    Vision and Insight: Portraits of the Aged Woman Artist, 1600–1800 Julia K. Dabbs AT THE AGE OF SEVENTY-FIVE, the noted American portraitist Alice Neel (1900–1984) turned the mirror on herself and remarkably began painting her first self-portrait (completed 1980; Na- tional Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC; fig. 1).1 In this image Neel represents what possibly no female artist previously had done: a self-portrait as a completely nude older woman.2 She does not hide the visible signs of aging, preferring to reveal herself with characteristic honesty and vulnerability. Yet also pride: Neel has positioned herself rather regally on an upholstered chair, Julia Dabbs is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Her research has focused on the translation and analysis of art historical documents of the early-modern period of Europe (i.e., 1500–1800). This interest began with a dissertation on the art and theory of the seventeenth-century French sculptor Michel Anguier, about whom she has published in the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes (2002). Since then her attention has turned to life stories of European and American women artists, leading to articles published in Aurora (2005) and Eighteenth-Century Women (2008). Dabbs is also the author of Life Stories of Women Artists, 1550–1800: An Anthology (2009), which includes translations and analyses of key biographical documents for forty-six early-modern women artists. Inspired by the University of Toronto conference “Aging, Old Age, Memory, Aesthetics,” held on March 25– 27, 2011, she is currently working on a book tentatively titled Sibyls of Sight: Old Age and the Woman Artist in the Early Modern Period.

    Ridlon 1 The Game and the Gaze: Sofonisba Anguissola’s Subversion of Gendered Genre Scenes Sofonisba Anguissola, one of the few Renaissance female painters, used her position in society, as both a noble woman and as a painter, to assert that women were cable of succeeding in activities that were deemed masculine—most obviously the act of painting itself. This paper will focus on one painting in particular, Sofonisba Anguissola’s The Chess Game. This painting emphasizes the ability of her subjects—all of whom are women—in several ways, which strongly contrasts another more common representation of a gaming scene, specifically, The Chess Players by Guilio Campi. In this picture, Anguissola inverts the Renaissance trope of a woman playing chess as a game of love. She does this by flipping the traditional situation of the viewer looking at the female subject, to one where the subject actually gazes upon the viewer. This paper begins by reviewing existing scholarship on Sofonisba, which focuses heavily on her biography and gender, as female artists were substantially less common than male artists during the Renaissance. As is frequently noted, her familial status was essential in her training and success. This paper acknowledges that her biography is important, but rather than focusing on her family’s connections, looks instead to her sisters, who comprise the subjects in The Chess Game, and how Sofonisba uses their portraits to create something different. Ultimately this paper will show that the rules of game etiquette are fundamental to understanding how and why these two paintings are so different and how Sofonisba subverted this type of scene.

Instructor of Art History Abstract Born in Italy during the Renaissance, Sofonisba Anguissola was the first internationally recognized female artist. This paper examines the events that advanced her career and the cultural situation in which she found herself competing as an artist. Uniquely, during the Italian Renaissance arose a woman whose life story and oeuvre are unfolding again for modern day scholars. Sofonisba Anguissola became an exceptional painter and was recognized by Vasari, Michelangelo and Van Dyck during a period in history when women did not typically achieve recognition as artists. During the Renaissance, women were thought of as the object of representation rather than in the role of the subjective, thinking agent, or the artist. Sofonisba Anguissola was the first internationally recognized woman artist of the Renaissance, and she blazed a trail for other women artists to follow. Who was she, and how did she do it? How did she handle her career situation? Sofonisba’s birth into a noble family with liberally minded parents was one factor in her success. In the small, northern Italian town of Cremona, Sofonisba Anguissola was one of the few artists in the history of Western art to be born into a noble family. She was the eldest in a family of six sisters, who were all also artists, and one brother. Her birth is believed to be around the year 1532.1 Her father, Amilcare, was ahead of his time by providing his daughters good educations as if they were sons of nobility.

Sandberg ABSTRACT Italian Renaissance artist Sofonisba Anguissola is well-known for the array of self- portraits she painted during her early career. Through her self-portraits created between 1548 and 1559, Sofonisba constructed her identity as a virtuous young noblewoman and skilled artist. One key to Sofonisba’s portraiture was her adaptation of the ideas prescribed by humanist Baldassar Castiglione in his famous text The Courtier in order to depict herself as the ideal female courtier. Sofonisba’s courtly self-fashioning reached its pinnacle with her 1559 self-portrait Bernardino Campi Painting Sofonisba Anguissola, which was among the last works Sofonisba completed before she was invited to join the Spanish court of Philip II as a lady-in-waiting-cum-painter. This thesis examines the means by which Sofonisba strategically shaped her identity for a court position in her 1559 portrait. I argue she utilized accepted principles for 16th century noble portraiture and costuming, the secondary figure of her former painting teacher, and courtly wit as described by Castiglione, to portray herself as the ideal noblewoman and to firmly secure her position as the first professional female “noble artist” at court.

    A LIFE OF GENIUS, RETRIEVED AT LAST Kathleen Burke, Smithsonian, May, 1995 In an exhibition that celebrates her collected works, the singular accomplishments of painter Sofonisba Anguissola are restored to history In mid-16th-century Italy, at the height of the Renaissance, a household in the northern city of Cremona was a haven of domestic felicity. The spacious palazzo, still standing on the Via Tibaldi, was a dwelling rich in laughter, in a spirit of intellectual inquiry—and in daughters. Amilcare Anguissola, a member of Cremonese minor nobility, and his wife, Bianca, had in fact six daughters and a son. At a time when the pursuits of wellborn young women were rigidly circumscribed—instruction in little more than needlework and music was customary— Amilcare decided to educate his daughters. "Sofonisba Anguissola: A Renaissance Woman," at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, D.C. through June 25, following a European tour, offers a rare glimpse of a fascinating figure.
