Ignatius Loyola his companions, six in number,vowed themselves to the service of God , in the chapel of Our Lady at M ont martre (hill of martyrs) in Paris, on whose summit a grand basilica to the Sacred Heart of n e w Jesus is now being completed . Three members joined them before the whole bo d proceeded to Italy, and these original mem ber the x O rder 0 are considered the founders of , t. course after S Ignatius . And this IS to be a characteristic of the Society through e m out its whole existence . The roll of its m an 2 o o o —a m bers never at y time reached 5 , , uch smaller number than that of many other religious — orders during the Catholic ages and a great S E T C O F TH E S O CI E O F E S US ~ A K H TY j . 9 many of these were kept inside the walls of colleges . Nevertheless , from the beginning the J esuits seemed to be endowed with the gift of : ubiquity Germany, France , Italy , Spain , Eng o f land (then the land persecution) , Europe was too small for them they spread over Asia and - i n America , and the travellers of to day are vestigating the mysterious wilds of Africa ex lo red p two hundred years ago by the sons of St . Ignatius . The spirit which St . Ignatius breathed into his followers , both in his book of the Spiritual Exercises and in the Constitutions of his Order, was the spirit of detachment and devotedness . “ ! “ All for God, in a word , was his motto ; for ! the greater glory of God , as he expressed it . N othing should keep the true Jesuit back where ’ there was question of God s honor . Therefore 1 0 A SK E T CH O F TH E SO CI E O F E S US TY j . he made obedience the distinguishing virtue of . be his children Obedience was to their spur, obedience their rein : so long as they were act in g through obedience they were to go on when “ obedience said Stop , they stopped . This is ff m - very di erent fro the spirit of the world to day, is it not ! The world of to -day claims inde en den c e t p , the right of every man to hink and do as he likes . Through legitimate obedience we know the will of God . To do the will Of God with all the i n te n sitv we possess is to love l H im with all our might . This is the idea Jesuit . To do our own will , whatever it may be , is to love self , in opposition to God . The most perfect example of this independence i s the devil . The will of God is the salvation of souls . I f the obedience of the Society proved its devo infi n itel - tion to God , its whole history , its y varied , - never ending labors , showed its love for those D souls dear to Him . etachment , devotedness . t The J esui left his country , everything , to toil where obedience sent him for the good of souls . Consequently the history of the Society is a story of labors all over the world , of every kind , n to bri g souls to God . It was fitting that St . Ignatius first son in religion should be the ’ Society s first martyr of obedience . Ignatius not satisfied with flying his missionary excursions on the part of religious . H e wished , for he was one of the wisest of men , that his work and that their works should be ff ! permanent . How could he best e ect this “ F H E S O I E T Y O F E S S 1 A SK E TCH O T C j U . 3 a h At th t day , as at t is day , the way to secure perm anency to any good work was to secure its fou ndations . H e who lays a solid foundation may erect a safe building ; without the fo u n da tion there can be no building . The question of the day, then as now , was the education of youth . Consequently Ignatius dedicated his Order in a special manner to the Catholic edu o f cation the young. The Jesuits pledge them al selves to be ways ready to teach the catechism . ! St . Francis avier himself taught it to the little children in India . One of the great and one of the earliest works of the Society has been the D direction of colleges . The uke of Gandia as sisted the Fathers in opening some of the first in Spain . The times needed this devotion to education and religion and catechetical i n struction . For in many parts both the clergy I A S E T CH O F TH E S O CI E T Y O F E S S 4 K j U . an d u n the laity , on their account , were wofully -re instructed . This was what gave the pseudo formers the power to spread their false doctrines . Therefore the early Jesuit Fathers set to work to help to remedy this evil , which the Council of Trent corrected finally and e ffi c ac io usly by the i far establ shment , so as possible , of ecclesiastical m i n ar les i se n all the dioceses of the Church .

Since I considered this responsibility too serious and too extensive for me to handle alone, I felt obliged to share the plan with my companions, the professed sisters, in order to hear their opinions and advice, because this would involve all of us for time and eternity. The sisters also need to know about this plan, because if it is accepted, they would have to profess their vows and live according to it. After consultation with the sisters, I now submit the following remarks regarding the plan graciously shared with us: 1. The archbishop drew up this plan and presented it to the Holy See in order to provide the Religious Institute of the Poor School Sisters with a canonical form and foundation—that is, statutes approved by the Church—a caring endeavor which we recognize with respect and gratitude. 2. The Society of the Poor School Sisters does not want to evade Church prescripts. The Poor School Sisters desire absolutely nothing other than to live in accordance with the mind and spirit of the Holy Catholic Church so that it can follow its calling on a secure path and count on God’s blessing and help. 3. Just as every order has its own statutes and rules corresponding to the purpose designated by its founders, the Poor School Sisters also desire and require a constitution and rules that provide for their main purpose, that is, the education and character formation of girls and young women.

    Notre Dame “Cousins” share Roots, Charism throughout the World. By Ruth Shanklin Jackson, Mankato Communications Director NAMA NEWS, March 2006 Independent congregations, all of whom can trace their origins to Peter Fourier and Alix LeClerc, have met every two or three years since 1983, with the last meeting held in Munich in September 2004. These Notre Dame “cousins” have elements of their charism that have been identified as common to all or most of these congregations, including education, poverty, unity, devotion to Mary and Eucharist. During the 1995 meeting of the Notre Dame “cousins” one of the speakers had used the image of fire in speaking of the nature of charism. At the end of the meeting, one general superior “returned to that image in her evaluation, stating that for her, the association did not represent congregations that have traveled separate ways but women that have been ignited by the same spark and continue to share the light that they have received.” (Sister Patricia Flynn, Circular 64/95, November 21, 1995) The woman who was the impetus for this, Blessed Alix Le Clerc, was convinced that God was calling her to the education of young girls whom she believed were regarded as “worthless straw.” Because no established structures existed for such a vision, she gathered five companions and with St. Peter Fourier, who was the local pastor, made plans for a new religious congregation. The Canonesses of St. Augustine of the Congregation of Notre Dame made their first consecration together on December 25, 1597. In spite of poverty, misunderstanding, and resistance from church authorities, the new venture flourished and spread throughout France and into southern Germany.

Under the Rule of St. Augustine for education of the young (1622). Beatification date: 4 May 1947 by Pope Pius XII SHORT BIOGRPAPHY Co-founder of The Augustinian Canonesses of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Alix was born February 2, 1576 in Remiremont, Vosges, France. As a teenaged daughter of a prosperous family, she enjoyed music and dancing. At the age of 19, however, she had the first of a series of “vision-dreams.” Our Lady appeared to her dressed in a sisters’ habit that Alix did not recognize. “Come, daughter,” said Mary, “and I will welcome you.” From that day on, Alix took a more serious view of life and aspired to God’s special service. Soon afterwards, her family moved to the town of Mattaincourt. The pastor of Mattaincourt was St. Peter Fourier, a diocesan priest who was successfully promoting a revival of religion. Father Peter agreed with Alix’s devout father that his daughter should enter a convent. But she refused to join an order that was cloistered, saying that she would rather set up a convent whose members were free to engage in “active work.” In 1597 Alix and three other women were allowed by Father Fourier to dedicate their lives to God. In 1598 they took up residence in a nearby dwelling, determined to educate poor girls without charge.

    Saint Peter’s Basilica Vatican City The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica, is located within the Vatican City. Saint Peter's Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, holding 60,000 people. It is the symbolic "Mother church" of the Catholic Church and is regarded as one of the holiest Christian sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". In Catholic tradition, it is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to tradition, first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction of the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed on November 18, 1626. Saint Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions and for its historical associations. It is associated with the papacy, with the Counter-reformation and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age.

    The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest.

It is with pleasure, therefore, that I am able to announce the fulfillment of these desires. The Breviary, translated by Father Aquinas Byrnes, O.P., is now in the process of publication at Rome, while the translation of the Dominican Martyrology has just completed. The Martyrology is one of the six official books of the Church's liturgy, its use in the choral recitation of the Divine Office is obligatory. Because of the salutary effects derived from the reading of this sacred volume, various Pontiffs have urged its use by those who recite the Office privately.
