- 3 - A. Korean Course Korean course will be 64 hours in total during the program. You will learn practical korean language consisting speaking, reading, and writing. You will start to learn basic and essential words for basic conversation. It surely is short to time for you to learn korean but the korean teacher will try her best to teach you practical korean which is helpful for you to stay in korea. Details of korean language course will be explained in the first day of korean course.

- 6 - C. Korean Cultural Field Trip Gyeong Ju Bulgukas(July 3)

The construction of Bulguksa Temple was begun by Gim Daeseong in 751 A.D., during the reign of King Gyeongdeok, and was completed in 774 A.D during the reign of King Hyegong. Its construction was begun and completed parallel with that of .

The stone structures are marvelously constructed, using long and short stones in the foundations, cylindrical stones for pillars and balustrades, and various other well-hewn stones. Beholders stand in awed admiration of the delicacy, majesty, and lightness of the finely carved stone pillars and balustrades of Yeonhwagyo (Lotus Flower Bridge) and Chilbogyo (Seven Treasures Bridge). The 8.2-meter tall three-tiered stupa known as Seokgatap (Sakyamuni Pagoda), with its well-proportioned sections creating an overall balance, possesses a simple and stately beauty. The famous stupa, Dabotap (Pagoda of Many Treasures), which stands 10.4 meters high on top of a rectangular base, is constructed of many pieces of stone material connected with joints like those seen in wooden architecture. It is highly praised for its elaborate and ornate beauty, unique structure, and creative artistry.

Bulguksa Temple has been classified by the government as Historic and Scenic Site No. 1. Some of its important cultural properties include Dabotap (National Treasure No. 20), Seokgatap (National Treasure No. 21), Cheongungyo and Baegungyo (National Treasure No. 23), Yeonhwagyo and Chilbogyo (National Treasure No. 22), Geumdong Amita Yeoraejwasang, the seated gilt-bronze Amitabha Buddha (National Treasure No. 27), and Birojanabul, the seated gilt-bronze Vairocana Buddha (National Treasure No. 26). In December 1995, Bulguksa Temple was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with Seokguram Grotto.

Daegu City Tour(July 8) Bullodong Tomb Park The tombs at the Bullo-dong Tomb Park have been Preserved in their original shapes, which makes them a valuable representation Of what the ancient Daegu basin was like. Built in the 5th or 6th century, they are estimated to be the tombs of the ruling powers in this area. About 214 tombs with a clear appearance are restored to their original form

Bangjja Yugi Museum Bangjja is a vessel made by pounding melted brass. Bangjja yugi museum is the nation’s only brassware-speciallized Museum. Quality brassware made by brassware specialist Lee Bong-ju is on display. Web page : http://artcenter.daegu.go.kr/bangjja Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum is Korea's first bronzeware-specialized museum built to preserve the Bangjja Yugi, a traditional cultural property. It also aims to hand down its manufacturing technology

- 7 - to posterity so that the excellence of traditional Korean cultural assets may continue to be presented, and the development of local culture will be promoted. The Museum houses 1,489 items of Yugi in 275 types donated without compensation by Mr. LEE Bong-ju, who made and collected Yugi. Artisan LEE Bong-ju was designated by the central government in 1983 as the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 77. It is rare to find countries in the world that preserve Yugi manufacturing technology. Under these circumstances, the Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum will do its best in building diverse cultural contents with IT and CT integrated in order to meet the age of cultural competition in the 21st century. This will help to attract the attention of new generations, and motivate them to foster cultural infrastructures unique to this area.

Donghwasa Temple

Donghwasa is a time-honored Buddhist temple, which was built by Priest Geukdal-hwasang in 493 of the Dynasty. It is located in the valley of Dohak-dong below Mt. Palgong. On the premises of the temple, a main worshipping hall, and an enormous statue of a Stone Budda standing up high are available for followers of Buddhism. To the east of the temple, Geumdangam Hermitage stands as a separate block. There are also treasures such as the original gate pillar holding temple flag(Treasure No. 254), a stone sarira stupa(Treasure No.601) and a gently smiling buddha relief 9Treasure No.243.

Gwang-Seok Kim street

GwangSeok Kim was a memorial singer who sang a lot of songs with a gentle voice, He was born and lived Bangcheon Market Daebong-dong in Daegu. Bancheon Market was one of the 3 major traditional markets and is transforming into A space

- 8 - where culture and art coexist in harmony. Visitors can enjoy walking down the “Road of Kim Gwang-seok, the deceased popular Korean pop singer” which is decorated with a painted mural wall. There are handicraft shops for hands-on experience in making craft. Daegu National Museum The exhibits are on display under the categories of archeology, art, and folk customs. Diverse cultural programs, and cultural and artistic events are also held. Opened in 1994, Daegu National Museum is composed of three exhibition halls and one event hall. The museum exhibits about 1,300 historical relics collected in the Yeongnam region. Folklore Hall exhibits replicas of traditional houses and other artifacts of Yeongnam which helps visitors better understand the regions lifestyle, religion, society, etc.

Pusan Tour(July 18) Taejongdae

Close your eyes and picture the waves, wind and feel the smell the aroma of the ocean coming from the white spray. Then open your eyes and you will be enraptured by the exquisite scenery of Taejongdae. Taejongdae, a park located at the southern end of Yongdo Island, commands magnificent views. The name Taejongdae comes from the fact that King Taejong Muyol of the Shilla Dynasty was infatuated with this scenery and made frequent visits to this area. This location is the closest point to the Japanese island of Tsushima, which you can see from Taejongdae on a fine day At this hot spring, relax your mind and body in the natural spring water, while you enjoy an unobstructed view of Taejongdae, the mountains and the ocean. Different types of bath are available here, including the Health Bath, the Pyramid Bath and the Outdoor Bath This is the most important regional festival of Yeongdo, at which you can enjoy the pleasures of autumn in Yeongdo. It offers various cultural and art programs, along with many performing events, in the Taejongdae and Yeongdo Bridge areas Taejongdae consists of Deungdae Jagalmadang, Taewon Jagalmadang and Gamji Jagalmadang. In Gamji Jagalmadang, there is a tiny village of tents, each of which is a restaurant serving a variety

- 9 - of seafood such as sea squirt, sea cucumber, common octopus and spoon warm. You can enjoy the dishes served there while savoring the aroma of the sea

Jagalchi Market

Jagalchi Gomjangeo Golmok In a small alley at the edge of Jagalchi Market, are a number of pojangmacha (mobile cart bars) serving cooked sea eel. Although each of the carts has a small space for its customers, the owners of the carts are generous. The sea eel roasted over burning coal briquettes is particularly delicious.

Andong (July 23) Hahoe Villege The is a traditional village from the Dynasty. The village is a valuable part of Korean culture because it preserves Joseon period-style architecture, folk traditions, valuable books, and old tradition of clan-based villages.

The village maintains old architectural styles that have been lost because of rapid modernization and development in . Aristocratic tile-roofed residences and thatched-roof servants' homes preserve the architectural styles of the Joseon Dynasty. Wonjijeongsa Pavilion and Byeongsan Confucian School are two notable structures in the village. The village has preserved the shamanist rite of Byeolsin-gut and preserved Hahoe masks used in the Hahoe Mask Dance. Another rite still practiced is the Jeulbul Nori which uses strings of fireworks fired at the base of the Buyongdae Cliff. The village was listed by the South Korea government as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, along with Yangdong Folk Village.

Andong Byeoung San

The ByeongsanSeowon is a seowon(private academy) located in the neighborhood of

- 10 - Byeongsan-dong, Yecheon-myeon in the city of Andong, North Gyeongsang-do, South Korea. Seowon is a type of local academy during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). It was first established as Jondeoksa by local Confucian scholars especially Jeong Gyeong-se in 1613, the fifth years of King Gwanghaegun's reign, to commemorate the scholarly achievement and virtue of the notable Confucian scholar and politician Yu Seong-ryong. The predecessor of the seowon was Pungak Seodang which was an educational institution located in Pungsan to teach the Pungsan Yu clan during the Goryeo period. Yu Seong-ryong moved the seodang to the current place in 1572.

2. What KMCU provide you

A. Expense of all the Korean language class, cultural program, and field trips.

B. Domitory - 1 room for 2 persons, toilet, 2 beds, refrigerator, 2desks, 2 cabinets, kitchen room and laundry, internet etc. 1) Femle dormitory locates near Institute of international Education center in the campus 2) Male dormitory locates out of the campus, near KMCU(3minutes distance by feet)

C. KMCU buddies – Several KMCU student buddies will help your program and korean life during your staying in KMCU

D. Meals - We provide you meal expense by cash. It will be comfortable for you to select and buy your own meal. There are many food courts and groceries in and out of the campus. - 7,000Won(about 4.8 Euros) for 1 meal (Big-Mac Set Menu costs about 5,000~6000won in korea) - We will give you a week meal expense(about 90 Euros) every monday. - The meal in the field trips will be provided by KMCU

E. Transportation Card(Bus, Metro) - We provide you a transportation card(Bus and Metro, rechargeable card) for each person. - About 50,000Won(about 34 Euros) will be charged, 1 time bus or Metro fee is 1,100Won (About 40~45 times you can take) - After you spend all the expenses in the card, you can recharge in Daegu Bank or Recharge stores. We don’t provide you recharge expenses.

- 11 - 3. GoodtoKnow before Departure

A. Daegu, Korea Climate(July and August) - The day you arrive in Korea will be rainy season(monsoon season). This season continues until middle of July. You would better prepare umbrella or raincoat. - After the rainy season, hot and humid summer is waiting for you. Average temperature will be 33℃ in July, over 35℃ in August. You should prepare enough summer clothes. - Daegu city is the hottest city in Korea.

B. Security in Korean - You will experience Korea is a safe country. Korea has good security system and people are moderate and friendly.

C. Dormitory Rules - Please comply with Curfew. All students must come back until 11pm. - Drinking alcohol and Smoking is not allowed inside of Dormitory building. (Most of buildings are non-smoking area in korea. If you smokes, use smoking area) - Please keep clean and pleasant condition with your dorm room - Please refrain from any acting that disturbs the other residents. - One of the KMCU buddy will be stay in dorm at night, so if you face emergency situation or need any help, please get help from the buddy.
