DEPUTY PRINCIPAL UPDATE Ye a r 12 S t u d e n t s are rapidly heading towards the end of their time at school. Students need to ensure they keep up to date with all classwork and assessment tasks and start to engage more fully in a regular home study program as they move toward their Trial HSC Examination in early Term 3.

T h e H S C timetable has been released for 2017. You can reach this at the following link: http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps /portal/nesa/11 - 1 2 / h s c / k e y - d a t e s - e x a m - timetables/2017 - h s c - w r i t t e n - e x a m - t i me t a b l e

Students should seek support if they are struggling with their class work. They can speak to their class teachers; subject Head Teachers, their Year Advisors or Deputy Princ ipal for advice. The Learning HUB is available on Thursdays and students are encouraged to book in by contacting Ms Terry in the English staffroom.

Ye a r 10 S t u d e n t s are encouraged to maintain their focus and keep up to date with all class work and a s s e s s m ent tasks to achieve a successful RoSA grade in all their subjects. If your student is struggling please make contact with their classroom teachers or Year Advisor so we can assist them. Students are able to book into the Learning HUB for assistance after sport on a Thursday.

Ye a r 8 S t u d e n t s have settled into Ter m 2. They have a Positive Lifes tyle Day coming up on Wednesday J u n e 7 , 2017. This will involve a number of team building activities to help unite the year as a group. They will be involved in a wor kshop called ‘Cyberia’, which focuses on the safe use of Social Media. Year 8 students can be particularly vulnerable to the incorrect use of social media and this will be an important tool for them to ensure their own cyber safety.

Students will also att e n d y ear meetings over the coming weeks where the Year Advisor will address them on the criteria for attending rewards excursions. Students need to be aware of the importance of having high attendance, no unjustified absences, positive behaviour record, and a strong work ethic keeping up to date with both classwork and assessment tasks. This will keep them on track to be eligible to attend reward excursions.

With the weather continuing to cool down I would like to remind parents/carers and students that we are a uniform wearing school and that short black shorts and coloured hoodies are not part of our uniform. Michele Spinks Deputy Principal P&C REPORT How has the study of Maths changed in the last generation? Is it still taught the way we were taught? What are we trying to emphasise? Why is maths important? What role does homework play in learning and mastering maths?

To help us with these questions (and many more) our next P&C meeting will focus on maths. We have invited a member of the maths faculty t o come along and talk to us about these issues and they will be there to answer our questions (but not do our maths homework f o r u s ! )

As normal we will be meeting on third Wednesday of May (17 th M a y ) from 5:30 - 6:30pm in the staffroom and all parents and citizens are welcome.

STARSTRUCK 2017 ~ SHINE ON Preparations are well underway for our amazing Star Struck performance this year. We are only a month away from the show week and excitement is building amongst our group of dancers. Belmont High School is largely represented in the show with over 70 dancers in 2017. We have 4 dance groups that are in an item called 'Orinoco Flow' and we also stay on to dance to Moana's ' H o w F a r I ' l l G o'. We have one group opening the whole show to the song ' D i a m o n d s ' a n d o ur fantastic Special Education dance group is performing to 'Love is in t h e A i r ' . We have 2 featured dancers that successfully auditioned for an item in contemporary and tap ensembles. Well done to Emily Gill (Contemporar y/Ballet), and Lauren Harrison and Abigail Prentice (Tap).

The show is always an excellent showcase of vo calists, musicians, thespians and dancers and the talent amazes audiences year after year. We would like to thank everyone that supported the students in their fundraising campaign during the pie drive last term. The money raised goes towards costumes and other costs and ensure s that students from Belmont High School can have maximum participation in the event.

Shows are on June 16 and 17 and there are matinee and evening shows. See you next time, The Star Struck Dance Team MENINGOCOCCAL SCHOOL-BASED VACCINATION PROGRAM YEARS 11 and 12 The NSW Minister for Health has announced the start of a scho ol- based Meningococcal vaccination program targeting Year 11 and 12 students in Term 2 2017.

Meningococcal W has emerged as a significant cause of invasive Meningococcal disease with the number of cases almost tripling in NSW in 2016 compared to 2015. M eningococcal disease is a rare but serio us illness that can present as M eningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) or Septicaemia (blood poisoning) and may be caused by one of several serogroups (or types), incl uding A, B, C, W and Y. Use of M eningococcal C vaccine on the National Immunisation Program has almost eradicated M eningococcal C disease in Australia.

Evidence from Australia and overseas suggest that meningococcal disease caused by serotype W is significantly more severe than the other serotypes currently circulating in Australia. More information about meningococcal disease is available here: www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectiou s/factsheets/Pages/Meningococcal_disease.aspx .

The vaccination program will target and protect Year 11 and 12 students based on national expert advice that older adolescents have a greater risk of carrying and transmitting meningococcal disease and that s c h o o l - based vaccination programs are the most effective way of achieving high vaccine uptake in this group. The vaccine is given as a single dose, protects against serotypes A, C, W and Y and has been shown to be both safe and effective.

The Meningococ cal W Response Program for students in Years 11 and 12 will run alongside the routine Year 7 vaccination program, with some mo dification. The second dose of Human P apillomavirus (HPV) vaccine normally given to Year 7 students in Term 2 will be deferred, which will allow school immunisation teams to commence the Year 11 and 12 Meningococcal W Vaccination Program. There is no harm for Year 7 students in delaying the second dose of the HPV vaccine.

Further consideration will be given to completion of the HPV course for Year 7 students, and correspondence about these arrangements will be made to parents and schools as soon as possible. In determining this schedule, NSW Health has been working with education authorities in the Government, Catholic and Independen t sectors so as to minimise disruption to schools and senior students.

T h e local Public Health Unit (available on 1300 066 055) has confirmed arrangements t o o f f e r M eningococcal vaccina tion to Year 11 and 12 students at Belmont High on TUESDAY JUNE 13 .

Your support is greatly appreciated and will help maintain the health and well - being of your students and the broader community.

REACH FOR THE STARS: Year 12 On the last Wednesday of term 1 Year 12 held their inaugural ’Reach for the Stars’ day. The purpose of thi s day was to bring year 12 together as a group and give them some skills to make their time in Year 12 a positive experience as well as preparing them for life after school. Prior to the day students had to nominate to be in one of the following groups: H awaiian, Hippies, Occupations, or Superheroes. Appropriate dress to show you were part of one of these groups was ma n d a t o r y .

Carly and Tresne from My Kitchen Rules (MKR) presented a motivational talk sharing their experiences of reality TV. They were able to offer insights into the skills required to work under duress and maintain their positive attitude to their fellow contestants. They offered great advice on how to stay focused on achieving your goals and at the same time maintain your integrity. N a t h a n Johns our School Police Liaison Officer offered some very sound advice on turning 18 and the legal responsibilities that accompany this. Our students engaged positively and asked some very mature questions.

Students then moved into smaller groups based o n their team selection. They attended ‘Switched on for Life’ presented by Lisa Van Koeverden and then a team building exercise in the form of a Scavenger Hunt arranged by Ms Fagg and Mrs Finnane. After lunch, the group reconvened for a workshop presented b y Byron Williams from Headspace called HSC Stress Less. The day finished with all students completing the Tell Them from Me Survey.

Overall it was a day of fun and inspiration. A big thank you to all our presenters and to the school staff Karen Sawyer, Se anne Jones and Karen Newman for their behind the scenes organisation . Huge thanks also goes to the staff and students from the Special Ed unit who kept everyone fed and watered on the day. You did a fantastic job! Lastly, thank you to Year 12 for engaging i n a l l of the activities on offer throughout the day. It was a great day all round.

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS MUSIC Shanell’s last Last Post! Our Belmont High Anzac ceremony on April 2 8 was again a very moving occasion for many reasons. The main address was supported by our very capable musicians and singers who helped bring the ceremony to life.

Many thanks to our a mazing Concert B a n d w h o played a lovely arrangement of the ever poignant `Dan ny Boy’, our Vocal Ensemble w h o sang `Go The Distance’ with conviction and beauty, Dylan McElhone who accompanied the vocalists on sax for some spine - tingling moments and Shanell Van Koeverden who played `The Last Post’ on trumpet.

It was an especially significant performance for Shanell who is in Year 12 as it is the final time she will play this important piece at Belmont High. We cannot thank Shanell enough for her years of fa ithful service providing this moving and techni cally challenging part of the Belmont High ANZAC ceremony. She will no doubt be employed to play The Last Post at many venues f or the rest of her life so she had better not stop practising it just yet! Band st u de n t s are already busy discussing who will be the next trumpeter to receive the honour of taking Shanell’s place in future ANZAC ceremonies!

C h o r a l fe s t What a beautiful performance the audience at Choralfest was treated to on May 2 when our Vocal E n s e mb l e and Senior Vocal Ensemble competed in the high school division at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts h all. `Sing’, ` G o t he Distance’, `Price Tag’ and `Save My Love’ were the songs p r e s e n t e d .

The adjudicator Mrs Julie Bevan was very impressed by the convict ion with which the singers presented their pieces, the tone achieved and the security of the harmony parts. So impressed was she that she presented 1 st place trophies to both of our ensembles! Congratulations to all singers who have worked very hard to pre pare their performance programs during Term 1. The certificates, ensemble photographs and trophies will soon be o n display in the J Block music trophy c a b i n e t .

Upcoming Events Band and vocal students, please prepare yourselves for the following performanc es which will be here before we know it:  Muswellbrook Eisteddfod - Friday May 2 6 (Vocal and Senior Vocal Ensemble must obtain a note from J6 about this, and pay for the bus)  Starstruck - J u n e 1 5 - 17 (all singers in the choir must return their paperwork ASAP)  Starstruck Schools Matinee - Friday June 1 6 (open to any students who would like to go and be in the audience to support our perf o r me r s )  Music Art Festival - J u n e 20- 22

Thank you, Mrs Honey As Mrs Honey’s block of music teaching draws to a close, we wish to thank her very much for her contribution to the music department while Mr Gill has been absent. Mrs Honey’s quiet confidence a nd gentle, efficient approach to students and staff has been greatly appreciated.

F a c e b o o k We communicate through the private BHS Music page to all musicians/singers. If your child is a singer or musician and you have not yet `liked’ our page requesting t o join, please do so immediately so you do not miss out on important information every week.

STUDENT WELLBEING The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence , held on the third Friday of March each y e a r, is an opportunity for Australian schools to highlight their everyday work to counter bullying and violence.

This year the whole school participated in this day by taking a stand with a whole school presentation by Brett Murray from Make Bullying Histor y Foundation. Make Bullying History Foundation is committed to raising leaders within communities, schools and families to ensure that all people are treated with honour, dignity and respect.

After this powerful presentation, the students and staff had the opportunity to sign a banner showing their commitment to taking a stand to making bullying history within their school and community. This was a positive experience for the whole school and is now displayed with pride in the school library for a remin der and talking point to provide reflection in those times when we lose sight that “Bullying is Never OK!”

TRANSITION REPORT Cinema Readiness Program For the past 8 weeks we have been participating in the Cinema Work Readiness Program at Event Cinemas Kotara. Throughout the course we had many opportu nities to further develop our skills, such as team building, hospitality, a n d customer service as well as an insight into how the cinema w o r k s .

One activity involved selling a random item on the spot, which helped with thinking on the spot under pressure and convincing people to buy the object. We made coffees and had the opportunity t o e x p e r i e n c e the hospitality side of the cinema. The course was very well organised and thoroughly enjoyable.

Event Cinemas Kotara is 1 of 6 venues across Australia that ha s Atmos Sound which fully immerses the viewer with a 360 ° sound experience. During the course we were lucky enough to experiences the Atmos cinema, each time leaving fully amazed and smiling over the whole experience. We have thoroughly enjoyed the program and would definitely recommend the course to fellow students. It was an experience that left us all wanting to go again. The Cinema Crew

UON JOBS OF THE FUTURE EVENT On Thursday May 4, Year 11 Engineering Studies, Mathematics and Physics students were o ffered the opportunity to attend the University of Newcastle’s Jobs of the Future Information Day. We were given the chance to speak with UON students and professors to learn of the increasing impact of engineering in the workforce.

The day consisted of l ectures about Engineering, Architecture and Built Environments. We also heard from in dustry leading advocates on a Q& A p a n e l , before touring the labs and workshops.

My group was lucky enough to tour the Mechanical Engineering workshop and learn of the automotive designs of formula style racing vehicles. We engaged with the UON students and were able to learn of the various opportunities the University offers to engineering students throughout their studies.

SPORT REPORT Athletics Carnival Our Athletic s Carnival was held on Wednesday March 8 a t H u n t e r Region Sports Centre, Glendale. Beginning with our 1500m event, we had the most entrants I’ve ever seen in this event! Students were prepped and keen to gain as many house points as possible to ensure thei r house won!

Sports coaching students and teachers helped in the recording and running of the track and field events and our house patrons and captains dressed in their house colours! A pentathlon was run this year, organised by Mrs O’Brien which included long jump, 100m, shot put, javelin and 1500m. Anderson Magri and Sarah Noble were the winners of this newly introduced event!

The involvement from the 350 students that attended the carnival was matched with their positive attitudes! I’m so thankful to all the students and parents that attended the day and strongly anticipate that student attendance at carnivals will continue to improve. It’s the memories like these that will be cherished in our student’s minds!

Zone Athletics is to be held on Wednesday J u n e 7 , again at Hunter Region Sports Centre Glendale. There will be a bus departing to and from Belmont High. Departure from school is at 7.30am with a cost of $10 to be paid on the day (this includes entry). Building Harmony and Success PO Box 2345, Gateshead NSW 2290
