The controversies in the field, particularly, circulating around the term ‘post-colonial/postcolonial’itself continue unabated, but the relevance of neo-imperialism and the issues emerg- ing from the engagements of post-colonized societies in a ‘glocal’ age have demonstrated the usefulness of post-colonial analysis. From the perspective of this decade it is possible to look back at the 1990s and see how important the humanities in general and post-colonial discourse in particular were to developing a new language to address the problems of global culture and the relationships between local cultures and global forces.This occurred because the classical narratives of Modernity in which social theory was mired – dependency theory and centre–periphery models – were unable to explain the multi- directional flow of global exchanges, a flow that was most noticeable in cultural exchange. One significant example of this multi-directional flow is the phenomenon of the Black Atlantic, which reveals the amazing complexity and productivity of African cultures in the Atlantic. The history of such flows reveals that the multi-directional and transcultural nature of global culture is not a new phenomenon. Many of the issues and problems surrounding the topic of global- ization (the place of the ‘glocal’;the function of local agency under the pressure of global forces; the role of imperialism in globalization; the connection between imperialism and neoliberal economics) are addressed,and continue to be addressed by the post-colonial analysis of imperial power. Thus, although we need to be careful about falsely prescribing post-colonial theory as a panacea,and should keep in mind the firm grounding of post-colonial discourse in the historical vii INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND EDITION phenomenon of colonialism, the field of post-colonial studies has provided useful strategies for a wider field of global analysis. Post- colonial literary and cultural production in particular has demon- strated the insistent reality of local agency, an agency that can address simple dualistic approaches to the local and global. One of the most persistent and controversial topics of contem- porary politics is the issue of the environment. Global warming has demonstrated the devastating effects of the industrial revolution and the unfettered pursuit of capital expansion. The environment, and attendant topics such as ecofeminism, ecological imperialism, environmentalism, speciesism have all taken an increasingly prominent place in post-colonial thought because it has become clear that there is a direct connection between colonialist treatment of indigenous flora and fauna and treatment of colonized and otherwise dominated subjects and societies. The devastation of colonized place (and poten- tially of the planet) paved the way for the devastation of societies.Until now the destruction of the physical and human environments have become the same thing. Increasingly,post-colonial theory has been found useful in examin- ing a variety of colonial relationship beyond the classic colonizing activities of the British Empire.The concept of boundaries and borders has been crucial in the imperial occupation and domination of indige- nous space. And the question of borders and borderlands has now become a pressing issue in an age of increasingly hysterical border pro- tection. Cultural borders are becoming recognized as a critical region of colonial and neo-colonial domination, of cultural erosion, and of class and economic marginalization. The field of post-colonial studies now includes the vexed subjects of contemporary neo-colonialism:the identities and relationships of Chicano,Latino and hybrid subjectivities of various kinds. These subjects, who slip between the boundaries of the grand narratives of history and nation, are becoming an increas- ingly important constituency for post-colonial studies. Another issue that has become more prominent, because more complex than previously regarded, is the issue of the sacred. Religion, the impact of missions and the nature and function of a ‘post-colonial sacred’ are becoming increasingly prevalent in what some refer to as a ‘post-secular age’. There can be no doubt that the aggressive articulation of religious dogma, the failure of dialogue and the increas- ingly polarized globe have offered unprecedented global dangers. But these realities also offer opportunities for an analysis of the kinds of complex hybridized developments of the sacred that have been revealed by post-colonial analysis. viii INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND EDITION One of the terms emerging from post-colonial studies seems to circumvent some of the perceived problems inherent in descriptions such as ‘post-colonial’ and diaspora. ‘Transnational’ as an adjective is growing in use since it extends to migrant, diasporic and refugee communities not directly emerging from the colonial experience. The increasing flow of populations, the mobility of individuals, the increased crossing of borders and the blurring of the concept of ‘home’ have produced a range of transnational literatures and other forms of cultural production that extend the field of the post-colonial in productive ways. Some more familiar terms in post-colonial studies have been included in this second edition, such as ‘double colonization’, ‘first nations’ and ‘translation’. Others, such as ‘whiteness’ have already blossomed into a virtual field of their own. Many of these terms are central to post-colonial studies, others are shared with other fields of study; some, like ‘race’ are broader than post-colonial studies itself. Since the beginning of Japan’s prolonged recession, individuals living lives that do not correspond to the standards of mainstream society have faced increased scrutiny in the mainstream media and popular discourse. Such individuals are often categorized as new phenomena and labeled with terms that emphasize their failure to adhere to economically productive models of selfhood. In order to challenge such categorizations, this paper focuses on contemporary, fictive representations of social nonconformity, while drawing parallels with earlier texts that articulate many of the same problems.     History, Postcolonialism and Postmodernism in Toni Morrison’s Beloved Mariangela Palladino This paper examines Toni Morrison’s fifth novel, Beloved, which, together with Jazz and Paradise, constitute Morrison’s contribution to the process of re-writing black American history. Postcolonial thought has offered one of the most potent challenges to the notion of the ‘end of history’ posited by postmodernists of both left and right. Focusing principally on Beloved (1987), my paper explores how Toni Morrison insists upon the necessity of a conscious and inevitably painful engagement with the past. Uncovering a dense series of correspondences, drawing upon Christological symbols, nu- merology, and flower imagery, I argue that the principal character is closely identified with Christ throughout the novel, which in its final part refigures the Passion narrative. As a sacrificed black, female Christ, Beloved becomes a focus for Morrison’s concern with redemption through memory. I wish to briefly explore the debate on history between postmodernism and postcolonialism as it constitutes the framework to Toni Morrison’s de- ployment of Christological imagery in order to engage with history. If the dawn of postmodernism marked the beginning of a ‘posthistoric’ era which ‘stipulated that the segment of human life had ended for which history had claimed to offer explanation and understanding’ (Breisach 2003 10), this has been uncompromisingly contested by postcolonialism. The postcolonial claim for the unacknowledged role of the non-Western world in the constitu- tion of modernity is emphasized by Edward Said in Culture and Imperialism (1993) as follows: In the West, post-modernism has seized upon the ahistorical weightlessness, consumerism, and spectacle of the new order.

After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world.

Shedding light on the impact of this theory in the field of literary criticism, the paper focuses on Edward Said's views for the simple reason that he is considered the one who laid the cornerstone of this theory, despite the undeniable role of other leading figures. This theory is mainly based on what Said considers the false image of the Orient fabricated by Western thinkers as the primitive "other" in contrast with the civilized West. He believes that the consequences of colonialism are still persisting in the form of chaos, coups, corruption, civil wars, and bloodshed, which permeates many ex-colonies. The powerful colonizer has imposed a language and a culture, whereas those of the Oriental peoples have been ignored or distorted. Referring to some works of colonial and postcolonial novelists, the paper shows how being free from the repression of imperialism, the natives could, eventually, produce their own culture of opposition, build their own image, and write their history outside the frame they have for long been put into.

Dibrugarh, Assam, Pin-786612 Abstract: The aim of this study is to critically examine from postcolonial point of view how the so called modern Christianity displaced the primitive Igbo religion ,its history and culture in the process of pacification by European powers as depicted in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. He attempted to understand both the merits and demerits of the culture. He even seems to show that a culture or religion which cannot change itself with time would obviously fall apart. For the Hypothetical statement of the study we hold that the primitive Igbo history and culture was in a form of democratic and well balanced state which was not inferior to that of the colonizer. Given the chance, the Igbos could have developed equally to a 'modern' and evolved culture and religion in due time. The modern European cultures were also primitive in their past. They have developed in course of time only with different degrees. But it must be remembered that the 'modernity' associated with ‘Christianity’ is mostly for material progress. Any nation, culture or religion may get advantages for such material progress.

Introduction The formation and subsequent actions of the Nazi government left a devastating and indelible impact on Europe and the world. In the midst of general technological and social progress that has occurred in Europe since the Enlightenment, the Nazis represent one of the greatest social regressions that has occurred in the modern world. Despite the development of a generally more humanitarian and socially progressive conditions in the western world over the past several hundred years, the Nazis instigated one of the most diabolic and genocidal programs known to man. And they did so using modern technologies in an expression of what historian Jeffrey Herf calls “reactionary modernism.” The idea, according to Herf is that, “Before and after the Nazi seizure of power, an important current within conservative and subsequently Nazi ideology was a reconciliation between the antimodernist, romantic, and irrantionalist ideas present in German nationalism and the most obvious manifestation of means ...modern technology.” 1 Nazi crimes were so extreme and barbaric precisely because they incorporated modern technologies into a process that violated modern ethical standards. Nazi crimes in the context of contemporary notions of ethics are almost inconceivable.
