Logano Benefits from Martins Failed Fuel Gamble at Michigan
Takes 3rd Career Sprint Cup Series win
Hello Race fans, I’m Buddy Long. And welcome to this weeks edition of NASCAR News.
Joey Logano led 52 of the 200 laps on Sunday, breaking a 44 race winless drought in winning Sundays Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. After being hounded by Kurt Busch early in the day, then Kevin Harvick midway through the event, Logano took advantage of Mark Martins failed fuel gamble, leading the final few laps enroute to his 3rd career Sprint Cup victory. The win also pulls Logano within 1 spot of a wildcard position in the Chase with just 3 races left to determine the 12 car field for this years championship. Harvick came home second, followed by Busch, Paul Menard, and Clint Bowyer. Points leader Jimmie Johnson suffered a blown engine early in the event, also suffering a huge loss in his points lead, as the series heads to Bristol, Tennessee this Saturday night. Here’s a look at the updated standings.
1 Jimmie Johnson
2 Clint Bowyer -41
3 Carl Edwards -51
4 Kevin Harvick -64
5 Kyle Busch -107
6 Matt Kenseth -125
7 Dale Earnhardt Jr -134
8 Brad Keselowski -146
9 Kurt Busch -148
10 Greg Biffle -150
Wildcard Sports: Kasey Kahne, Martin Truex Jr
As mentioned, the series heads to Bristol, Tennessee this Saturday Night for the Irwin Tools Night Race.
Stewart done for the year:
As expected, 3- time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a broken right tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash August 5 in Iowa. Stewart is expected to return to the car in time for Pre Season testing in January of 2014.
For the balance of the season, Mark Martin will drive the Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy this weekend at Bristol as well as 11 other races for the 2013 season. Austin Dillon, who subbed for Stewart this past weekend at Michigan, will drive the car at Talladega Superspeedway Oct 18-20. The move to put Martin in the car comes just 1 week following the announcement that Brian Vickers would drive the Aarons Dream Machine for Michael Waltrip Racing fulltime in 2014. Martin, who shares the ride with Vickers on a part time basis, came within 3 laps from winning Sundays Pure Michigan 400, when a gamble on stretching the fuel mileage sputtered, giving Joey Logano the chance to win his third career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
