December Letter from the Superintendent: 2017 It is a great me to be a Warrior! This fall has certainly proved to be a great me for the Warriors. This fall we won four CBC league tles and our band has qualifi ed for its third straight state compe on! We have implemented several ini a ves to increase student achievement and we con nue to improve our use of technology. However, the most exci ng news might be the building of a new athle c complex. As I reported last spring, there were several items s ll needed to complete the campus and an athle c complex was at the top of the list. We have a need for appropriate locker room and training space as well as addi onal storage out by the athle c fi elds. The Board of Educa on was presented with a plan to fund the athle c complex and they voted unanimously to move forward with its construc on. Dave Bollheimer, Treasurer of Northwestern Schools, was able to work with 5/3 Securi es to develop a lease plan that would allow us to use our Permanent Improvement levy money to INSIDE make payments on a new athle c complex. The plan is very similar to what we did years ago to THIS ISSUE: remodel the old elementary school. Permanent Improvement levies are designed specifi cally to From the Desk of the purchase items which will last longer than fi ve years, fund improvements to structures already Superintendent in place, or to build new facili es. These monies are generally used to build things or purchase Winter Events things that help us educate our students, the key being that the money must be used for Accomplishments things that are “permanent.” We cannot use Permanent Improvement monies to fund salaries, benefi ts, or supplies. Because we have new buildings, this is the perfect me to use Permanent Improvement money to build an athle c complex. We o en hear about government agencies Winter School Calendar mismanaging money. Northwestern Elementary has started a STEM lab/makerspace for the kids to explore engineering ideas and more. During the last couple of months Kindergarten and First graders have built bridges a er hearing Iggy Peck; Architect and then inves gated construc ng trees to see what would hold the most le ers a er reading Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom. Second graders used the book Build Up to explore diff erent structures and then built structures with spaghe and marshmallows. They es mated the amount of building materials they would use and then counted the fi nished products. Third graders built roller coasters in their Science classes and discussed the ideas of gravity and speed and then built catapults to “Pumpkin Chuck”. Fourth graders took on the Marshmallow Challenge. Who could build the tallest tower using 20 pieces of spaghe ? The tower needed to be free standing and hold a marshmallow at the top. They had several things to do with the data they collected in their math classes.

In collabora on with the Ohio Educa on Associa on, Northwestern Jr./Sr. High had the privilege of hos ng Senator Bob Hacke (Ohio Senate District 10) on Monday, October 23, 2017. The Senator presented to Mr. Brian Stevens’ 9th grade Advanced American History students and to Mrs. Dixon-Kays’ Advanced Government students. Mr. Hacke presented an overview of state government and his personal story. He fi elded student’s ques ons as well. Students had an outstanding opportunity to interact with Senator Hacke and hear about bills currently being discussed in the Senate.
