Herr Jr. Vice President Community Development About Lilly Endowment Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family — J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli — through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Gifts of stock in Eli Lilly and Company remain the financial bedrock of the Endowment. We are, however, a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the wishes of the three founders, Lilly Endowment exists to support the causes of religion, education and community development. The Endowment affords special emphasis to projects that benefit young people and promote leadership education and financial self-sufficiency in the nonprofit, charitable sector. The Lilly family’s foremost priority was to help the people of their city and state build a better life. Although the Endowment also supports efforts of national significance and an occasional international project, we remain primarily committed to our hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana. During the conference, NCAA President Mark Emmert will speak, and the Monday networking dinner will be held at the NCAA Hall of Champions, adjacent to the campus. Representatives of the planning committee for Super Bowl 2012, which will be held in Indianapolis, will also be a part of the conference as they discuss the citywide coalition that formed to present the winning Super Bowl bid. Our dynamic and vibrant city has also received national attention with its award-winning “Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick,” part of which runs through campus. Valerie Eickmeier, dean of the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI, will lead a walking tour of IUPUI’s public art installations. Conference attendees will also have an opportunity to tour the rest of the world-class urban bike and pedestrian path, which connects neighborhoods, cultural districts, and entertainment amenities, even as it serves as the downtown hub for the entire central Indiana greenway system.

Washington, D.C. – November 24, 2014 - The Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies (FAPE) is pleased to announce that Don Gummer will create a sculpture for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia, as part of its Site-Specific Collection. Gummer’s design will be unveiled during FAPE’s Annual Events in April 2015, in Washington, D.C. The installation is planned for 2016. “My work for Moscow will express the openness and optimism of America. I am proposing a tall, vertical sculpture that will represent our multicultural energy, while remaining solid and well grounded. It is important that it reflect both the individuality and interconnectedness of our countries,” said Gummer. “It is an honor to share my work with the Russian community, and I appreciate FAPE’s dedication to the project.” Gummer’s sculpture is the 18th work commissioned for FAPE’s Site-Specific Collection. The program was established in 1999 when Joel Shapiro created Conjunction, a forty-foot bronze that stands on the front lawn of the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. The sculpture will be officially dedicated at a ribbon cutting ceremony at the embassy on Friday, June 8. FAPE commissioned the artist to create the sculpture in 2014. Gummer understood the importance of engaging the community beyond the embassy compound and designed a 22-foot-high stainless steel and bronze sculpture that soars from the arrival courtyard and is visible to the citizens of Moscow above security walls. The sculpture is a gift of the artist and made possible through generous donations from Bank of America, Agnes Gund, The Honorable Ronald S. Lauder and Mrs. Jo Carole Lauder, Nancy and Howard Marks, and Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle. The artist describes his work as, “a tall, vertical sculpture that reflects the tension between gravity and velocity, Frontier expresses openness and optimism. It represents the energy and freedom of our multicultural world as well as the individuality and interconnectedness of our countries.” Gummer’s sculpture is the 18th work commissioned for FAPE’s Site-Specific Collection.

    PAGE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1 of 1 September 8, 2011 Don Gummer’s The South Tower newly installed at Herron School of Art and Design across from Indianapolis Cultural Trail Herron alumnus and sculptor Don Gummer came back to Herron School of Art and Design recently to install his work, The South Tower, on the east side of Eskenazi Hall across from The Indianapolis Cultural Trail. “It’s a tall, rectangular, vertically-louvered sculpture that starts to come apart at the top. It’s very simple,” he said. Gummer was on a corner across from the World Trade Center “…on my way to the studio when the attack occurred,” he said, “and I saw the South Tower fall. It’s seared in my memory.” The juxtaposition of the graceful 10’ x 3’ x 2’ stainless steel sculpture to the horror it represents is thought provoking—especially a decade on from the terrorist strikes on the World Trade Center and other locations on September 11, 2001. This is the second Gummer work that has been on temporary loan at Herron, and the second of the sculptor’s works currently installed on the IUPUI campus. The South Tower stands in the same place his work, Reunion, had occupied since the opening celebration for Eskenazi Hall in 2005. This project is one to renovate and improve the 1983 Kevin Roche designed building that serves as the company’s world headquarters. It is a sprawling structure of about 320,000 square feet of space over three floors. Working with Cummins staff and the Ratio Architects, an art program is being formed that will be composed of existing historic works of art already owned by the company, two new site specific commissions, and a many new artworks. Responsibilities Included: • Identifying the significant works of art already deployed in the building. • Making recommendations about the historic artworks that should be conserved and re-used. • Arranging for conservation, re-framing, and storage of the important historic artworks. • Selecting new artists and artworks to compliment the historic collection but work with the company’s updated interior and goals. • Coordinate the locations for art with the architects and review infrastructure conflicts, bracing needs, and lighting. • Manage the contracting, design, review, approval, fabrication, delivery and installation of two new site specific artworks.
