Ingram Follow this and additional works at: https://research.library.fordham.edu/environ_2015 Live From New York, It’s Environmental Science! Climate Change Communication in Late-Night Comedy Television Serena A. Ingram Abstract This thesis explores why traditional climate change communication often fails in the mainstream news media and how late-night comedy television circumvents these problems. These late-night shows provide humorous news coverage that holds politicians and the press accountable for enabling denialist rhetoric. The first chapter sources data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication to outline the issues of climate change and public understanding of climate science. The second chapter describes how rhetorical analysis can identify effective or ineffective climate communication strategies. It also discusses the emotional factors that surround climate change, and how humor strengthens communication and unifies individuals toward a common goal. The third chapter addresses the issue of politically spun news and information biases in climate reporting. It details how political figures influence news coverage of climate change and spin the news to reinforce their own agendas. The fourth chapter provides examples and analysis of climate change related segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.” The fifth chapter applies the principles of late-night comedy and climate change communication to potential government policy and more mainstream television news.

IRONIC FEMINISM: RHETORICAL CRITIQUE IN SATIRICAL NEWS A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Kathy Elrick December 2016 Accepted by Dr. David Blakesley, Committee Chair Dr. Jeff Love Dr. Brandon Turner Dr. Victor J. Vitanza ABSTRACT Ironic Feminism: Rhetorical Critique in Satirical News aims to offer another perspective and style toward feminist theories of public discourse through satire. This study develops a model of ironist feminism to approach limitations of hegemonic language for women and minorities in U.S. public discourse. The model is built upon irony as a mode of perspective, and as a function in language, to ferret out and address political norms in dominant language. In comedy and satire, irony subverts dominant language for a laugh; concepts of irony and its relation to comedy situate the study’s focus on rhetorical contributions in joke telling. How are jokes crafted? Who crafts them? What is the motivation behind crafting them? To expand upon these questions, the study analyzes examples of a select group of popular U.S.

Topical Monologue Jokes On Donuts Featuring Dr. Fauci’s Face: Due to the desperate need for facts and science that’s sweeping the Nation in this Coronavirus time, Dr. Fauci is becoming something of a hero. In fact, CNN reported that donuts featuring Dr. Fauci’s face are becoming a hit in NYC…[graphic]: Stephen Colbert: Donuts? New York—you couldn’t think of a healthier food for one second while we’re all trying to stay healthy and improve our immune systems? You couldn’t try carving Dr. Fauci’s face into an eggplant? [Colbert NY accent]: “In honor of this man that provided us with medical truth that ultimately saved the nation from entirely dying out from a deadly virus, here’s some diabetes!" Trevor Noah: People are so into Dr. Fauci right now, it’s crazy. He’s going to become our new mascot, I’m telling you. Like instead of the Easter Bunny, it’ll just be Dr. Fauci sneaking around your house, laying chocolate eggs with his face on them everywhere for you to find. Luckily Christmas will pretty much just be the same: an old white man as the bearer of good things. Fauci isn’t fat like Santa Claus, but after a few of those donuts with his face on them… On Drake’s kid: Trevor Noah: Drake has finally revealed to the public a picture of his kid on social media. [graphic] Here he is: Adonis Graham. Yes, Drake named his kid Adonis—after the mortal that had sex with Aphrodite. Aphrodite! Goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure! ….I see what you’re doing here, Drake.

United States Attorney Southern District of New York FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: U.S. ATTORNEY'S OFFICE SEPTEMBER 15, 2011 ELLEN DAVIS, CARLY SULLIVAN, JERIKA RICHARDSON PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE (212) 637-2600 MANHATTAN U.S. ATTORNEY SETTLES CIVIL RIGHTS LAWSUIT AGAINST GRAMERCY PARK HOTEL PREET BHARARA, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that the United States has filed, and simultaneously settled, a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging that the owners and operators of the GRAMERCY PARK HOTEL, a historic, luxury hotel in Manhattan, discriminated against persons with disabilities and repeatedly violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ("ADA"). As part of the settlement, the hotel owner, GPH MANAGEMENT, LLC, and operator, RFR HOTEL GROUP, LLC, agreed to remove barriers that impeded the accessibility of the hotel, to change hotel policies to benefit persons with disabilities, and to pay penalties. The settlement agreement, in the form of a consent decree, was approved late yesterday by U.S. District Judge ROBERT W. SWEET. Manhattan U.S. Attorney PREET BHARARA stated: "New York City hosts millions of visitors each year, and it is essential that our hotels are open and accessible to all. This agreement helps ensure that individuals with disabilities will have the same access to hotel accommodations that are enjoyed by others." According to the Complaint filed September 7, 2011, in Manhattan federal court: The GRAMERCY PARK HOTEL, located at 2 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, repeatedly violated the ADA and discriminated against persons with disabilities by refusing to accommodate the needs of a guest with a hearing impairment, failing to remove barriers to access, and renovating the hotel in violation of the ADA.

  • Fall Hospitality Report Manhattan 2015
FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT (2015) MANHATTAN FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT MANHATTAN 2015 1 | P a g e FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT (2015) MANHATTAN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY According to the Starr report, Manhattan’s hotel sector has been growing by over 4.0 % since 2010 both by ADR and number of rooms. The demand still far exceeds supply especially for 5 star brands. Early in the hotel recovery in 2011, three star brands grew in number of rooms and ADR initially. As the recovery went into full swing by late 2013, four and five star hotel development continued to outpace three star hotel growth. Global investors are seeking five star hotel product in Manhattan and at $1.0 million up to $2.0 million per key. For instance, Chinese investors bought the Waldorf Astoria and the Baccarat Hotels both at substantially above $1.0 million per key. Manhattan is one of the best hotel markets in the world between growing tourism and inexpensive accommodations compared to other global gateway cities like London, Paris, Moscow, Hong Kong, etc. Any established global hotel brand also requires a presence in Manhattan. In 2014 alone, 4,348 keys were added to Manhattan’s existing 108,592 rooms. Currently, another 14,272 rooms are under construction in the city and about 4000 keys (1/3) are for boutique hotels. As of July 2015, the Manhattan market has approximately 118,000 keys. They are segmented as follows: Currently, there is a 4.0% annual compounded growth rate. Despite this growth, demand for hotel rooms from tourism, conventions, cultural events, and corporate use continues to grow as Manhattan is one of the most desirable locations for all of the above uses especially tourism from Asia and Europe.

Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Dr. Katie Batza Dr. Henry Bial Dr. Sherrie Tucker Dr. Peter Zazzali Date Defended: August 23, 2018 ii The dissertation committee for Rachel E. Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

Crip Kinship: A Political Strategy of People Who Were Deemed Contagious by the Shirtless Putin Alexander Kondakov This article analyzes conditions in which contagious populations have found them- selves in Russia and reviews theories of queer/crip kinship from two perspectives: the theories developed in academic literature, and the conceptualization of queer/crip kinship that may be derived from everyday accounts of people. The latter position is shaped through an analysis of life history interviews with disabled people who identify on the LGBTIQ spectrum in Russia. The Russian context is different from many other geographical locations, but also relates to the more common condition of precar- ity shared under contemporary neoliberal capitalism. Crip kinship is understood as a prominent political strategy that brings new perspectives on our futurities outside of assemblages of oppression and exploitation that able-bodiedness, heterosexism, and misogyny provoke, sustain, and enforce. Keywords: crip / kinship / queer / Russia In 2013, the Russian state passed an Administrative Code statute declaring “non- traditional sexual relations” such as “male homosexual relations, bisexuality, and transgenderism” as contagious and prohibited any Form oF “dissemination” or “propaganda” about such “non-traditional relations.”1 The law implies that sexual relations oF this sort can be transmitted From one body to another and are danger- ous For children because they can plant “non-traditional sexual attitudes” in their psyche, “provoke interest into such relationship,” and make children queer, enlarg- ing the “diseased” population oF the Russian Federation (Federal Law 2013). Within this contagious framing, the law seeks to prevent Russian children from becoming queer, and, in doing so, positions queer liFe as disposable (Evans and Giroux 2015).
