Malcolm Public Schools News From Our Administration 10004 NW 112th St By: Mr. Ryan Terwilliger, Superintendent Malcolm, NE 68402

SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION Give Us A Call High School Office Dear Malcolm Public School Parents, 402-796-2151 ext. 1 Westfall Office As we enter into November, it is time to think about the 402-796-2151 ext. 2 inevitable—BAD WEATHER!!! Although we can hope for a more mild winter than last, we still need to prepare for the Business Office worst. For that reason, this article for “The Clipper” is meant as a review of our 402-796-2151 ext. 3 early-out, late-start and school cancelation procedures.

Listed below are the resources that we use: Inside This Issue: Our primary source of communication will be our automated message Page 2: Student Council service (EZ-Messenger). Unfortunately, last year we found out that it wasn’t so EZ. Many of you received multiple phone calls each time I sent out a Page 3: Mrs. Haun message. The number of phone calls depended on the number of phones that you listed multiplied by the number of students you had in school. I think we have that problem fixed, but I am not promising anything at this Page 4: Schedule time.

For the 4th year in a row the Malcolm Student Council has earned the Gold Medal Award for Outstanding Student Council in the state of Nebraska. These young men and women have done outstanding work in the area of student and school government, community service, charitable service and working to make the school environment a warm and friendly place. These 30+ young men and women put in countless hours of recycling and volunteer service to make our school a school where students want to attend and learn. Congratulations to these young men and women on their award.

Thank You THANK YOU. What a great job the community, boosters, coaches, staff and students did again this year at the cross country meets. All three of them were flawless and run to perfection. At the district meet I had three superintendents come up to me and congratulate Malcolm on how professionally it was run. You need to pat yourselves on the back. This is the reason that we have schools asking to get into our invite and want to come to our place to run. Special thanks needs to be given to Mr. and Mrs. Hoyer for getting the course ready for each race, to the Branched Oak State Park Staff for all they do to help with the meet, and to Mr. and Mrs. Kleist and Mr. and Ms. Jirovsky for the use of their trailers at the meet.

malcolm public schools “the clipper” november 7, 2013 page 2 6th and 7th Grade Reading By: Mrs. Haun

The first quarter 6th and 7th graders studied nonfiction and fiction text. The guiding questions throughout the unit were “How do we decide what is true?” or “What is the best way to find the truth?” Something that is true is real, genuine, or reliable. It is fact as oppose to fantasy. Yet, even a fantasy story can have elements of truth, and something that looks realistic can be false. Every day we see and hear information—in books, in newspapers, on television, and on the Internet. Sometimes it is a challenge to determine whether what we are seeing and hearing is true. We studied a variety of different strategies that can help students tell fact from fiction. This quarter 6th and 7th graders are focusing on short stories. The guiding questions throughout this unit are “Is conflict always bad?” and “Does every conflict have a winner?” A conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. There are many different types of conflict. There are also many lessons to learn. In addition to studying conflict, we will also focus on the elements and the structure of short stories. During this unit, students will read a variety of short stories and identify the basic elements each story. 6th and 7th graders will finish up the semester by studying drama. 8th Grade English In addition to daily editing and grammar lessons, students have writing workshop on a daily basis. Writing workshop is ongoing. Students will always be working on a piece of writing. Some pieces will be teacher directed descriptive topics to help students prepare for the state writing test in January; others are student selected topics. There are five steps to the writing process and at any given time students are working on some aspect of their papers. The steps are pre-writing (usually involves a graphic organizer), first draft (written in pencil with lines skipped), peer and self evaluations, editing and revising, and publishing a final copy. Effective writing contains well-chose ideas, clear organization, and appropriate voice. Experienced writers also pay attention to word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. These are known as the six traits of writing.

Student Council Recycling Grant

Thanks to our Student Council for helping out to “Keep America Beautiful.”

Student Council wrote a grant to Norris Power for recycling bins. We received $1,075. The grant funds will be used to purchase 10 blue totes for classrooms, 10 green totes for newspaper recycling, 6 Brute cans for plastic bottles in the Westfall area, and 2 stacking bins for the teachers’ lounge for paper, plastic and cans. The funds will also be used for a recycle caddy to pick-up the recycling items from the classrooms.

Cheerleaders Host Little Cheer Camp By Becky Densberger

On Saturday, October 5th, the Malcolm High School cheerleaders hosted a “Little Cheer Camp” practice for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. On Friday, October 11th, they performed at the home football game to the song “Real in Rio” from the movie Rio. We had 79 little cheerleaders, ten high school cheerleaders, seven high school helpers and four adult helpers. We had a total of 100 people on the field. This was a fundraiser for the cheerleading uniforms.

I would like to thank the high school cheerleaders: Taylor Dishman, Shi Hargens, Savannah Hargens, Alyssa Hoeft, Elani Irons, Brittany Jennett, Darian Ogden, Andi Rivers, Sam Schroeder and Amanda Steiner. These girls did a great job of keeping the group on track at practice and during the performance. I would also like to thank our high school helpers: McKenzie Beach, Emma Beal, Hayley Densberger, Tessa Dunse, Justine Nelson, Emma Schroeder, and Charlee Sindelar. We couldn’t have done it without the extra help! We really appreciate your support. In addition, I would like to thank Kelie Hargens, Terri Hoeft and Valerie Popp for their help at the practice and performance. A special thank you to Heather Ladman for designing and making the t-shirts for our camp!

Thanks again for all of your support in this fundraiser. We had a great time and look forward to everyone participating in the “Little Cheer Camp” this winter! Go Clippers!

In Language Arts we are learning about figurative language and how to use it in our writing. Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. We have learned about similes, onomatopoeia, and alliteration so far. Other types of figurative language are metaphors, hyperbole, personification, and idioms. Alliteration is the repetition of the same initial letter or sound in a series of words. We realized that many tongue twisters use alliteration. The 3rd graders enjoyedd writing their own tongue twisters. We hope you enjoy saying them 3 times fast! SUPER SILLY SENTENCES! Marching marshmallows marched in Mexico.
