QuickSpecs HP CIFS Overview

The HP CIFS Product Suite

Hewlett-Packard's CIFS product suite provides a broad and flexible range of UNIX®-Windows® interoperability strategies for HP-UX: remote file sharing, printer access, and services. The Common Internet File System (CIFS) is the native networking protocol in ® Windows.

The HP CIFS product suite consists of the HP CIFS Server, the HP CIFS Client, and PAM-NTLM.

The CIFS Client allows HP-UX systems to mount CIFS file systems, including Windows, the HP CIFS Server, , and other CIFS servers, and access them locally, in a manner similar to NFS, but with greater security.

The HP CIFS Server provides access to its local filesystem to remote CIFS clients, including Windows, the HP CIFS Client, and others; Windows clients can also access the HP CIFS Server's printers.

The CIFS Client bundle also includes a Pluggable Authentication Module, PAM-NTLM, which allows HP-UX logins to be authenticated on a Windows domain.

The CIFS products include HP's industry-leading CIFS UNIX Extensions, which allow connections between CIFS Clients and Servers to utilize UNIX filesystem attributes within the CIFS protocol.

Availability HP CIFS product suite is available at no-charge. It is supported on HP-UX versions 11.00, 11iv1 and 11iv2; it is available with HP- UX 11i Application Releases and is included in the HP-UX 11i Foundation Operating Environment. The CIFS bundles are also available via download at HP Software Depot (http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot)

QuickSpecs HP CIFS Features and Benefits

HP CIFS Server: Features and Benefits Based on the open source software Samba (3.x) Full enterprise-level service and support from HP Integration with HP-UX Kerberos and Netscape Directory Server for HP-UX Can serve in multiple roles such as a Windows ADS Domain Member Server or as a Samba Domain Controller Support for CIFS UNIX Extensions Administration of HP-UX POSIX Access Control Lists (ACL) from Windows clients High Availability (HA) CIFS server solution when used with HP-UX ServiceGuard Web-based configuration and management using the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) Integrated with core HP-UX directory and file access control subsystems; thus, compatible with standard HP-UX file backup tools such as OmniBack and Legato. (All data and security information resides in the HP-UX file system.) NTLMv2 and SMB Signing support Winbind Support

HP CIFS Client: Features and Benefits High level of UNIX-Windows integration through NFS-style mounting of shared filesystems on CIFS servers, such as Windows, Samba (including HP's CIFS Server), and other vendors' implementations of CIFS servers. Industry standard protocols: TCP/IP, NetBIOS, CIFS, CIFS UNIX Extensions Easy out-of-the-box startup: no manual configuration required Flexibility: a rich set of tunable configuration options is provided CIFS security: users authenticated at each server accessed NTLM and NTLMv2 challenge-response : are not transmitted over network Kerberos authentication support; integration with system Kerberos credentials cache SMB Signing support Flexible name-resolution strategies: NetBIOS broadcast, WINS, DNS CIFS oplock support Large-file support (> 4GB) Support for internationalized clients: localization, Unicode

HP PAM-NTLM: Features and Benefits NTLM Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) allows HP-UX to use CIFS domain controllers to authenticate logins (such as telnet sessions) on the HP-UX system. This makes possible global user ID and authentication across both HP-UX and Windows, centralizing maintenance of HP-UX and Windows passwords. PAM-NTLM provides easily-definable mapping between different HP-UX and CIFS user accounts.
