FRANCIS: Evaluation of an innovative condom distribution program and point-of- access messaging targeting Black college women (Under the direction of Seth M. Noar) Condom access is a major issue on some college campuses in the United States, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Lack of access increases risk oF adverse sexual health outcomes, especially For young Black women. This project evaluated a structural intervention—a condom distribution program (via dispensers with Free condoms) and point-of-access messaging (via posters on the dispensers)—on an all-female HBCU campus in North Carolina. The three-month intervention occurred between November 2015 and January 2016. We used a pre-post intervention only longitudinal panel design. We recruited N = 195 sexually active students to complete a baseline survey and N = 118 students completed the follow-up survey. The retention rate was 61%. The majority oF students (89%) were aware oF the dispensers. Slightly less than half (44%) used the dispensers, and 22% had those condoms with them at Follow-up. Students mainly used dispensers to access condoms in the dorm bathrooms (81%, n = 42). They felt extremely comFortable using the dispensers, especially when alone. More than 70% (n = 38) who took condoms used them for sexual intercourse. Most students (77%) recognized at least one oF the messages that had been posted on the dispensers. They reported that the messages made them feel confident and proud to be taking condoms, and motivated them to take a condom. More than a third oF students (38%) talked about the dispensers or messages. Students were most likely to talk to their friends or sexual partners. iii Condom acquisition and carrying increased signiFicantly (p <. 05) after the intervention. Perceptions oF condom availability and accessibility also increased significantly (p <. 05). Perceptions oF condom acceptability and norms did not change. Condom intentions and use decreased significantly among the sample as a whole. In multivariate analyses, dispenser use was associated with greater condom use. This study provides empirical evidence that condom distribution and safer sex messaging can improve perceptions of condom access (particularly availability and accessibility) and impact condom preparatory behaviors (acquisition and carrying). The findings add to our understanding of HIV/STI prevention interventions targeted at young Black women on an HBCU campus. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A West African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I believe it takes a village to get an individual through graduate school.     Condoms and Viagra: An exploration of processes and forces that shape notions of sexuality and policies Jayashree Ramakrishna Introduction Examination of the development, propagation, acceptance and use of condoms and Viagra provides a keen heuristic device for exploring contexts, processes and factors that shape sexuality and policies related to sexuality. Juxtaposing condoms and Viagra affords sharp contrasts, which focus attention on cultural and societal norms, religious injunctions, and perceptions of femininity and masculinity, in the context of nationalism and the neoliberal economy. This understanding might help to improve ways of identifying and influencing these processes. One such process, medicalization, has been a major intellectual trend of the 20th and 21st centuries. Increasingly, medical and biomedical modes of thought dominate the discourse on sexuality, and the expansion of medical authority over many domains that were hitherto considered social conditions or life experience is unquestioned. For instance, life processes such as birthing, going through menopause (Gunson, 2010), aging and dying (Seymour, 1999), conditions such as shyness (Scott, 2006), obesity, infertility (Becker & Nachtigall, 1992), sexual behavior (Hart & Wellings, 2002) and domestic violence, as well as “risk factors”, have come under the purview of medicine. Juxtaposing condoms and Viagra affords sharp contrasts that focus attention on perceptions of femininity and masculinity and changing cultural and societal norms in the context of hardening of national and other identities. This paper centres on the Indian experience; it attempts to tease out the cultural, social and economic processes and factors (including vacillations in international policies) that have inhibited the acceptance of condoms, the persistence of the ‘culture of silence’ with regard to sexuality, and the increasing intolerance of diversity. While condoms and sexual education have been part of public health and cultural discourse, Viagra has essentially remained confined to the medical arena. However, in a short time Viagra has become accessible (the process being eased by neo-liberal economy) and has gained acceptance. The juxtaposition of condoms and Viagra in the Indian milieu also highlights the tension between prevention and curative aspects of biomedicine and the privileging of the latter over the former. The differing standards used for approval of female condoms and the research pointing to the utility of Viagra for treating sexual dysfunction in women on antidepressant is telling. The paper ends with a brief discussion of innovative responses to disregard/violation of sexual rights, the effective use of media and community mobilisation (both traditional and internet based) to bring the issue to the national forefront.

This paper uses critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) as a methodology to review the evidence that condom fit is predictive of sexual pleasure, product acceptability, and correct and consistent condom use behavior. The available literature assessing the relationships among condom use, sexual pleasure, and condom fit indicates the perception of poor condom fit is associated with reduced acceptability and pleasure ratings, lowered rates of correct and consistent condom use, and increased risk of condom failure. Existing theoretical work is built upon to propose a more comprehensive theoretical framework conceptualizing the mechanisms underlying these relationships, including penile and condom dimensions and contextual factors. Web search results and condom brand websites are subsequently analyzed regarding the amount and quality of size information provided suggesting that accessing reliable information about condom sizing can be difficult. Findings are integrated to provide recommendations for the condom industry and those working in the field of sexual health promotion, intended to aid these sectors in improving condom users’ knowledge about and access to appropriately sized condoms, for example, by conducting more collaborative cross-sector work regarding condom fit, in order to increase adherence to correct and consistent condom use as a preventive health behavior.
