Pher Sutherland-led political thriller Appointed Survivor is back in action after a too-long absence. The unceremonious cancellation of the ABC show and the rescue of Netflix delayed season 3 release from last fall to today. But who cares about a break? There's a new season of Designated Survivor right now, and there's no week-long wait between episodes! But since so much time has passed since the Season 2 finale, and since designated Survivor weaves a complex web of events, we believe that a quick summary is in order. If you know where we left President Kirkman and his staff, we're here to deliver you at the right time. Once you get this crash course on designated Survivor Season 2, you'll be ready to take on the twists of season 3, currently on Netflix. What happened at the end of the designated season of Survivor 2? It's been a tough season for President Kirkman (Sutherland). After the death of his wife Alex (Natasha McElhon, who left the show to star in the short-lived drama astronaut Hulu The First), Kirkman had to deal with a lot of intrigue and investigations that threatened him face-to-face with impeachment. Special Prosecutor Ethan West (Michael J. Fox) found a lot of dirt on a close associate of President Kirkman Hannah Wells (Maggie) and the attorney general (Bruce Davison) was close to knocking down the hammer. It happened at a terrible time (as if there was ever a good time to be charged with crimes) because independent Kirkman was forced to choose between political parties in order to seek re-election. Photo: Netflix Making a Bad Situation Even Worse, U.S. Territory Taurasi (which is not real, don't worry looking for hotels) voted for independence and then got slammed by a tsunami with Kirkman's spokesman Seth Wright (Kal Penn) and political director Lyor Boone (Paulo Costanzo) on the island! Kirkman pulled out all the stops to get an aide sent to Taurasi, crossing political boundaries and stepping on all feet to save the people in need. He didn't win him any new fans in Congress, but he saved a lot of lives. It was then that President Kirkman made his big statement: he is running for re-election and remains independent so that he can act in the interests of the American people without being pushed and pulled out by either political party. And oddly enough, he achieved this decision thanks to Ethan who confessed, confessed, The president that of all he interacted with in Washington, Kirkman is the only guy without an agenda. The most recent shot of Season 2 was the president taking the call with the attorney general. What happened to the rest of the cast at the end of the nominated season of Survivor 2? Well, they're all very surprised by Kirkman's announcement, that's for sure! As far as Kirkman's staff goes, Aaron Shore (Adan Canto), Emily Rhodes (Italy Ricci), and Seth Wright are the only majors to be back for Season 3. When we saw the three of them, Shore and Rhodes were in Washington while Wright was still on Taurasi with Boone. Emily, recovering from a gunshot wound as well as several risky decisions, tried to quit her job as a special counsel, but Kirkman did not even allow the word to come out of her mouth. Photo another Netflix operative Kirkman, secret agent Hannah Wells, went on a mission to save the daughter of MI6 agent Rennett Amy from the murder of dangerous Russian operative Valeria. Wells succeeded in her mission, but didn't like what she found on the flash drive: footage of Emily meeting with and taking a file from Valeria! That's where we left the cast before season 3, and we already know that a few characters aren't making the leap from ABC to Netflix. Lamonica Garrett, who played Secret Service officer Mike Ritter, is out. It also looks like Paulo Costanzo and zoe McLellan didn't make the cut either, meaning we may have seen the last Boone and Kendra Daynes. New characters this season include a new chief of staff played by Anthony Edwards; Lauren Holly plays his wife. Julie White will play Kirkman's campaign manager, and Elena Tovar will join the cast as the White House's director of social innovation. Is there any of this?
