Archbishop Lori Announces Liturgical Guidelines to Protect the Faithful Against the Flu

January 17, 2014

Due to the rise in incidence of the flu in our area, Archbishop William E. Lori announces the following guidelines for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy during this flu season. These guidelines reinforce recommended practices to reduce the transmission of the flu and will go into effect immediately.

Archbishop Lori asks that these guidelines be published and/or shared with parishioners.

1. The distribution of the Precious Blood for the faithful may be suspended, at the discretion of each pastor, with an exception made for those priests, deacons, and others who, for medical reasons, must receive from the chalice only. The teaches that Christ is received, whole and entire, even under only one species.

2. The exchange of the Sign of Peace may be offered without any physical contact. When the priest celebrant extends the invitation for the sign of peace, the faithful, instead of a handshake, may bow or otherwise greet the persons nearby.

3. All ministers of Holy Communion should use hand sanitizer prior to the distribution of Holy Communion. Alcohol-based or other appropriate waterless hand sanitizers should be made available on the credence table for such use.

4. While the faithful retain the option of receiving Holy Communion on the tongue or in the hand, all ministers of Holy Communion are advised to distribute the consecrated Hosts with particular care, being cautious, as far as possible, not to touch the tongue or the hand of the communicant.

5. Holy Water fonts are to be drained, cleaned with a disinfectant, and re-filled with holy water on a regular basis. Please note that the removed holy water should be disposed of appropriately in the sacrarium or poured into the ground.

6. Parishioners should be reminded that if they are ill, or suspect they are ill with a contagious illness, they are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation. They should remain at home and return to church when they are well.

7. Additional precautions should be used in the maintenance of worship spaces and church halls, in particular the disinfecting of areas or items which come into contact with hands, such as handrails, restroom areas, and the tops of pews.

Archbishop’s Annu al Appe al

“Be Protectors of God’s Gifts.”—Pope Francis Archdiocese of Ba ltimore A Message from Archbishop Lori Upcoming Events: Commitment Weekend Dear Friends in Christ, February 15-16 This year, I will celebrate my second Follow-up Weekend anniversary as your Archbishop. The year February 22-23 will also mark the second Archbishop’s Annual Appeal since my appointment as Archbishop of this historic Archdiocese. And I am equally hopeful about the continued good we can The Prayer accomplish together, in the example of our for the 2014 Holy Father, on behalf of the less fortunate Archbishop’s Annu al Appe al of God’s people dwelling among us.

The theme of this year’s Appeal is, “Be Protectors of God’s Gifts.” In his O God, the Father of every gift, first homily as Pope, our Holy Father reminded us of our responsibility to all we have and all we are be protectors of those around us. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal unites our communities of Faith, bringing them together to serve the common good. Nearly 30 of our more affluent parishes team up with disadvantaged parishes within the Archdiocese and around the globe through our Parish Partnership Program. To date, more than half of our archdiocesan parishes are involved in this program, working together on liturgy and ministry and fostering cultural exchange with Catholics across the Archdiocese and in Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

“Be Protectors of God’s Gifts.” Protecting Our Mission and Ministries The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides a comprehensive way for you to contribute to your immediate spiritual community, your parish, and the larger community that is the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Each parish within the Archdiocese participates in the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and has an Appeal goal, based on offertory collections. Your tax-deductible contribution is applied to your parish goal, with one-quarter of each dollar being rebated directly to your parish until it reaches goal. After your parish surpasses goal, 50 percent of all donations are returned to your parish. Each parish is able to use rebate funds to support their specific ministries, goals, and objectives.
