4.10 Park Amenity comparisons

In order to further understand relationship between park scale and amenity provision a comparison of similar parks was undertaken. This highlighted a number of key variables including toilet provision, the number of cafes, and the total park area.

Building Development The design has undergone a series of key design developments, with the aim of refi ning the original strategies proposed at Stage 2:

• The Southern arm of the pavilion has extended along the lakeside to provide more expansive views over both the lake and oval, while additionally allowing the northern facade of the building to rotate and create a better relationship with both the gallery and the existing through route to the Oval from Gomm Road. This also helps to create a threshold between the different scales of the northern and southern halves of the park. • Principally the 3 service spaces are located with the 3 outer blocks, the offi ces are located to the south of the building, and the kitchen to the east, with the toilets in the North. This allows the kitchen area to accommodate the required catering demands, while ensuring the park offi ces have excellent aspect over both the oval and lake and that the toilets are easily accessible from both Gomm Rd and the Playground. The CGP Gallery • Recessed canopy’s are created on both the northern and southern facades to allow for an integrated and well engineered shelter that should provide ample rest-bite for casual park users.

6.6 Precedents

There are a number of successful cafes that address similar opportunities and constraints to the Southwark Park Pavilion. Many of these are also within London Parks such as the Caruso St John designed and the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in Hyde Park.

42 Southwark Park Pavilion Design and Access Statement August 2016 Given the proximity of the site to Dilston Grove, one of the earliest examples of in-situ concrete construction in the UK, implementation of concrete as the primary material for the pavilion is contextually sensitive while also helping to reinforce a heritage of concrete use within the park. This creates a potential relationship between the proposal and one of the oldest and most successful buildings within the park.

This common materiality would also provide relative freedom to create a sculpted building appropriate to the organic park geometries. While the durability of concrete is also highly suitable in terms of both maintenance and security concerns.
