance. He did reappear, this time with the Chicago Opera the seasons of 1935-37. On 1 April 1937 he created the role of Amelia’s lover in the world premiere of Gian-Carlo Menotti’s Amelia Goes to the Ball at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He was alive in the 1960s and living in Lowell, MA, although what became of him, his wife, and whether or not he ever sang again would be an interesting mystery to solve.
