The white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. But since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action. Certainly not in the case of Junior Boys, who’ve readied a new album, Big Black Coat - due for release on 5 February 2016. A strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release. The Hamilton, Ontario duo have racked up four albums since they formed in 1999, including their 2004 debut Last Exit and 2006’s So This Is Goodbye, two rapturous – and rapturously received – records that were as poignant as they were impeccably produced, and prefigured Album: ‘Big Black Coat’ the digital R&B so beloved of many an artist in the last few years. • Multiculturalism and the De-Politicization of Blackness in Canada: the Case of Flow 93.5 Fm
MULTICULTURALISM AND THE DE-POLITICIZATION OF BLACKNESS IN CANADA: THE CASE OF FLOW 93.5 FM by Kisrene McKenzie A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto © Copyright by Kisrene McKenzie 2009 MULTICULTURALISM AND THE DE-POLITICIZATION OF BLACKNESS IN CANADA: THE CASE OF FLOW 93.5 FM Master of Arts 2009 Kisrene McKenzie Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education University of Toronto Abstract This thesis presents a case study of Canada‟s first Black owned radio station, FLOW 93.5 FM, to demonstrate how official multiculturalism, in its formulation and implementation, negates Canada‟s history of slavery and racial inequality. As a response to diversity, multiculturalism shifts the focus away from racial inequality to cultural difference. Consequently, Black self-determination is unauthorized. By investigating FLOW‟s radio license applications, programming and advertisements, this thesis reveals just how the vision of a Black focus radio station dissolved in order to fit the practical and ideological framework of multiculturalism so that Blackness could be easily commodified. This thesis concludes that FLOW is not a Black radio station but instead is a multicultural radio station – one that specifically markets a de-politicized Blackness. As a result, multiculturalism poses serious consequences for imagining and engaging with Blackness as a politics that may address the needs of Black communities in Canada. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I extend my deepest gratitude to my thesis supervisor, Dr. Sherene Razack, for her guidance, constant support, encouragement and initial interest in my thesis topic.

There were three main schools: the "ebbing and flowing" style of post-rock (as in God Speed You Black Emperor and Mogwai), the brainy jazz-influenced style of post-rock (Tortoise), and the original style of post-rock, that was simply a form of non-linear instrumental music (Slint, Don Caballero). Prog-rock, by comparison, tended to be more exuberant (if not bombastic) and more about the technical skills of the musicians. Ambient, noise, glitch and world music all contributed to further confuse the tongue of post-rock. Post-rock in Chicago TM, ®, Copyright © 2008 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. Aesthetically speaking, being "post" something was the artistic manifesto of many in the 2000s. It was basically a generalization of post-modernism: not only pushing the boundaries of existing styles, but reinventing, reinterpreting, recontextualizing them and, ultimately, dismantling them. Chicago's school of post-rock was still alive and kicking in the 2000s, although its focus and scope was rapidly shifting towards the digital soundscape.

A Welcome Welcome to the 20th annual SummerWorks Theatre Festival. Toronto’s Indie Theatre and Arts Festival. Over the past three years, SummerWorks has evolved from an indie-theatre festival to an indie-arts festival. I believe that it’s important to continue to explore the necessity and relevance of the theatrical form: how can it contribute, reflect and parallel the world we’re living in? I became interested in what happens to the form when directly paralleled with other forms. Call it a social experi- ment, if you will – a laboratory on relevance and learning. Where do our forms intersect, and how can we use this to our advantage? We’ve been really excited by the results of this evolution, and this year’s Festival continues to build on these principles. Our Theatre line-up is very exciting. The work is strong, diverse, and brave. We also welcome four very impressive shows from outside Ontario in our National Series. See them all if you can. You won’t be disappointed. What are the ingredients that enable certain musicians to fill rooms and create that rare, emotional electricity? There are some obvious answers like: alcohol and rowdy behaviour – but there are also layers to this question that are connected to the visceral nature of the form. This year’s Music Series is the best yet. I hope you’ll take it in. The new Performance Bar brings three different art forms together on the same stage nightly over the course of the Festival. The glue? The National Theatre of the World.
