We encourage you to be as generous as your budget allows. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 6:30—7:00 Theatre doors open! It’s Saturday night and we’re all dressed up to go to the movies, or play acting a character from a favorite movie. Visit the Concession Stand and Bar. Peruse the Silent Auction items and gift certificates and put your first bids down on ones that interest you. Please note, items on pink paper will close out fist. 7:00—7:15 FIRST FEATURE SIGN UPS will be open. Go ahead and write your name down for the events of your choice. Note: if there are more people who sign up than spaces alotted, names will be drawn at 7:20 to determine the winning participants and/or couples. 7:15—7:45 Time to make your final bids on SILENT AUCTION, GIFT CERTIFICATES and WISHING WELL items on the PINK SHEETS. They will close out at 7:45. 7:30—7:45 SECOND FEATURE SIGN UPS will be open. Same thing goes for all the Sign Ups—if the event is oversold, names will be drawn at 7:50 to determine the winning participants and/or couples. Don’t forget to continue to browse the Silent Auction to keep tabs on bids for items you have your eye on. Visit the Bar and Concession Stand to keep up your strength. AUCTION BASICS

REGISTRATION: A $5/person admission fee includes a bidder number and snack buffet. Recieve your bidder number at the Check-in Desk. All purchases except for beverages from the Bar must be made with your bidder number.

HOW TO PICK UP YOUR PURCHASES: Auction items and gift certificates diplayed on the tables must be taken home the night of the Auction. Arrangements for larger items may be coordinated with Tim Tilton at 480-620-6835. It is your responsibility to make these arrangements.

BIDDING BUDDIES: If you are unable to attend, we encourage you to locate a friend to bid on your behalf. Make sure they have your method of payment. Another option is to simply write a check to “UUCV” with “Auction 2018” in the memo line, to support our beloved community.

PAYING FOR YOUR PURCHASES: Several Options are available! On the night of the Auction the Check Out Crew will accept cash, VISA, MasterCard, Discover or checks made out to UUCV. 2 OR . . . If you need or want to leave early, NEW this year—ALTERNATE PAYMENT AUTHORIZATION FORM. Fill out a form the night of the Auction at Check-in and choose to either complete payment on Sunday, Dec 2 after church, or have the Check Out Crew bill your credit card and email you a receipt. For your convenience these forms will be available at the Advance Registration Table prior to the Auction but will not be accepted until the night of the Auction. OR . . . CHECK-OUT BUDDIES: You can ask someone to check out for you as long as they know your bidder number and have your method of payment.

RAFFLE: Raffle tickets in the amounts of $5-25 will be sold during the evening and the winning ticket will be drawn the night of the Auction. The winner will get double the percentage if present and the face amount if not. For example, a $15 ticket will garner 30% of the total collected if the winner is still there, and 15% if not.

REFRESHMENTS: A selection of delicious hors d’oeuvres and sweets donated by UUCV members and friends will be available throughout the evening. Also available for a cash donation at the Bar throughout the evening, will be beer, wine, bottled water and soft drinks.

SIGN UP ITEMS: Sign Ups will take place from 7:00 to 8:15 in the Social Hall. Sign Ups have a fixed price and a set number of openings. Sign Ups will be presented in three Features. Note: if there are more people who sign up for an event than spaces alotted, names will be drawn after each Feature to determine the winning participants and/or couples.

SILENT AUCTION: The Silent Auction will be held in the Social Hall from 6:30 to 8:15. Each bidding sheet will indicate the catalogue number of the item, name of the item and minimum bid. Write your bidder number and the amount you are bidding in even dollar amounts direcly below the existing bid. Bid as often as you like and remember all funds go to UUCV. When the Silent Auction closes, the highest bidder’s number will be posted on the item or certificate, ready for you to pick up and take home after you check out.

CHILDREN’S AUCTION ACTIVITIES: The Auction isn’t only for adults. Children will be cared for downstairs in the elementary classrooms during the Auction. They will have their own Kids’ Auction with a chance to purchase non-food items for kids ages 4 and up with their “Auction Bucks”. 2001 Paint Night with UUCV Artists September 21, 2019 7—9:30 pm Cost: $45 (18 people) Hosted by the UUCV Artists, Char Klein will lead an intrepid group in painting an Eastern Screech Owl step-by-step in the dining hall of the church. You don’t have to have ever picked up a brush. You’ll learn everything you need to know with all the supplies available. AND, by the end of the evening, you’ll end up with an original painting to proudly display on a wall. There will also be delicious snacks, plenty of wine and soft drinks to enhance your painting experience.

2002 Mardi Gras Dinner February 23, 2019 6:30 pm Cost: $45 (10 people) Join Deb Stille and Jen Teates for a delicious Louisiana Mardi Gras-themed dinner. Your hosts will provide several excellent courses for you to enjoy, surrounded by Mardi Gras decorations and accompanied by New Orleans music. Come dressed in your best purple, green and gold to enjoy a special evening of food, drink and companionship on a chilly winter’s night.

2003 Dining in Switzerland September 14, 2019 6:30 pm Cost: $50 (14 people) Come yodel with Rita van Alkemade and Tim Tilton and enjoy the flavorful cuisine of Switzerland. “While we can’t duplicate the glorious mountaintop views of Switzerland, we will attempt an otherwise authentic Swiss experience.” The evening will begin with appetizers including a variety of fresh baked breads dipped into a sizzling cheese fondue. This will be followed by a hearty Swiss stew and accompanying vegetables. The meal will end with a mouth-watering fondue of assorted refreshing fruits dipped in melted dark Swiss chocolate.

6 2004 Good Day Sunshine Hike and Lunch May 18, 2019 8 am Cost: $10 (10 people) Start your day right with a morning hike on the Appalachian Trail (AT) with fellow trekkers, led by Sarah Gaudelli. You have your choice of starting at the UUCV parking lot and ending up with 7 miles, or meeting up with everyone at other AT stops along the way—PA 74 (5 miles), Lisburn Road (4 miles) or PA 641 (3 miles). The hike will culminate with a lovely catered lunch, beverages and a relaxing dip in Sarah’s pool.

2005 Super Soup and Scrabble Sunday September 22, 2019 1—4 pm Cost: $15 (8 people) What better thing to do on a Sunday afternoon than enjoy a bowl of home-made soup, delicious bread and beverages while sharing a brain-tickling game of Scrabble with others in the group. Hosted by Diane Dusman, great fun will be had by all and you might just learn a new word or two.

2006 Handmade Book-Making April 6, 2019 1—4 pm Cost: $30 (20 people) Learn the basics of producing a book from scratch to create your very own journal, sketchbook or photo album. Hand- made books also make great gifts to be cherished for a lifetime. Leeann Rhoades will present an overview of materials used in book-making and book styles. Techniques will include folding, sewing, glueing and measuring.

2007 Turkish Delights January 19, 2019 6 pm Cost: $40 (8 people) Enjoy a variety of soups, mezzes, desserts and wines from the Ottoman Cuisine. Madelyn Campbell is your host for this exotic meal that is sure to warm the souls of all who come together on this cold winter evening.

7 2008 Professional Help for your Garden Date TBD Cost: $75 per session (3 households) Can your garden—and your back—use the help of three experienced and enthusiastic gardeners? Let Dee Lauderbaugh, Rebecca Frantantuono and Carole DeWall assist you with your weeding, planting and other general maintenance. On a date mutually agreed to all, they will work together in your garden for 1 1/2 hours.

2009 Solstice Hippie Dinner June 22, 2019 6—10 pm Cost: $40 (12 people) Here’s your chance to celebrate Summer Solstice 2019 with a wonderful “hippie dinner” of fondue and other healthy foods prepared by Char Klein, Gail Black, Connie Bair and Bev Ayers-Nachamkin. Enjoy music you knew and loved from the 60’s while being served by appropriately garbed hosts.

2010 German Dinner February 22, 2019 7 pm Cost: $35 (7 people) Savour the flavors of Germany prepared and served by Gisela Roethke, an expert at German cuisine. The meal will consist of four courses with good will and warm friendship on a chilly winter evening.

2011 A Night in Carlisle for Two Date TBD Cost: $35 Enjoy dinner at the new Jewels of India restaurant and then head over to the Carlisle Theatre for a night of cinematic magic. Chris Kapp will provide a $20 gift certificate to Jewels of India and two tickets to the Carlisle Theater.

2012 The Un-Event 20/20 Challenge Night of the Auction Cost: $20 Unlimited This year the Small Groups Womenfolk and Namely Women are taking a pause from hosting our usual festive gatherings, but we all still want to support the Auction. Therefore we are offering a no fuss, no muss, no bother Un-Event Challenge. Are you willing to accept it? The 20 members of Womenfolk and Namely Women are each donating $20 toward the Auction. We invite 20 (or more!) of you to match our donation with your contribution of $20. So as not to miss socializing, all who meet the challenge will be invited to gather at one of Carlisle’s fabulous new restaurants for a dinner-on-your-own evening of conversation and fellowship. Date and location for this gathering TBD based on the final number who step up to the Un-Event Challenge.

2013 A Portrait in Graphite of Your Choice Date TBD Cost: $30 (20 people) Our very talented artist Carolyn Hocker will draw a portrait of your choice, preferably from life, but she is also willing to work with photographs. Her medium will be pencil on paper. Carolyn is known for her astounding ability to capture a likeness and an original portrait by her would be treasured for many years to come.

2014 Modern Pop Culture Class March 2, 2019 3 pm Cost: $25 (10 people) Carmen Hershey will teach a class entitled “Carmen’s Modern Pop Culture Class” to update us all in the slang, technology, music and culture of today’s youth. Snacks will be included.

9 2015 Irish Dinner March 30, 2019 Time TBD Cost: $30 (4 people) Carol and Michael Riesmeyer will be hosting a delicious meal from Ireland and here’s the menu: Irish pub salad; Fisherman’s Pie made with cod, shrimp and mushrooms in a creamy wine sauce, topped with mashed potatoes; Irish soda bread; Bailey’s chocolate cake, Jameson’s Irish Whiskey or Guinness Blonde Ale.

2016 Introduction to Woodcarving January 10, 17, 24, 31, 2019 6—8 pm Cost: $20 (5 people) Learn basic woodcarving in four Thursday evening sessions. Richard Bronakoski will sponsor the class which includes all the necessary tools and materials for a beginning project. Classes will be held at the New Kingstown Fire House, New Kingstown, PA.

2017 High Tea with the Minister May 18, 2019 3 pm $35/adults $15/children (20 people) Reverend Aija Simpson would enjoy the pleasure of your company at her new house in Midtown Harrisburg for tea, cakes and other various sweets. She is also offering “a very British cocktail.”

2018 The Owl as Spiritual Being March 23, 2019 Time TBD Cost: $30 (10 people) Char Klein will lead you through a study of the place of owls in multiple cultures. Afterward create your own owls as pendants on beaded necklaces.

2019 Motown, Cocktails and Tapas July 6, 2019 7pm Cost: $10 (20 people) Join Reverend Aija in her new home in Midtown Harrisburg for Spanish tapas and cocktails to celebrate with her in friendship and fellowship.

10 2020 Mom’s Home Cooking March 22, 2019 6:30 pm Cost: $35 (8 people) Perhaps the most fundamental task of a mother is feeding her children. We’re sure you all have memories of a favorite dish that nurtured you. Please join Wendy Gebb and Cheryl Parsons for an evening of celebrating mothers. They will prepare and serve some of their mothers’ favorite recipes for a full course meal of nourishment and memories. They invite you to bring stories of favorite foods and a copy of a recipe from your mother’s kitchen to share as we all remember forkfuls of motherly love.

2021 Honey Tasting and Bee Talk March 14, 2019 6 pm Cost: $20 per person $35 per couple (15 people) Join Tara and Greg Hildebrand as they educate us on the secret lives of bees. Event will include tasting the sweet nectar of honey.

2022 Super Soup and Scrabble Sunday June 16, 2019 1—4 pm Cost: $15 (8 people) What better thing to do on a Sunday afternoon than enjoy a bowl of home-made soup, delicious bread and beverages while sharing a brain-tickling game of Scrabble with others in the group, especially if you couldn’t make the first chance. 2023 A Day at the Museum Date and Time TBD Cost: $50 per person (3 people per trip, unlimited trips) Have you been wanting to see that new exhibition you’ve been reading about? Gisela Roethke will do the driving to a special exhibit or collection you’ve been wanting to see at a museum in Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington, D.C. Entrance fee and lunch are on your own. 2027 Learn to Dance Like Fred and Ginger April 13, 2019 2 pm Cost: $10 (20 people) Join Susan Rimby and John Katz in the UUCV dining room for East Coast Swing Dancing. We’ll teach a one-hour lesson and spend the second hour practicing what we’ve learned. NO PARTNER IS NECESSARY! We’ll all dance with each other. Water will be provided, and we’ll have door prizes, too! Please wear shoes, not sandals.

2029 Ricketts Glen Hike June 8, 2019 8:30 am Cost: $25 (12 people) Enjoy the amazing beauty of Ricketts Glen State Park, 30 miles north of Bloomsburg, with your guides Michele and Jim Burton and Tom and Carole DeWall. Twenty-two waterfalls await you, including one 94 feet high! This is a strenuous 3-mile hike with steep grades and slippery trails, but it’s worth the effort. Good knees and balance required. Snacks and lunch will be provided on this all-day trek to one of the most inspiring natural sites in Pennsylvania.

2030 Be a Player at Game Night February 9, 2019 7 pm Cost: $20 (10 people) Choose your Game Table: whether you prefer playing cards or table games, this event is for you. Tom and Carole DeWall offer an evening of playing their favorite family card game, Hearts. The pool table and ping-pong will also be available. Snacks and beverages provided. Any Sunday in April or May, 2019 Cost: $100 per person (2 people) Michael Weidner invites you on a unique tour of the Kalorama section of Washington, D.C. He will provide the transportation to and from D.C. and a brunch at a fine dining restaurant. Good walking shoes are a must. Mike will lead you on a tour of exteriors of embassies and the homes of the rich and famous such as the Obamas, Kushners and Clintons. Visits also include the DuPont Farmers Market, Woodrow Wilson House and the Islamic Center.
