  • The Greater Antilles
PART I The Greater Antilles Jamaica: The Wages of Love chapter 1 BRANDING on tv, it looked like the others were jogging. Halfway through the Olympic 100-meter final, Usain Bolt— Jamaican hero, fastest man in the world, performing in London before eighty thousand flashbulb-popping fans— pulled away. At six-foot- five, hurtling down the tile- red track, Bolt stretched his stride in a way none of his rivals— compact, muscular men all— could match. One moment, eight Lycra- clad figures were sprinting in a pack. Then there was one: long legs churning, face calm. In Beijing four years before, he’d turned this race, as one oft-quoted account had it, into “a palette on which an emerging and transcendent talent could splash his greatness.”1 Slap- ping his chest before the line, exulting as he crossed— Bolt charmed the world with his brash joie de vivre. Now, as he pulled away, TV replays caught him glancing at the stadium clock: in Beijing, he’d entered his- tory; here, he wanted to make it. And so he did. The clock showed the time— a new Olympic record. And Jamaica’s pride, his nation’s black, yellow, and green flag draped over his broad back, grinned and danced as he circled the stadium, soaking up its warm lights’ love. For most of the few hundred million around the globe watching on TV, the scene showed what the Olympic Games, Visa-sponsored cor- porate dross aside, could still be. Here was a beautiful human, from a little nation, moving with supernal grace on the world stage.

Perth Music Interviews Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Amber Flynn (Rabbit Island) Sean O’Neill (Hang on Saint Christopher) Bill Darby David Craddock (Davey Craddock and the Spectacles) Scott Tomlinson (Kill Teen Angst) Thomas Mathieson (Mathas) Joe Bludge (The Painkillers) Tracey Read (The Wine Dark Sea) Rob Schifferli (The Leap Year) Chris Cobilis Andy Blaikie by Benedict Moleta December 2011 This collection of interviews was put together over the course of 2011. Some of these people have been involved in music for ten years or more, others not so long. The idea was to discuss background and development, as well as current and long-term musical projects. Benedict Moleta [email protected] Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Were you born in Perth ? Yeah, I was born in Mt Lawley. You've been working on a music documentary for a while now, what's it about ? I started shooting footage mid 2008. I'm making a feature documentary about a bunch of bands over a period of time, it's an unscientific longitudinal study of sorts. It's a long process because I want to make an observational documentary with the narrative structure of a fiction film. I'm trying to capture a coming of age cliché but character arcs take a lot longer in real life. I remember reading once that rites of passage are good things to structure narratives around, so that's what I'm going to do, who am I to argue with a text book? Fair call. I guess one of the characteristics of bands developing or "coming of age" is that things can emerge, change, pass away and be reconfigured quickly.

Great Southern Nights is a NSW Government initiative delivered by its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) to support the recovery of the live music, entertainment and hospitality industries. • The Mixtape: a Case Study in Emancipatory Journalism
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE MIXTAPE: A CASE STUDY IN EMANCIPATORY JOURNALISM Jared A. Ball, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Directed By: Dr. Katherine McAdams Associate Professor Philip Merrill College of Journalism Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies During the 1970s the rap music mixtape developed alongside hip-hop as an underground method of mass communication. Initially created by disc-jockeys in an era prior to popular “urban” radio and video formats, these mixtapes represented an alternative, circumventing traditional mass medium. However, as hip-hop has come under increasing corporate control within a larger consolidated media ownership environment, so too has the mixtape had to face the challenge of maintaining its autonomy. This media ownership consolidation, vertically and horizontally integrated, has facilitated further colonial control over African America and has exposed as myth notions of democratizing media in an undemocratic society. Acknowledging a colonial relationship the writer created FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show where the mixtape becomes both a source of free cultural expression and an anti-colonial emancipatory journalism developed as a “Third World” response to the needs of postcolonial nation-building. This dissertation explores the contemporary colonizing effects of media consolidation, cultural industry function, and copyright ownership, concluding that the development of an underground press that recognizes the tremendous disparities in advanced technological access (the “digital divide”) appears to be the only viable alternative. The potential of the mixtape to serve as a source of emancipatory journalism is studied via a three-pronged methodological approach: 1) An explication of literature and theory related to the history of and contemporary need for resistance media, 2) an analysis of the mixtape as a potential underground mass press and 3) three focus group reactions to the mixtape as resistance media, specifically, the case study of the writer’s own FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show.

  • Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award!
MEDIA RELEASE 28 November 2018 Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award! Scott Maxwell from Grant High School in Mount Gambier is the winner of the 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year. The win was announced at the star-studded ARIA Awards, held at The Star in Sydney. The ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award is run in partnership with leading arts education organisation, The Song Room and sponsored by Telstra. It’s been a wild ride for Scott, who was selected from hundreds of submissions. His inclusion as an official ARIA Nominee was celebrated with a surprise visit by Guy Sebastian, who made the trip to Grant High School in October and sang his hit song Battle Scars with students from the music program. Since then, four nominees from across Australia have been put to a public vote, with tens of thousands from around the country showing their support for their favourite music educator. ‘Maxi’ as he is affectionately known, has transformed the music program at Grant High since he took over in 2009. There are now double the amount of music programs offered at the school, and triple the number of students enrolled in the music program. Scott’s success is attributed to his aspiration to make as many music genres accessible as possible, to adapting his teaching to suit the needs of his students, and to placing an emphasis on creating opportunities for public performances. His approach has seen the cohort at Grant High School thrive. What started as small live shows in the school canteen at lunch time, has quickly grown to full community festivals for students to perform under Scott’s guidance.
