Semi Final Competition:

David A. Brown, Q.C., (Lead Judge) Counsel, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, LLP Former Chairman, Ontario Securities Commission

David Brown has returned to Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP as Counsel following seven years as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Securities Commission.

In 2007, he was appointed by the Canadian Government to investigate the RCMP's handling of complaints about alleged pension and insurance plan improprieties. Subsequently, he was appointed to Chair a Task Force to examine issues of culture and governance within the RCMP.

David is a member of the Public Interest Oversight Board, an international body formed to oversee the standards- setting and public interest activities of the International Federation of Accountants.

In addition to serving on a number of boards and advisory committees, he is chair of the Governance and Leadership Council of the Ontario Hospital Association and is Chair of the Public Policy Forum.

David received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Carleton University and his LL.B from the University of Toronto. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1984, was awarded an honourary doctorate of laws from McMaster University in 2005, and was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2009.

Anne-Marie Applin Founder & President Applin Marketing and Communications

Anne-Marie Applin is the founder and president of Applin Marketing and Communications, a Toronto-based solutions provider, specializing in strategic planning and integrated design, development, and implementation. The company's client-list spans a diverse spectrum of industries in Canada and abroad, in financial services, pharmaceutical, consumer packaged goods, health care, hospitality and tourism, arts and culture, and education.

Ms. Applin is deeply committed to the arts, culture, health and education. She has been involved with the International Bach Festival in Toronto since its inception and serves as president and chair of the executive committee. She is also a member of the board for the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and a director of the Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Centre at the University Health Network, Toronto.

Having served six years on the TVOntario (OECA) board of directors, Ms. Applin now chairs its Strategic Planning and Priorities Committee, and is a Past President of the TVOntario Foundation. She is a past governor of the University of Toronto and has held committee posts for such organizations as the Advertising Review Board of Ontario, the Canada-China Business Council and the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.

Anne-Marie is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the University of Toronto's Arbor Award. She is a past governor of the University of Toronto and has held board and/or committee posts for such organizations as the Advertising Review Board of Ontario, the Canada-China Business Council, and the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.

Aubrey Dan Founder and President Dancap Private Equity Inc., Dancap Global Asset Management, Dancap Productions Inc.

Aubrey Dan is a Canadian businessman, Tony-Award® winning producer (), impresario and philanthropist.

Mr. Dan began his career with Novopharm Limited, where he became Director of Sales, and was appointed to run its Wampole Canada subsidiary, an herbal supplement and vitamin manufacturer.

Dan founded Dancap Private Equity, a private firm that invests its own funds from a $50 million investment base in mid-market Canadian businesses, and Dancap Global Asset Management, which focuses on both traditional assets (public equities, fixed income and real estate) and alternative assets (private equity, private debt, infrastructure, and commodities).

In 2007 Dan launched Dancap Productions with an inaugural season that included , The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 3 Mo Divas, successful revivals of beloved shows like as well as presentations Of and the Tony Award®-winning .

Aubrey and his wife Marla are strong supporters of health and educational charities, including Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario, and Baycrest Centre Foundation.

Dan received an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree (honoris causa) from Assumption University in 2008. He is a member of the Young President's Association (YPO) Ontario Chapter and Institute of Private Investors (IPI).

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Dan graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in Administrative and Commercial studies.

Susan Kirwin Chase Producer Business News Network (BNN)

At the Business News Network (BNN), Susan Kirwin is Chase Producer for the Commodities Show and The Pitch.

Susan played a key role in launching The Pitch, where entrepreneurs sell their business ideas to a panel of venture capitalists on live television.

Prior joining BNN, Susan spent four years as a reporter for The Northern Miner, a Toronto-based newspaper that sent her to mining projects around the world. She has reported for several other publications including the National Post, the London Free Press and the Woodstock Sentinel-Review.

Susan attended Concordia University’s graduate journalism program and has an Honours BA in Business Communications from Brock University. She has also completed the Canadian Securities Course and the Commodities as Investments course.

Katherine Smalley Founder and President Allied Capital Corporation

Katherine Smalley is Founder and President of Allied Capital Corporation, a boutique investment bank, registered as an Exempt Market Dealer with the Ontario Securities Commission, to provide corporate finance services to public and private growth companies in Canada and the emerging markets. Allied Capital Corporation arranges private placements in the $5 to $100 million range for Canadian and international companies in many industries including manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, financial services, technology and shipping.

Prior to founding Allied Capital, Ms. Smalley was a Producer and Director for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, particularly of the award-winning, CBC primetime documentary series “Man Alive”. She produced and directed a number of other CBC documentaries on subjects ranging from children in war, to the politics of religion in the former Soviet Union, to a series on the arts with orchestral scores by Harry Freedman. Additionally, she produced and directed documentaries for the UN Human Settlements Conference and a thirtieth anniversary special on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for the CBC and the United Nations.

Her documentaries have won numerous awards including Gabriel Award for Best Documentary, San Francisco Jury Award, Columbus Documentary Award, and the New York International Film Award.

Ms. Smalley is also active as a Director or Adviser for a number of charities including the Order of St. Lazarus, Healing Hands India, Ontario Arts Foundation, Soundstreams Canada, Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs, and Via Salzburg Chamber Orchestra.

Katherine holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University, Underwriting and Securities Certificates from the Canadian Securities Institute, and a French Language Certificate from Université Laval.

Final Competition:

Hon. Mr. Justice Michael H. Tulloch (Lead Judge) Ontario Superior Court of Justice

The Honourable Mr. Justice Michael H. Tulloch is a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Brampton, Ontario and presides within the Central West Region of Ontario.

He was appointed an Assistant Crown Attorney in 1991 where he worked both in Peel and Toronto. In 1995, Justice Tulloch entered private practice, specializing in criminal law, and continued in this practice until his appointment to the Bench in 2003.

While in private practice, Justice Tulloch was also appointed a special prosecuting agent with the Federal Department of Justice. He also participated in a number of commissions including the Ontario Government Review on Civilian Oversight on Policing, the Review of the Ontario Legal Aid Plan, and the Criminal Code Review conducted by the Federal Attorney General and the Minister of Justice.

In 2006, Mr. Justice Tulloch was asked by the Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School to chair a Review Panel of the Law School’s Admissions Policy, after which the majority of the panel’s recommendations were accepted and implemented by the Law School.

Justice Tulloch is actively involved in post secondary education as well as numerous community organizations. He is Distinguish Research Fellow with the Centre of Law and Policy, an Academic Fellow of McLaughlin College, York University, a member of the Advisory Board to the Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Osgoode Society on Legal History.

Mr. Justice Tulloch is also the recipient of an Honourary Doctors of Laws Degree from the University of Guelph.

Gerald D. Courage Chairman and Partner Miller Thomson LLP

Gerald Courage is National Chairman and Tax Partner at Miller Thomson, LLP, and practices the full range of taxation and tax related matters, with a primary focus on corporate tax.

With a tax law background that spans over 30 years, he has provided advice on domestic and international tax issues to a number of significant public and private businesses, based in Canada and abroad, across a wide range of industries.

Mr. Courage has particular expertise in the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, corporate finance and business succession planning.

He is a former lecturer in taxation and commercial law at the University of Toronto Law School.

Mr. Courage is a frequent speaker and Chairperson at numerous tax conferences, including Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Bar Association (Ontario), Canadian Tax Foundation, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, Canadian lnstitute and Lexium.

Gerald holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto, an LL.B. from Queen’s University, and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School.

Garry Foster Vice-Chair Deloitte & Touche LLP

Garry Foster is the Vice Chair of Deloitte & Touche LLP in Canada. With over 30 years of experience in public accounting, 25 of those years as a partner, he is a leader in the area of Board Governance, and completed the Institute of Corporate Directors program in March 2008.

His experience includes advising companies on governance, merger, acquisition and financing activities as well as providing accounting, tax and business advisory services.

From 1998 to 2006 Garry led Deloitte’s Canadian Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) practice. He is a member of the Deloitte Canada Board of Directors, currently chairs the Compensation Committee, and is the past chair of the Governance and Succession Planning Committees. He also represents the Canadian firm on the Deloitte US Board of Directors.

Garry is very active in community affairs and is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Baycrest Foundation.

Krystyna (Krys) Hoeg Corporate Director

Krystyna Hoeg is a Corporate Director for a number of leading Canadian public and private corporations including: Sun Life Financial (current Management Resources Committee chair), Shoppers Drug Mart (current Governance and Nomination Committee chair), Imperial Oil (current Executive Resources Committee chair) Canadian Pacific Railway, Ganong Chocolates (current Audit Committee chair) and Samuel, Son & Co. (current Human Resources Committee chair). She also sits on the board of Toronto East General Hospital and chairs their Governance Committee.

Prior to her retirement from corporate management, Ms. Hoeg was President and CEO of Corby Distilleries Limited, a publicly traded Canadian company, dominant in the Canadian spirits and wine industry. Krystyna held various senior financial positions within Hiram Walker Limited and Allied Domecq PLC, including Senior VP - Finance (The Americas) before taking on the management lead of Corby.

Krys is a Chartered Accountant and holds degrees from McMaster University and the University of Windsor.

Brendan Moore Vice Chairman Global VAT Ryan ULC

Brendan Moore is Vice Chairman Global VAT, Ryan ULC, a specialty provider of value-added tax services to clients across all industry sectors.

Brendan is the 2004 recipient of the Canadian Small Business Association “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award.

He is active in the communities in which he lives and works. An advocate for charitable and professional organizations, Mr. Moore’s memberships and affiliations include the Institute of Professionals in Taxation, Young Presidents Organization, and the Financial Executives International Canada in which he has been an active member and National Sponsor since 2002.

Brendan served as Campaign Chair and United Way of Oakville Board Member from 2005-2007 and Professional Chair from 2002-2005.
